  • NEW Warren’s Benedetta Primed for Sangster Stakes

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Classy mare Benedetta took the first step towards the Gr1 Sangster Stakes with her brilliant win in the $150,000 Gr3 Sportsbet R N Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on the weekend, reports racingsa.com.au. Trainer Jason Warren’s decision to base his team in Adelaide for three weeks and target the Adelaide Racing Carnival appears to have been an astute move. Benedetta (Hellbent-Whatalovelyday, by Domesday) produced a brilliant finish to defeat Climbing Star in the feature; the win the second leg of a riding double for Daniel Stackhouse. “She’s obviously a terrific, honest mare. She’s been here 10 days now, we gave her the time to settle in,’’ Warren said. He added, “She’ll have a nice two weeks to prepare for the Sangster and hopefully she continues to improve.’’ The 4YO mare, has accrued career earnings totalling $1,104,725. Her standout victory came in the $200,000 4YO M Open Set Weight With Penalties on September 2 last year, where she was guided to success by jockey Daniel Stackhouse. The ultra consistent daughter of Yarraman Park Stud’s popular Group1-winning son of I Am Invincible has 10 in the frame finishes from 13 starts, with the other three outings producing fourth placings in the $1m Silver Aeagle, Gr1 Oakleigh Plate and Gr1 Newmarket Handicap.

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
With countless highlights throughout its 100-lot catalogue, the 2024 NZB National Online Yearling Sale gives buyers access to a quality selection of yearlings that would not have been out of place in the Book 1 or Book 2 sessions at Karaka earlier in the year. There are 16 siblings to black-type performers, along with half a dozen progeny of stakes-performed mares. Top-class families feature prominently throughout many of the catalogue’s pedigree pages. Below is just a small selection of some of the highlight lots that will be available for purchase in the National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus:
    • Poplar Lodge presents Lot 37, a filly by Shocking out of Musigny (Reset). Herself a winner as a two-year-old and runner-up in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1400m) at Moonee Valley, Musigny is the dam of five winners including the Group placegetters Jimmy Lincoln (Jimmy Choux) and Amor Fati (Showcasing).
    • Rich Hill Stud’s Lot 16 is a filly by emerging sire Ace High out of Kiara (Pentire). Herself unraced, Kiara is a full-sister to 10-time Group 1 winner (King) Mufhasa (Pentire). Group 1 winners (The) Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) and Kovalica (Ocean Park) are also close relatives, along with big-race performers Sacred Satono (Satono Aladdin) and Cheval d’Or (Almanzor).
    • Lot 50 is a colt by Cambridge Stud’s exciting newcomer Hello Youmzain out of the winning mare Runway Queen (Star Witness). • Lot 36 is by superb Australian stallion Written Tycoon, who is the leading sire of two-year-olds in both Australia and New Zealand in 2023-24. His outstanding juvenile daughters this season include Golden Slipper (1200m) heroine Lady Of Camelot, along with New Zealand’s $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) and Group 1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) winner Velocious.
  • NEW O’Sullivan Non-Plussed by Two Race Scenario

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
The traditional weekly summation, in review, of the weekend’s Black Type fare by the Ratings Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan on racing.com is obligatory reading. Invariably concise and insightful, this week’s edition has produced a first for the expert, a scenario where even he is at a loss-for-words to try interpreting the discombobulated outcome of the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The facts show that it wasn’t so much a case of Pride of Jenni (Pride of Dubai) streaking away than a situation where none of the non-chasing pack wanted to blink first for fear of getting sucked into her catch-me-if-you-can tactics that have, since late last year, become an increasingly effective defensive tool. Ergo, it’s better to run a place, than take her on and finish downfield. Except, that the figures show the Ciaron Maher-trained daughter of Pride of Dubai went only a tad faster than when getting caught by Cascadian in the Australian Cup, i.e. the index fund-like chasers withdrew into their collective shells and bobbed along in a race of their own. Although shining a light on the performances of Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock), Mr Brightside (Bullbars) and Cascadian (New Approach) who finished strongly despite the pedestrian pace, O’Sullivan remarked, “It presents a unique scenario in which to rate performances and view the form going forward.” Whilst the racing world was rightly gob-smacked by the widely viewed vision of her leading by up to 50-lengths at one point, the damned-if-we-do and damned-if-we-don’t dilemma for Pride of Jenni’s rival connections remains. Moving forward, it will be interesting to see the attrition rate of acceptances once noms are released for any weight-for-age race that includes her name amongst the nominees.

  • NEW Blue Point 2YO Gr1 Winner Straight to Guineas

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Trainer Richard Hannon’s Group 1 victor Rosallion (Blue Point-Rosaline, by New Approach) is set to bypass any preparatory races and head directly for the UK’s Gr1 Qipco 2000 Guineas. Hannon, along with owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, deliberated over whether to incorporate a trial run before the Newmarket Classic. However, opting to steer clear of challenging conditions on soft ground, the decision was made to present Rosallion fresh for the main event. According to timeform.com, In a statement on his website, richardhannonracing.co.uk, Hannon remarked, “Given the substantial rainfall in recent months, we've concluded that Rosallion will forgo a preparatory outing and instead proceed directly to the 2000 Guineas in May.” He further explained, “This decision wasn't taken lightly, but considering the current ground conditions, subjecting Rosallion to a race now would be overly taxing with insufficient recovery time in just a fortnight.” Highlighting Rosallion's excellent condition and recent impressive performances during training, Hannon expressed confidence in the colt's readiness for Newmarket. “Rosallion has been thriving at home, and following two promising sessions away from the yard, we believe he's primed to seize his opportunity at Newmarket,” he affirmed. Winner of France’s Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (1400m) for 2YOs at Longchamp, Rosallion is a member of Darley’s brilliant first northern hemisphere juvenile crop.
  • NEW First Leg of Japanese Triple Crown to Justin Milano

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
The Gr1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese Two Thousand Guineas) was won by in Japan by Justin Milano (Kizuna-Margot Did, by Exceed and Excel) on Sunday ridden by jockey Keita Tosaki, reports bloodhorse.com. "He's a big-striding horse, and we'll have to see how he does on the small oval track in a race with many runners. The ground might not be in the best condition on the last weekend of racing as well," trainer Yasuo Tomomichi said. "But he's quite easy to control, which I think works in his favor. I think he can handle any kind of race. With the talent he has, I think he has a chance, and I'm hoping for a good run as we look ahead to the Derby with him." Justin Milano is out of Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes winner Margot Did, who has also left Gr1 Belmont Oaks winner Magic Attitude (Galileo) and Gr2 winner Mission Impassable (Galileo). Justin Milano is unbeaten in three starts. In second was Group 2 winner Cosmo Kuranda (Al Ain-Southern Speed, by Southern Image) whose dam won the Gr1 Caulfield Cup.

  • NEW Mahoney Secures Spectacular Double in NARS

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Flying the flag proudly for Western Australia in the National Apprentice Race Series (NARS), Rosie Mahony booted home a double to secure valuable points for her home state, reports rwwa.com.au. The 24-year-old Albany-based apprentice guided $9 chance Bart’s Bullet (Bullet Train) to victory before scoring a popular punters’ win aboard hot favourite Spaceship (Invader). Mahony’s first Darwin Turf Club experience held no fears after riding on dirt tracks across Western Australia including Broome, Carnarvon and Port Hedland. “It was an unbelievable experience… I went and rode work in the morning, it was nice to get a feel of the track before the races. It all worked out really well,” Mahony told Tabradio. Mahony also had the support and sage advice of WA jockey coach, Peter Hall to draw on. She revealed, “He got teary on me. He was so proud and happy when we go well. It’s the best feeling in the world having people around who give you so much support.” Mahony’s Darwin double takes WA to 25 points and fourth position on the NARS leaderboard. South Australia holds top billing ahead of the Northern Territory and Tasmania. Victoria Corver will represent WA in the final leg at Doomben on Wednesday.
  • Orchestral Now Home in NZ for A Spell

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Co-trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood will map out a spring campaign for dual Group 1 winner Orchestral (Savabeel-Symphonic, by O'Reilly), according to racingnews.co.nz. "She's really well. She got back from Australia late last night (Sunday), and seems to have pulled up nicely," Wellwood said. "Nearing the end of her preparation, she just had to go to a number of grand finals, and it was hard to peak again last Saturday. She's off to the paddock now, we haven't made any firm plans for the spring but we're very excited for her next season." Orchestral has won six of her ten starts and over $ 2million, with wins in the Gr1 NZ Derby and Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes. "The Karaka Millions was right up there, to see her put a nice field away over a mile is when we knew we really had something special. For her to then back that up in the Guineas, the Derby and the Vinery was great!" Orchestral is a daughter of legendary Waikato Stud stallion Savabeel who looks all but certain to reclaim his New Zealand throne from last year's winner Proisir.

  • Avdulla Living the Dream in Hong Kong

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Hailing from Melbourne but firmly rooted in the bustling streets of Hong Kong, jockey Brenton Avdulla's journey to success has been nothing short of remarkable, reports racing.com. Over the past month, Avdulla has showcased his exceptional talent, securing his 14th and 15th career Group 1 victories aboard Tony Cruz's formidable California Spangle. His latest triumph in the Gr2 Chairman's Trophy at Sha Tin, where Beauty Joy showcased an electrifying turn of speed, marked a significant milestone for both jockey and trainer Tony Cruz, with the latter reaching his 1500th winner. The feat adds to his impressive tally of 26 wins since being granted his Hong Kong license at the onset of the 2023/24 season. “Obviously when you first come here you don't get much of a chance, it's hard…you can see why lots of people go home straight away, but I wanted to give it a go and I'm glad I stuck through. I couldn't imagine anything else, I love my life here," said Avdulla. It is a testament to the enduring partnership that began modestly, with Avdulla gradually carving his place in the competitive landscape of Hong Kong racing where he started as a ripple but is now making waves. With unwavering determination and unparalleled talent, Avdulla proves that no matter where the journey begins, home is where the heart finds its true calling.
  • Arrowfield Closes off The Championships in Style

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Autumn Angel’s emphatic victory in Saturday’s $1 million Gr1 ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) G1 is a major milestone for her sire The Autumn Sun, the best racing colt by the great Redoute’s Choice and now a Group 1 sire. Her performance, backing up from her courageous Gr3 Adrian Knox S. a week prior, was franked by the quality of her opposition: she defeated the Gr1 VRC Oaks winner Zardozi, the race favourite and Gr1 New Zealand Derby & Gr1 Storm Queen S. winner Orchestral, Gr1 Levin Classic winner Quintessa, and valiant Storm Queen runner-up Tutta La Vita and VRC third Basilinna. It has been a heady Championships week for Arrowfield which celebrated two other graduate successes at Randwick: the previous Saturday’s stunning Gr1 Doncaster Mile winner Celestial Legend (Dundeel-Sarraqa), and the final winner of last Saturday’s meeting, Gr2 Sapphire S. winner Wee Nessy (Snitzel-Later Gator). The 7th Group 1 winner bred by the partnership of Arrowfield & Japan’s famed Northern Farm, Autumn Angel is out of the very good racemare Angel Of Mercy (by Hussonet), who won three Listed races and the Gr3 BRC Lord Mayor’s Cup, and was a close 2nd in the Gr1 Tattersall’s Tiara at her final start. The combination of Redoute’s Choice’s sons with Hussonet’s daughters has now produced 10 stakeswinners from 106 runners, including dual Group 1 winner and brilliant sire Extreme Choice. Autumn Angel has two younger full sisters and one of them, 2YO Stolen Summer, was passed in at last year’s Inglis Easter Sale and will race from the Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich stable. Angel Of Mercy produced a Maurice colt in 2023 and is in foal to triple Classic winner Hitotsu. It’s notable that three of The Autumn Sun’s first four stakes-winners have won at Group level, while the fourth, Listed winner Coco Sun continues to develop: she scored by 3-lengths over 1600m at Bendigo’s Metro meeting on Saturday.

  • Goffs Targeting Wealthy Young Investors

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
"Come to Kensington Gardens on the Monday, buy a racehorse and by the Tuesday you will be in the parade ring at one of the world's most famous racecourses [Royal Ascot] alongside members of the British royal family and other royal families, with your own racehorse in your colours," said chief executive of the thoroughbred racehorse auctioneers Goffs, Henry Beeby, at a private event in Mayfair, reports theguardian.com. Goffs have seen the average age of buyers reduce as the young and wealthy want to buy into something they can share on social media. "They [younger people] are looking for a unique experience they can share on social media. They can share the experience from the race day, and the horse will have its own private cheerleading squad," said Hayley O'Connor, Goffs' head of international client relations. And the rise of syndicates is making it easier to buy a portion of a horse to get the full experience without the full outlay. "There's nothing quite like the thrill of ownership," Beeby said. "There's nothing like seeing your horse and your jockey in your colours on the track, and – my word – if it happens to win you can share that joy with your friends."
  • Little Brose to Take the Road Less Travelled

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Australian Hong Kong-based trainer David Hayes is poised to embark on an audacious venture as he introduces Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) victor Little Brose to the Hong Kong racing scene, reports scmp.com. A graduate of Sledmere Stud, Little Brose will face a formidable challenge in his debut on Hong Kong soil as he will be pitched into the Gr1 Chairman's Sprint Prize (,200m) on Champions Day later this month, squaring off against seasoned competitors such as multiple Group 1 performer California Spangle, Victor The Winner, and Japan's Mad Cool. Under the tutelage of Hayes' sons JD, Ben, and Will in Australia, the Per Incanto colt was one of the leading 2YOs of his generation and is a stallion in waiting. Since arriving in Hong Kong last December with a rating of 77, Little Brose has diligently prepared for his much-anticipated debut, undergoing four trials to fine-tune his form. Hayes acknowledges the enormity of the task ahead, describing the move as a "throw at the stumps" and highlighting the unconventional scenario Little Brose faces. Despite the daunting competition, Hayes remains optimistic, acknowledging the strategic advantage of Hong Kong Jockey Club's handicap system, which offers young Group horses like Little Brose an opportunity to compete on fair terms. Hayes hoipes to glean further insight into Little Brose's readiness during a trial at Happy Valley on Friday, contemplating the use of blinkers based on his performance.

  • Opportunity for McNab to Make Mark in Australia

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Dual New Zealand Premiership-winning jockey, Michael McNab, is poised to make his mark in Victoria as he gears up for his debut ride in Australia on the up-and-coming stayer, Nereus, in the prestigious Mornington Cup. According to racing.com, with top-tier jockeys occupied in Sydney and Perth's premier events this Saturday, McNab's inclusion in the lineup presents a prime opportunity to add another first, noted co-trainer of Nerus, Shaune Ritchie. McNab's stellar track record speaks volumes, boasting consecutive New Zealand jockeys' premierships in 2021-22 and 2022-23, and currently ranking second this season, having clinched nearly 300 victories over the past three years. Nereus, owned by Waikato Stud and sired by Savabeel, has secured five wins in eight starts, demonstrating formidable potential. Ritchie remains optimistic about Nereus's performance, aiming to offset the disappointment of Mahrajaan's recent showing in the Sydney Cup. Unlike traditional New Zealand stayers, Nereus possesses agility and a sharp turn of speed, characteristics that could prove advantageous over the extended 2400 meters at Mornington. With aspirations for a spot in the coveted Caulfield Cup, Ritchie emphasised the importance of this strategic move. Despite Nereus's aversion to wet tracks, Ritchie views the Mornington Cup as a fitting challenge. McNab's familiarity with the horse's temperament further bolsters their confidence in the Australian raid.
  • Second Edition of Unique Western Trilogy

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
Racing WA will host the second edition of the world's only tri-code slot race series next weekend – the TABtouch Western Trilogy – reports rwwa.com.au. WA’s richest three days of racing will be held from April 18 to April 20 when The Sandgroper, The Nullarbor and The Quokka are all run and won. Last year’s inaugural Western Trilogy generated almost $6 million for the WA economy, with nearly 8,000 racegoers attending the three slot races. “As the world’s only tri-code race series, the Western Trilogy is bold and innovative and truly showcases the world-class racing across the three codes here in Western Australia,” Racing and Wagering Western Australia's CEO Ian Edwards said. The Sandgroper, WA’s richest greyhound race worth $600,000 in prizemoney, will be held at Cannington on Thursday, April 18. The $1.25 million Nullarbor is Australia’s richest Group 1 harness race and will take place at Gloucester Park on Friday, April 19. Bjorn Baker's Quokka winner Overpass (Vancouver) is returning to WA to defend his crown, representing the RAM Racing Syndicate. However, he has a class field to contend with, featuring stars including last year’s runner up, Amelia’s Jewel, and progressive 3YO's Oscar’s Fortune and Ripcord.

  • Experienced Online Bookies Combine Forces

    Tuesday, 16th April 2024
BlueBet and betr, two prominent online bookmakers, will merge to establish a competitive wagering provider capable of rivaling industry giants such as Sportsbet, Ladbrokes, and Tabcorp. According to a report by racing.com, the merger, announced to the Australian Stock Exchange late last week, signifies a significant move in the wagering sector – particularly as many operators face declining revenues. The consolidation unites wagering veterans Michael Sullivan and Matt Tripp, each renowned for his leadership in Australia's online betting landscape over the past twenty years. Sullivan, BlueBet's Executive Director, pointed to the transformative potential of the merger, highlighting the combination of BlueBet's advanced technology and betr's substantial customer base, boasting 341,000 open accounts and 112,000 active users, compared to BlueBet's 67,000 active customers. Tripp, betr's founder and a key figure in the launches of Sportsbet, CrownBet, and BetEasy, views the merger as a pivotal step in betr's evolution. Notably, betr gained prominence with high-profile promotions in 2022, offering enticing odds to customers on events like the Melbourne Cup and AFL/NRL premiership markets. As part of the merger, Tripp will assume the role of Executive Director of the merged entity starting January 2025. He expressed enthusiasm for the joint venture's potential, citing the combined scale and technological prowess of BlueBet and betr as formidable assets for future growth. Tripp underscored the significance of the merged team's expertise and complementary skills in driving the company toward its goal of becoming a Tier 1 wagering operator.
