  • MM Graduates Dominate With 7 Stakes Wins

    Monday, 18th December 2017
The build up to next month's $10 million Magic Millions race day gathered momentum on Saturday with seven Magic Millions graduates claiming stakes wins. Led by an exciting win in the Gr2 Villiers Stakes by Brisbane-based miler Crack Me Up, the performances of all stakes winners were timely with the majority being aimed at Queensland's richest raceday on 13 January. The $60,000 2015 Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase Crack Me Up will now head to the $1 Million Magic Millions Cup (1400m), while the Gr1 Doncaster Mile is an option in the autumn. Just over half an hour later at Randwick, quality Redoute's Choice mare Zestful scored a valuable stakes win when she edged out fellow Magic Millions graduate I Thought So in the listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m). The 6YO pushed her earnings past $400,000 when victorious for trainer Kris Lees. Earlier in the afternoon it was all about the 2YOs and the impressive performances of stable-mates Ef Troop and Outback Barbie. Ef Troop shot to outright favouritism for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) when he trounced the field in the listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1110m), while Outback Barbie made an auspicious start to her career with a debut win in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1110m). Both juveniles are by Eureka Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Spirit Of Boom. Other Doomben winners on the day were millionaire galloper Most Important who returned to his brilliant best in the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m), exciting 3YO Whypeeo who claimed his maiden stakes win in the Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m), and the speedy Robert Heathcote-trained Pinch River who continued his brilliant first-up form by winning the Listed Bribie Handicap (1050m).

At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Gr1-winning & 4-time Gr1-placed Vinery Stud stallion Mossman (Success Express-Lichen Lady, by Twig Moss) added a Group race success when 4YO New Zealand-bred gelding Crack Me Up (Mossman-Chuckle, by Danehill) landed the biggest prize of his career when unwinding his trademark late sprint to win the $250,000 Gr2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) for 3YO+, defeating Cabeza De Vaca & Interlocuter. A $60,000 purchase at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale from the draft of Glastonbury Farms, Crack Me Up improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr3 Sunshine Coast Guineas, Listed Recognition Stakes, Listed Tattersall's Mile & Listed Dalrello Stakes) and 5 placings (Listed BRC Wayne Wilson Plate) from 20 starts for $511,250 in earnings. "I got beaten in this race by a short margin some years ago with Rags To Riches so this helps make up for that," trainer Liam Birchley told Sky Racing. "The Doncaster is definitely something to look at now he is guaranteed a start. But we'll get to the Magic Millions first." The $1 million Magic Millions Cup (1400m) will be run at the Gold Coast on 13 January. From Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner-up Chuckle (Danehill), the cleverly-named Crack Me Up hails from the extended family of dual Gr1-winning sire Turffontein, VRC Derby winner Hit The Roof, Gr1 Railway Handicap winner Alynda, and Gr3 winning sire Fast 'N' Famous.

Irish Bet will follow a proven path to the Golden Slipper following his debut win in the $500,000 Inglis Nursery at Royal Randwick on Saturday. A $55,000 buy for Mick Flanagan of the China Horse Club from this year's Australian Easter Yearling Sale out of the Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft, Irish Bet powered away for a dominant win in the race that has been used as a launching pad to Golden Slipper glory by top fillies She Will Reign and Mossfun. "He showed us a lot of ability from day one but two-year-old's off one trial you never know until you see them in action," said China Horse Club's International Racing and Breeding Manager Michael Wallace. "He was a lovely horse, was always going to be a good 2YO type, he just had everything we look for in a 2YO." Irish Bet (Smart Missile x Dublin Me Bet) will now be given a short break before being aimed at the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on 24 March.

At Ellerslie in New Zealand, Rich Hill Stud's Melbourne Cup winning stallion Shocking (Street Cry-Maria di Castiglia, by Danehill) added a black-type success when 3YO New Zealand-bred gelding Formidable (Shocking-Princess Biscotte, by Casino Prince) overcame trouble in running to post his maiden stakes win in the $50,000 Listed 3YO Salver (2100m) for 3YOs, defeating The Boy Wonder & Secret Ambition. Purchased for $39,000 at the 2016 NZ Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale, Formidable improved his record to 2 wins and 2 placings from 6 starts for NZ$44,600 in earnings. Trainer Shaune Ritchie said Formidable's longer term target was the New Zealand Derby in March, but he refused to rule out a tilt at the Karaka Classic. “That’s what you like to see when you are pressing forward to the big dance in March. He’s now got his ticket I guess on that win," he told NZ Racing Desk. "He will go to the paddock for ten days now then we will find a mile for him before tackling the Avondale Guineas." Ritchie added: "He does hold a nomination for the Karaka Mile, so we could pop the blinkers on him and sharpen him up for that. It might be a little short for him but it’s a million-dollar race, so you have to have a go don’t you.” The $1 million Karaka 3YO Classic (1600m) will be run at Ellerslie on 27 January followed by the Gr2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) on 17 February.
