Kastoria Wins Irish Gr1 St Leger
Owner-breeder the Aga Khan's 4YO mare Kastoria (Selkirk-Kassana, by Shernazar) caused a boilover by defeating hot favourite (& top-weighted Melbourne Cup entry) Yeats in the €300,000 (A$480,000) Gr1 Irish St Leger (14 furlongs) at The Curragh. Kastoria (ridden by Mick Kinane for trainer John Oxx) scored by a half-length from 5YO entire Yeats (Sadler's Wells-Lyndonville, by Top Ville) with a massive 10-lengths back to 3rd-placed 10-year-old gelding The Whistling Teal (Rudimentary-Lonely Shore, by Blakeney). Kastoria is undefeated in Ireland this season, having won the Vintage Crop Stakes on April 30, Gr3 Curragh Cup on July 1 & Ballyroan Stakes on August 20; overall she now has 6 wins from 11 career starts. Meanwhile Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O'Brien said plans for Yeats (who raced to the lead 5 furlongs from home) to contest the Melbourne Cup were still undecided & told racingpost.co.uk: "You can take nothing away from the winner. She did it very well. It is possible that Yeats was at his peak for Royal Ascot (he won the UK Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup by 4-lengths over 2.5 miles on June 22) & Goodwood (also winning the UK Gr2 Goodwood Cup by 5-lengths over 2 miles on August 3) & it could be he needs a rest. But we will wait & see how he comes out of the race before deciding on the Melbourne Cup. The zoom he showed in his previous races this season was missing today".

Kentucky Yearlings Day-4: US$1.3m Pulpit Colt
In the US, Stonestreet Stables principal Jess Jackson (sitting with bloodstock advisor John Moynihan) "won a prolonged bidding war" with Darley agent Dan Pride (representing Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum) & paid the Day-4 top price of US$1.3 million for a Pulpit colt (out of winning Storm Cat mare Razzi Cat) at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Kentucky, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. The colt (consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency) is a half-brother to Argentine Gr1 winners Rocking Trick & Randy Cat. Jackson commented: "He's a Pulpit & he's got great blood on both sides. If he runs, he's something special. We're looking for the long-term residual on him & he has the blood to make a good sire someday. That's our hope & this game is about hopes." Jackson (outbid on several occasions in the opening days of the sale) said he was willing to go to US$1.5 million & added: "For once America won! I'm pleased we prevailed. Darley was very persistent. Once in a while we have to win, right? There was an attrition there that was working. They took most of my good horses on Day-1 & Day-2, so I salute them for having good advisors. John (Moynihan) feels this one is a true winner." Taylor Made's Mark Taylor summed up: "The Pulpit colt is the same cross as Sky Mesa: a half to Gr1 winners that were legitimate horses in Argentina & he's just an unbelievable physical. He was the kind that all the top people liked. The only group we didn't have bidding on him was Coolmore."

B&R Directory Merger A Win-Win For Industry
Following the popularity of both the 2006 Breeding&Racing Thoroughbred Industry Directory & the 2006 Breeding&Racing Website Guide, we've decided to combine both into a bumper 2007 edition published in October this year. This creates a win-win situation for the thoroughbred industry because, in addition to the new-look half-page format in magazine hard copy, all half-page page display advertisements (discounted to just $690) will also appear live on our Daily News home page. And each entire half-page display advertisement will be a live portal direct to The Advertiser's website: an absolute necessity as the internet becomes increasingly crucial as a business driver. There is no extra charge for this win-win facility, so Don't Miss The Boat! Call either Ric Chapman or Gary Knowles now on 02-9281 7523 to take advantage of this offer.
