  • NEW Manikato Moved to AFL Grand Final Eve

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
The Major Spring Carnival races at Moonee Valley are undergoing significant changes, with the highlight being the Group 1 Manikato Stakes moving to AFL Grand Final Eve, according to racing.com. Additionally, the Gr2 Feehan Stakes will shift to September 27, solidifying its role as a crucial lead-up event to the Cox Plate, according to the Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC). This move marks the Manikato's return to Grand Final Eve for the first time since 2011, a decision influenced by the rise of The Everest in NSW. By scheduling the Manikato three weeks before The Everest, organizers aim to bolster both races. The rescheduling of the Manikato potentially creates a prime racing program for Australia's top sprinters, with key events spaced three weeks apart: Moir Stakes on September 7, Manikato Stakes on September 27, The Everest on October 19, and the Champions Sprint on November 9. MVRC CEO Michael Browell emphasized the strategic benefits of moving the Moir and Manikato Stakes earlier in the spring to maximize opportunities for top sprinters. The decision to shift the Manikato to Grand Final Eve follows a successful Friday race night in 2023, which drew a crowd of 7,000 due to favorable weather and limited sporting events in Melbourne. Racing Victoria's general manager of racing, Matthew Welsh, sees substantial growth potential in the AFL Grand Final Eve meeting at The Valley, especially given the convergence of thousands of visitors on Melbourne for the public holiday. Other notable program changes at The Vally include the Gr2 McEwen Stakes being pushed back to Cox Plate Day, more than a month later, and the Gr2 Stocks Stakes staying on Grand Final Eve but undergoing changes in distance and race format to differentiate it from the Feehan Stakes held the same evening.
  • NEW Karrakatta Plate Hero Reverses Form Slump

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Gingerbread Man gelding Ima Single Man has broken a run of outs in Hong Kong with a resounding all-the-way victory in the Heung Yee Kuk Cup (1200m) at Sha Tin, reports tbwa.net.au. Saturday's success was his first since January 2023 and it came about after trainer Tony Cruz decided to make a couple of gear alterations following two disappointing performances last month. "I sent him to our Conghua stable and removed the hood and blinkers," Cruz explained to stewards. "I added a visor for a Conghua trial last week and he performed well after leading. I told Angus (Chung) to lead again today and I can't believe it.  He's a very laidback, switched off type of horse but once I took the hood off, he's completely different." Ima Single Man (6g Gingerbread Man–Single Spice by Not A Single Doubt) was bred and sold by Yarradale Stud and won the G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) wearing winkers in 2020. He was sent offshore after being sold to Fion Luk Sin Fong and has now earned AUD2.13 million. Yarradale topped the 2023 Perth Magic Millions when the Blue Point filly from Single Spice made $350,000. She's been named Blue Pepper and was placed in a Lark Hill 2YO trial for trainers Grant & Alana Williams last month. Meanwhile, Single Spice has a yearling filly by Swettenham Stud's Toronado (Ire) and last year was bred back to Champion WA stallion Playing God who was responsible for the quinella in last Saturday's Listed J.C. Roberts Stakes at Ascot with Lord Vampi and Alaskan.

  • NEW Amelia’s Jewel Aims at Quokka Glory After Trial

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Glamour Perth mare Amelia’s Jewel took the first step towards the $5 million Quokka (1200m) when finishing a close second in a Belmont trial on Monday, reports rwwa.com.au. Restrained to last in a four-horse trial by jockey Pat Carbery, Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni-Bumbasina, by Canford Cliffs) closed off her 1000m heat strongly when chasing down pacesetter, Bopping Blue (Magnus). The Simon Miller-trained 4YO stood Bopping Blue a big margin entering the home straight, as much as six lengths, and was doing her best work late in an encouraging hit out. This was her first official public appearance since last year’s Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill when finishing downfield. Owner-breeder Peter Walsh said it was the perfect hit out for Amelia’s Jewel with Perth’s richest race, The Quokka, still a month away. “Patrick (Carbery) reported she felt absolutely excellent. He just allowed her to find her feet and hit the line… she’s got a bit to go yet and her grand final is still four weeks away,” Walsh told The Races WA. Carbery will partner Amelia’s Jewel when first up in the Roma Cup while Damian Lane will take over for The Quokka on April 20. Tabtouch has Amelia’s Jewel currently rated the $4 Quokka favourite, ahead of last year’s champion, Overpass Vancouver) who himself trialled in gallant fashion on Monday in Sydney.
  • NEW Empirical Data Sheds Light on Brightside Run

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Amidst all the cacophony surrounding Craig Williams’ ride on Mr Brightside in Saturday’s All-Star Mile, WFA Ratings expert Dan O’Sullivan has reduced the debate to empirical data, and there are several unequivocal facts that emerge from a racing.com report. Amongst them is that, in finishing second, Mr Brightside equalled his rating from his victory in the then $5 million All Star Mile in 2023, of 103.8. Even if he had equalled his highest ever rating – he recorded a 104.9 when winning the Cox Plate last year – it still wouldn’t have been anywhere near enough to have matched motors with Pride of Jenni whose 107.2 winning mark is easily the best to come out of the All-Star Mile in its short history. The others were Zaaki (104), Mugatoo (104.2), Regal Power (102.5) and Mystic Journey (105.5). In rejecting the notion that it was tactical error that cost the runner-up the race, O’Sullivan points to the crushing tempo set by Pride of Jenni, one which saw Mr Brightside record his fastest speed figures to the 600m in all of his career to date. O’Sullivan stated, “It defies logic developed by analysing hundreds of thousands of past horse performances in the context of early speed, late speed and position in the running to suggest that if he settled closer to that brutal speed, he would have run two lengths faster overall.” Fortunately, sanity has prevailed, and Williams has retained the mount on Mr Brightside for the Gr1 Australian Cup following an owner vote.
  • NEW Never Look a Gift Mare in the Mouth

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
In the nineties, champion New Zealand mare Sunline (Desert Sun) often provided her rivals with two stark choices: leave me alone up front and you might run a place; take me on up front and I’ll break your heart so you finish amongst the also rans. What might originally have started out as an experiment for last Saturday’s All-Star Mile heroine Pride of Jenni (Pride of Dubai) is quickly turning into a significant problem for opposition stables. Up until the end of 2022, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained 6YO was a good stakes quality mare. When she returned after a four-month break in 2023’s Mannerism Stakes (1400m), a 1.6-length third to Espiona (Extreme Choice) provided a hint she’d turned a corner, a suspicion backed up by a brilliant runner-up in the Gr1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) where she was beaten a lip behind Espiona. That was followed by some indifferent performances before she returned in the spring with a promising run in the Gr2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) won by Siyouni mare Amelia’s Jewel (1400m) behind whom she then finished second, less than a length behind Amelia’s Jewel in the weight-for-age Gr2 Stock’s Stakes over a mile at Moonee Valley (see below). Hard-ridden to find the lead in the Gr1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), Pride of Jenni led to the 150m mark before fading. Fourth-up in the Gr1 Empire Rose (1600m), where she was back to weight-for-age, the Ottebre-family raced mare won convincingly at $16, repeating the dose in the Gr1 Cantala (1600m), also at Flemington, just a week later at $14. Disrespected in the Gr1 C.F. Orr (1400m) in her summer return – she started at $9 – Pride of Jenni missed by a short head. Then came the WFA All-Star Mile where plenty of $4 was to be had. Punters who followed her in the four runs from the Empire Rose have made a motza. And, so to the inevitable discussions about the Cox Plate where she is a staggering $15 quote (money back if not nominated). A granddaughter of multiple Group 1-performed staying Zabeel mare Vouvray, out of an O’Reilly mare that won to 2200m, there is nothing to suggest the 2040m is beyond Pride of Jenni. Never look a gift mare in the mouth.

  • I Am Invincible Sets Adelaide Filly Sale Record

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
A beautifully presented filly by champion sire I Am Invincible made history when she sold for $400,000 to top Day One of the 2024 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale today. Presented by breeder Baramul Stud, the filly broke the previous record set by a daughter of Dundeel two years ago who sold for $375,000. Today's top seller is the first foal of a winning and Sydney placed Redoute's Choice half sister to Sambro. When the gavel fell at $400,000 the successful buyer of the filly was Kennewell Racing in partnership with Group 1 Bloodstock and Ridgeport Holdings. "She was a bloody good filly and I thought she probably could've been at the Gold Coast or even Easter," buyer Lloyd Kennewell said. "She's one of the best 'Vinnies' I've seen all year and that says something because we see a lot of them and there are some million dollar Vinnie fillies around. She looks like a filly that will be perfect for the race (Magic Millions 2YO Classic) next year. I knew she'd be expensive, but I didn't know where that would be, so it was tricky." Kennewell revealed, "I had Santo (Guagliardo), my client on the phone from Ridgeport Holdings in WA, and I didn't quote him that much money for her and we didn't start bidding or talking until she got to $340,000. I told him this was the one I really wanted, so we had two bids on her and we were lucky to secure her!"

  • Justify Colt Fetches $300k at Adelaide Magic Millions

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Late in the afternoon in Adelaide on Day 1 of the 2024 Magic Millions Sale, co-trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman, bidding via phone, went to $300,000 to secure a Justify colt from the draft of Rushton Park. The colt, bred by the Huddy family's Peachester Lodge, attracted strong interest when he entered the ring and Freedman's final offer was too much for a string of underbidders including the McEvoy Mitchell and Belmont Bloodstock partnership. "We are thrilled with the result," breeder Linda Huddy said. "The colt had developed nicely leading into the sale and was beautifully presented. He's from one of our nice young stakes placed mares - the sort you love to breed with. It was a great result being her first foal." The Justify colt's dam, the Savabeel mare Shop Til I Drop, was a four time winner and ran second in a Gr2 Queen of the South Stakes before retiring to stud. Earlier in the day Shane McGrath, buying for Hong Kong clients, went to $225,000 to secure a Toronado colt from the draft of Balcrest Stud."I thought he was a lovely colt," McGrath said. Across the day over $7.4 million was traded on 146 lots sold at an average price of $51,208 and clearance rate of 74 per cent. "I think the way we closed off today, we're pleased with how the day went," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.  "To have a clearance rate of 74 per cent and an average of $51,000, they're healthy numbers to finish Day 1 with." • Overpass Impresses Ahead Of Quokka Defence

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Seen for the first time since breaking his Group 1 duck in December’s Winterbottom Stakes in Perth, the Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass (Vancouver-Walkway, by Exceed And Excel) was clearly well tuned up, winning his trial in Sydney on Monday morning. Aiming to defend his title in the Quokka on April 20 in Perth, the Corumbene Stud yearling sales graduate has been in fine form since winning that race last year, finishing second narrowly on two occasions as well as securing his first elite level score from just four starts. With regular jockey Josh Parr in the saddle, the 5YO gelding jumped straight to the lead with last year’s Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Shinzo (Snitzel-Samaready, by More Than Ready) settling to his outside with James McDonald in the saddle. Giving his head rounding the turn, Overpass kept going at a solid tempo to take the trial, with the John O’Shea trained Zou Tiger (Zoustar-Tigress Lily, by Snitzel), a last start winner of the Listed Carrington Stakes, working home for second. Having his third trial this campaign since his placing in the Gr1 Coolmore Stud stakes in the Spring, Shinzo was given an easy time to finish third, while stablemate and last start Gr1 Thousand Guineas winner Joliestar (Zoustar-Jolie Bay, by Fastnet Rock) was also given an easy time, finishing fifth.

  • Shinn Rides Hong Kong Derby Hopeful in Gallop

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Jockey Blake Shinn has been booked by trainer Pierre Ng for Hong Kong Derby hopeful Galaxy Patch (Wandjina-Voltara, by More Than Ready) and rode the horse in a gallop on Monday morning, reported scmp.com. "He gave me a great feel here this morning. It's nice to have a sit on him before the big race and I can't wait for Sunday," Shinn said. "It was Pierre's idea and I was available to fly up after Saturday's racing and make it happen. I thought it was a good idea, I thought it was important to do so and I'm happy to do it. It could be the difference between winning and losing – I'll tell you after Sunday. The horse is in great order. He's in top form, it was a great run in the Group 1 behind California Spangle and I think he's trained on beautifully. He's there to run well if he can relax and run the distance out." Galaxy Patch ran second in the Gr1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup in his last start and has a record of five wins and two seconds from nine starts. Galaxy Patch's regular rider Karis Teetan will be on David Hayes-trained Star Mac (Heroic Valour-Mama Got Style, by Wicked Style) for the Derby.
  • Gavelhouse Hosts Sale of Elite Winner Maven Belle

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Te Akau Stables are offering their Gr1 winner Maven Belle (Burgundy-Doyenne, by Kilimanjaro) on the Gavelhouse auction platform, reports nzb.co.nz. "Each year we syndicate what we think are the best two or three yearlings that we've bred," Te Akau's David Ellis said. "We've had some fantastic results doing this with horses like Belle En Rouge, who won the Oaks and was NZB Filly of the Year. And the year after Belle En Rouge, we did the same thing with Maven Belle. She was champion 2YO, a top-class filly, and she comes from a beautiful family that goes back to some really top horses. From the day we first galloped Maven Belle, we knew she was a very good horse. Her win in the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes delivered a first Group One for her trainer Mark Walker since his return from Singapore, so she was a very special horse for us at Te Akau and I'm sure she'll make a lovely broodmare." Maven Belle won six of her twelve starts including the Gr1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes. Bidding ends at 7pm (NZT) on Thursday 21 March. Previously on the same platform, Te Akau Racing sold Avantage (Fastnet Rock-Asavant, by Zabeel) for a world-record price of $4.1 million, followed by Entriviere (Tavistock-Marcey's Belt, by Golan) for $900,000, Amarelinha (Savabeel-Hopscotch, by O'Reilly) for $1.1 million and Belle En Rouge (Burgundy-Cavendish Belle, by Thorn Park) for $800,000.

  • Party Time at Wyong for Well Bred 2YO

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Mid-week racing heads to Wyong on Wednesday with the opening event, the Envu Handicap (1350m), appearing an interesting contest for the juveniles. Narrowly missing on debut when run down late to finish in second, the G Ryan and S Alexiou-trained Just Party (Justify-The Party Stand, by Thorn Park) will jump from barrier 7 of 10 with jockey Tim Clark sticking strong with the colt. With plenty of pedigree on his side, being a half to the Gr3 placed Petition (Foxwedge) and to the dam of Gr2 winner Bellatrix Star (Star Witness), all out of the Gr1 The Party Stand, this colt was a $110,000 Inglis Easter yearling buy from the draft of Coolmore Stud. Fifth on debut in the Listed Merson Copper Stakes behind Silverdale Farm graduate Eneeza (Exceed And Excel) who lines up in this Saturday's Gr1 Golden Slipper, the P & P Snowden-trained Media World (Written Tycoon-Meryl, by Epaulette) took to the trials recently, winning her 1050m heat by just under a length. Drawn wide in gate nine on Wednesday, jockey Tom Sherry will partner the filly, having ridden her in the trial. Although drawn the outside barrier of 10, the C J Waller-trained Bengal (Zoustar-Mumbai Rock, by Fastnet Rock) looks capable of improving from his debut fourth when beaten a length and three-quarters. Ridden by James McDonald on debut, the Champion jockey will continue his association with the China Horse Club, Newgate Farm and partners-raced colt.
  • Autumn Glow Could Follow in Sibling’s Footsteps

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Having her first trial, the C J Waller-trained 2YO blueblood Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun-Via Africa, by Var) looks a filly to follow after her impressive performance. A half-sister to the Gr1 Golden Rose winner In The Congo (Snitzel) who will embark on covering his second book of mares this season at Newgate Farm off the back of covering 169, more than any other first season sire last year, Autumn Glow was purchased by Arrowfield Stud for $1.8m at last year’s Inglis Easter yearling sale from the draft of well respected Silverdale Farm. While Autumn Glow still has to prove herself on the racetrack, the daughter of Champion South African Sprinter Va Africa is highlighting how well the blood of South African racehorses are performing in Australia of late. Recent Gr1 Randwick Guineas winner Celestial Legend (Dundeel-Sarraqa, by Snitzel) is out of a daughter of South African Horse of the Year and triple Gr1 winner National Colour (National Assembly), who is herself the dam of Gr1 winners Rafeef and Mustaaqeem, both Australian bred sons of Snitzel. Last week’s impressive C J Waller-trained maiden winner Kirragirl (I Am Invincible-Turaathy, by Redoute’s Choice) is from the same family as Celestial Legend, continuing to highlight that the melding of bloodlines further signifies the global nature of the industry.

  • Grail Seeker Shines in Wellington Guineas

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
On the same day as the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) confirmed the NZB Filly of the Year title for Molly Bloom (Ace High), her trainers Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott also made their mark at Trentham on Saturday with another highly talented 3YO filly, reports nzb.co.nz. Wexford Stables won the $175,000 Gr2 Life Direct Wellington Guineas (1400m) in scintillating style with Molly Bloom's stablemate Grail Seeker (Iffraaj-Starwish, by Redoute's Choice). She has now had eight starts for two wins, four placings and $177,465 in stakes. Grail Seeker was ridden by visiting Australian jockey Kyle Wilson-Taylor and settled near the back of the field before producing an explosive finish in the straight. She burst to the front and powered clear, opening up a winning margin of two and three-quarter lengths over Witz End (Savabeel). "She has a very short, sharp turn of foot and we were able to ride her to execute that. I'm just very thankful for the opportunity and it is great to ride a good winner here," Wilson-Taylor said. Scott was delighted to see Grail Seeker break through with her first black-type win after a series of strong performances in stakes company. "She really deserved a win like this…she has a good future. She is a big, raw filly who is only going to get better with age."
  • Mr Brightside Ownership Group Votes on Jockey

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
The large ownership group of Mr Brightside (Bullbars-Lilahjay, by Tavistock) will vote to determine if jockey Craig Williams will retain the ride for the Gr1 Australian Cup, according to a report by racenet.com.au. There were mixed opinions about Williams’ ride on Mr Brightside in the All-Star Mile, with regards to the wide gate and whether Williams let the horse get too far back, or whether Pride of Jenni (Pride of Dubai-Sancerre, by O’Reilly) simply set a pace that was too much for the field. Mr Brightside settled 10th in the field of 12 at the 800m and was ninth with 400m to go. He ran his last 800m in 46.47 seconds, more than one second quicker than Pride Of Jenni who covered the last 800m in 47.51. "We didn't have the best barrier draw and under those circumstances … you see how far he stood them up and for him to only be beaten the margin he was beaten in the end, he went super," Williams said after the All-Star Mile. "If the plan is to go to the Australian Cup I'm looking forward to him at 10 furlongs, that's for sure." Although some industry pundits have argued that Williams should have had Mr Brightside closer in the run, the champion miler’s early splits suggest that had he attempted to match motors with Pride of Jenni, he probably would have missed the placings completely. That train of thought was echoed in comments columns, with the suggestion that Williams was damned if he did, and equally damned if he didn’t…

  • Rothesay Passing Leaves a Gap for Queensland

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
Glenlogan Park and Lyndhurst Stud have announced the passing of esteemed Queensland stallion Rothesay at the age of 17. Renowned as one of the state's premier sires in recent times, Rothesay swiftly established his reputation in the breeding realm, with notable stakes winners such as Havasay, In His Stride, and Too Good To Refuse emerging in his debut 2012 season. In the subsequent years, Rothesay's prowess was duly recognized, earning him the title of Queensland's Champion First Season Sire in 2014/15, followed by consecutive Stallion of the Year honors in 2016/17 and 2017/18. Among his impressive progeny is Chapter And Verse, victor of the 2019 Group 3 George Moore Stakes and the prestigious 2019 $1 million Magic Millions QTIS Open. However, it was Rothfire who truly elevated the stallion's legacy, securing his Group 1 triumph in the 2020 JJ Atkins alongside multiple Group 2 victories. Steve Morley, speaking on behalf of Glenlogan Park, remarked, "He was an exceptional horse to work with, and I believe his influence through his daughters will endure in the breeding industry for years to come." Rothesay's career on the track, though brief, was marked by brilliance, culminating in four wins from just eight starts, notably dominating the Gr2 Queensland Guineas. Following his retirement, Rothesay stood initially at Glenlogan Park before concluding his breeding career with the Kruger family at Lyndhurst Stud. Principal Jeff Kruger fondly recalled Rothesay as "a stallion of impeccable temperament, both in the breeding shed and beyond. His absence will be felt not only by us at Lyndhurst but by the entire breeding and racing community."
  • Fashion Shoot Eyes Gr1 Glory After Nailbiter

    Tuesday, 19th March 2024
With a thrilling victory in Saturday’s BOP Equine Vets Open Handicap (1400m), classy mare Fashion Shoot headlined a big day at Tauranga for Te Akau Racing and set herself up for a Group 1 assignment at the end of this month, reports loveracing.nz. Saturday’s $50,000 race was a milestone victory for Fashion Shoot (Savabeel-High Fashion, by O’Reilly), who took her career earnings past the $300,000 barrier, booked herself a ticket to the Gr1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie on March 30. Ridden by Kelly Myers, Fashion Shoot settled in third-last among Saturday’s small but select field of eight. The race developed into a four-horse war down the straight, with Fashion Shoot striding up on the outside of the quality Andrew Forsman-trained pair of Mustang Valley and Saint Bathans, while Karman Line poked through along the inside. There was little separating the quartet through the last 50m, but Fashion Shoot lunged at the line and snatched victory by a nose. Fashion Shoot has now had 31 starts for seven wins, 13 placings and $304,980 in stakes for the Te Akau In Vogue Syndicate. “It was a really good win today and should give her that winning confidence before heading into the Breeders’ Stakes,” Walker said. “She’s been a good consistent mare for a long time, she’s having a great season as a 6YO and she’s going to make a beautiful broodmare when she’s finished racing. She’s got a great pedigree.”
