Septimus Rated Top Stayer in Europe
Early Melbourne Cup punters take note: The latest International Classifications place Ireland's Aidan O'Brien-trained 5YO entire Septimus (Sadler's Wells-Caladira, by Darshaan) as the top-rated stayer in Europe (on 122), ahead of multiple Gr1-winning Ballydoyle stable-mates Yeats (121) & Scorpion (120). Immediately after another O'Brien stayer Mahler finished 3rd in last November's Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) O'Brien told racingpost.co.uk that while Mahler ran "a very brave race", the stable now intends to target the 2008 Melbourne Cup with Septimus, confirming: "Septimus is a very good stayer. He'll probably come down here with top-weight, but he would be a possibility if he was in good shape next year." During 2007 Septimus blitzed his rivals by 5-lengths (& earned the highest Racing Post Rating registered by any stayer last season at 125) when he set a new track record in September's UK Gr2 Doncaster Cup (18 furlongs). At his previous start Septimus also won August's UK Gr2 Lonsdale Stakes (in his 1st test over 2 miles) at York & earlier in the year finished runner-up in June's UK Gr1 Coronation Cup (12 furlongs) at Epsom Downs, following victory in the Gr3 Mooresbridge Stakes. In 2006 Septimus won the Gr2 Dante Stakes at York & in 2005 he won Ireland's Gr2 Beresford Stakes & finished 3rd in the UK Gr1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. (Jan 17)

Winners In 3 States For Falvelon
On the track in Australia yesterday, Glenlogan Park Stud sire Falvelon (Alannon-Devil's Zephyr, by Zephyr Zing) notched winners in 3 states with victories by Spring Drinks (Sandown in Melbourne) in Victoria, Ice Tee (Wyong) in NSW & Falvalady (Doomben in Brisbane) in Queensland.
  • 3YO Filly Spring Drinks (Falvelon-Come Spring) scored over 1400m at Sandown for trainer Lee Freedman to take her record to 2 wins & a placing from 11 starts; she was a $45,000 yearling at the 2006 Inglis Classic Sale in Sydney.
  • 3YO gelding Ice Tee (Falvelon-Hula Song) scored on debut over 1000mn at Wyong for trainer Gerald Ryan; he was an $80,000 yearling at the 2006 Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne.
  • 3YO filly Falvalady (Falvelon-Macy, by Fairy King) scored over 1350m at Doomben for trainer Kelly Doughty; she was a $26,000 yearling at the 2006 Magic Millions Premier Sale on the Gold Coast.

1st City Win Since Ingham Split For Hawkes
Meanwhile former champion Sydney trainer John Hawkes recorded his 1st metropolitan winner since his split from the Ingham family stable when 3YO filly Erupts (Delago Brom-Versuvia) scored over 1200m at Sandown yesterday. Hawkes now has 16 horses in work in Melbourne & 25 at Rosehill in Sydney. (Jan 17)

Horses Begin Leaving Qld Quarantine
Queensland Racing confirmed yesterday that "horses have commenced leaving quarantine for both intra & interstate destinations". (Jan 17)

Qld Racing Says BTC Directors Misled Members
Meanwhile the Board of Queensland Racing announced that "after considering the due diligence reports on the Brisbane Turf Club & Queensland Turf Club" it is "firmly of the view there are no issues that would have prevented a merger proceeding". QRL chairman Bob Bentley declared the controversial BTC directors' representations to members "that there are hidden problems in the affairs of the QTC are false & misleading". Bently added: "The QTC would have brought a significantly greater asset base to the merger than the BTC, thus the merger was of greater benefit to BTC members. The due diligence conducted by QR did not reveal the QTC was in possession of a secret development plan that was not costed & based on the sale of Doomben. The assertion by BTC chairperson Mary Collier that this secret plan existed is a misrepresentation to members." Bentley summed up: "QR believes the merger should have proceeded in the best interests of the industry & the conduct of the anti-merger directors has squandered the immediate future of Brisbane racing. Collier & her anti-merger directors will in the future find it extremely difficult to justify their actions." (Jan 17)

Swettenham Mare Nina Haraka Dies In Accident
Swettenham Stud reported the death of former top race mare & successful broodmare Nina Haraka (Fraar-La Nebbia, by Zephyr Bay) after breaking a leg in a paddock accident. She was in-foal to Arrowfield Stud stallion & current champion Australian sire Flying Spur. Nina Haraka (dam of Gr1-placed filly Extension Of Time) was 4-times Gr1-placed on the track (including runner-up in the 1999 Gr1 Vic Health Cup) as well as winning the Gr3 Adelaide Guineas & earning in excess of $400,000. (Jan 17)

NZ Sprinter Needuask Moves To Singapore
Top New Zealand sprinting 4YO gelding Needuask (Howbaddouwantit-Sky Mist, by Sky Chase) will not start in Saturday's Gr1 Telegraph Handicap at Trentham, but instead is set to join the Singapore stable of expatriate Kiwi trainer Laurie Laxon. Needuask's co-trainer Richard Yuill told nzracingnews.co.nz: "He's booked to fly out on January 23 (next Wednesday). Apparently there are a couple of major sprints for him over there." Needuask has won 3 of his last 5 starts, including both December's Gr2 Concorde Handicap over (1200m) at Avondale & Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie, before finishing runner-up on January 1 in the Gr1 Railway Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie. Overall Needusak (a NZ$34,000 yearling at the 2005 NZ Bloodstock Select Sale) has 6 wins & 10 placings from 19 starts. (Jan 17)

Aust-Bred Royal Delight Euthanased After HK Break-Down
In Hong Kong, Australian-bred 5YO gelding Royal Delight (Commands-Conquered, by Star Watch) who finished 3rd behind boom fellow Australia-bred sprinter Sacred Kingdom in December's Gr1 HK International Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin, broke down in trackwork at Sha Tin & was later euthanased. Royal Delight was preparing for the Gr1 Centenary Sprint Cup on January 27 & trainer Caspar Fownes told the South China Morning Post: "Unfortunately the leg was broken in 3 places; there was nothing we could do for him. It is a real tragedy, very upsetting & hard to understand because his legs had shown no sign of problems, his knees & joints were perfect." Royal Delight (a $135,000 yearling at the 2004 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale) was an unbeaten stakes-winner in 3 starts in Australia (including the Listed Sir Brian Crowley Stakes at Randwick) racing for Rick Worthington as War Of The Worlds; he subsequently won on debut in HK in April 2006 & later also won September 2006's Challenge Cup (down the straight 1000m) & October 2007's Gr3 Premier Bowl (1200m) setting a track record (1min 7.6sec). 1st Foal For Darley Sire Librettist
In Ireland, the 1st foal by dual Gr1-winning Darley sire Librettist (Danzig-Mysterial, by Alleged) was born at Kildangan Stud: a colt out of Rabbah Bloodstock's 7YO Kris mare Tropical Breeze (a half-sister to Rainbow Mirage, who was stakes-placed as a juvenile last year & is also from the family of Gr1 Caulfield Cup winner Taufan's Melody & multiple stakes-winner Free To Speak). Librettist (whose 7 wins from 10 starts included the French Gr1 Prix Jacques le Marois & Gr1 Prix du Moulin) is standing the 2008 season at Newmarket's Dalham Hall in England for £10,000 (A$24,000); during his 1st season at stud in Ireland, he covered a book that included 31 black type-performing mares & 27 producers of stakes-winners, including Cal Norma's Lady (dam of Bertolini's Gr1 Cheveley Park Stud Stakes winner Donna Blini), Moyesii (dam of Gr1-winner Kirklees), Janaat (dam of Lend A Hand) & Sweet Revival (dam of US Gr1-winner Sweet Return). (Jan 17)

1st Foal For Darley Sire Iffraaj
Also in Ireland, the 1st foal by fellow Darley sire & NZ Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic-Pastorale, by Nureyev) was born at Parkway Farm in County Cork: a colt out of breeder Denis McDonnell's Alzao mare Acidanthera. The colt is a half-brother to 2 winners & is from the family of Darley Japan stallion & Gr1 St Leger winner Rule Of Law. Iffraaj is standing the 2008 season for €12,000 (A$19,000) at Kildangan Stud; his dam is a half-sister to fellow Kildangan resident Cape Cross & from the immediate family of Diktat, Desirable, Shadayid & Russian Rhythm. Overall Iffraaj notched 7 wins from 13 starts (also including the 2005 UK Gr2 Park Stakes at Doncaster) & retired with a Timeform rating of 127 & International Classification of 128 (ranking him the best horse in Europe at distances under 8 furlongs). (Jan 17)

Lynam Interview 1: Acclamation & Invincible Spirit Boost
The UK Racing Post asked leading bloodstock economist & consultant John Lynam: "What was the best thing that happened in the bloodstock industry in 2007?" He replied: "The emergence of successful stallions for stallion farms other than the big 2 players: for example Acclamation (Rathbarry) & Invincible Spirit (Irish National Stud). Breeders need options & it would be catastrophic for the industry if the number of stallion farms continues to get smaller & smaller." (Jan 17)

Lynam Interview 2: Over-Production Warning
And Racing Post also asked John Lynam: "What was the worst thing that happened in the bloodstock industry in 2007?" He replied: "A toss-up between (a) the over-production problem as evidenced by the breeding stock sales & (b) the race-fixing trial debacle (Kieren Fallon group)." (Jan 17)

Lynam Interview 3: Yearling Market Depends On Coolmore
The Racing Post also asked John Lynam: "What do you foresee for the yearling sales market in 2008?" He answered: "At the middle to upper-end of the market, it will depend on the spending of Demi O'Byrne, John Ferguson & Shadwell Estates. For example, will O'Byrne spend like last year or revert to his 2006 level? At the bottom end of the market, there will only be a market for the really nice horse. The market gave a clear message last year: we don't want rubbish." (Jan 17)

Lynam Interview 4: Haafhd & Bachelor Duke 1st-Crop Tips
When Racing Post asked John Lynam to "name your top 3 1st-season sire picks" he replied: "1 Haafhd; 2 Bachelor Duke; 3 Exceed And Excel." (Jan 17)

Heron Bloodstock Founder John Corbett Dies Aged 69
Renowned UK bloodstock agent John Corbett died "after a short illness" aged 69, reported racingpost.co.uk. Corbett was "one of the founders of the influential Heron Bloodstock agency & could also boast about having been the man to foal Northern Dancer during a brief stint working at Windfields Farm". Corbett set up Heron Bloodstock in partnership with Stan Dunckley in London in the late 1960s & Captain Tim Bulwer-Long & George Harris joined The Agency in 1970 (& Harris opened a New York office in 1973). Credited as being "the 1st to provide competition to the then-dominant British Bloodstock Agency, Heron Bloodstock was also one of the earliest to succeed in encouraging Japanese buyers into the European & American markets". (Jan 17)

Ekraar 2nd On Italian 1st-Crop Table
In Italy, NZ Stoney Bridge Stud's Gr1-winning Shadwell shuttle sire Ekraar (Red Ransom-Sacahuista, by Raja Baba) has finished in 2nd on the Leading 1st-Crop Sire List for 2007. Ekraar also finished 2nd by number of individual winners among the 1st-season sires (with 11 from just 20 runners). He finished on both lists behind former champion Italian 2YO Blue Air Force (by Sri Pekan). Ekraar (who missed the 2007 Southern Hemisphere breeding season after being detained in quarantine at Sydney's Eastern Creek) has 8 yearlings catalogued for the upcoming NZ Bloodstock Karaka sales series (including a half-sister to multiple Group winner Millennium). Ekraar is due to return to Stoney Bridge for the 2008 breeding season. (Jan 17)

Spanish Guineas Winner Retired To Stud
In Spain, 2005 Premio Valderas (Spanish 1000 Guineas) winner Nurenieva (Enrique-Icicle,by Alzao) has been retired to stud. The 9-time winner "is slated to be covered by Gr1-winning stallion Turtle Bowl's 14-year-old sire Dyhim Diamond (Night Shift-Happy Landing, by Homing)" reported thoroughbredinternet.com. (Jan 17)

2007 US Purses Up & Handle Steady
In the US, "despite a decline in race days in 2007, overall purses increased 5.5% & handle remained steady compared to 2006 figures, according to statistics released by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association" reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Total US purses increased from US$1.12 billion in 2006 to US$1.18 billion in 2007 "thanks in part to the opening of Presque Isle Downs, the Pennsylvania racino that offered lucrative average daily purses of US$430,259". The purse increase occurred "despite a slight drop in handle as patrons wagered US$14.73 billion on US races in 2007, down 0.37% compared to 2006. Race days were down 0.82% to 6,168. (Jan 17)

Santa Anita Adding Binder To Cushion Track
In California "after considering switching back to a conventional dirt track, Santa Anita Park officials have decided to add polymer & fiber to the existing Cushion Track surface in the hope of overcoming extreme drainage issues that forced the cancellation of 3 live racing dates last week," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Paul Harper, technical director for manufacturer Cushion Track Footings, confirmed that "in creating a blend customised to withstand temperatures exceeding 100 degrees" the firm "apparently compromised the surface's ability to drain properly". Ian Pearse (founder of the Australian-based company that produces the Pro-Ride synthetic surface) arrived in Los Angeles last week "to assist Santa Anita in trying to alter the Cushion Track surface so that it drains properly; within 24 hours, Pearse executed preliminary tests using a polymer to bind the synthetic materials that encouraged Santa Anita enough to continue pursuing a solution with the flawed Cushion Track surface, which was originally formulated with a wax-based binder". Santa Anita president Ron Charles announced: "The tests show that we've found a way to reformulate the existing Cushion Track surface. With the addition of polymers & fiber, the surface becomes kinder, more consistent & it cushions the impact of the track on the horses. It functions properly in diverse weather conditions & reduces the amount of kickback." (Jan 17)

US Owner-Breeder Arthur Appleton Dies Aged 92
Prominent US owner-breeder Arthur Appleton (whose Bridlewood Farm in Florida bred & raced Gr1-winners Forbidden Apple & Jolie's Halo) died in Ocala aged 92, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Appleton initially became involved in the thoroughbred industry as an owner in the 1960s & purchased the 1st 500 acres of Bridlewood in 1977 (the farm now encompasses 960 acres). Home-breds campaigned by Appleton include Jolie's Halo (career earner of US$1,218,120 who won the 1991 Gr1 Gulfstream Park Handicap, 1991 Gr1 Donn Handicap & 1992 Gr1 Philip Iselin Handicap); Forbidden Apple (career earner of US$1,680,640 who won the 2001 Gr1 Manhattan Handicap & finished 2nd in the 2001 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile); & multiple graded stakes-winner Icy Atlantic. Appleton was also the breeder of multiple Gr1-winner & Iskander Racing-managed Widden Shuttler Southern Image, Gr1-winner In Summation, multiple Gr1-winner David Junior & Gr2-winner Smokey Stover. Appleton served several terms on the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' & Owners' Association board of directors. (Jan 17)
