At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Gr1-winning & 4-time Gr1-placed Vinery Stud stallion Mossman (Success Express-Lichen Lady, by Twig Moss) added a Group race success when 4YO grey mare White Moss (Mossman-Pay My Bail, by Justice Prevails) showed a sparkling turn of foot to claim her maiden stakes win in the $150,000 Gr3 Nivison (1200m) for 4YO+ mares, defeating Zestful & Kinshachi. A homebred for the Esplin family, White Moss is out of the Gr2 Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes & Gr3 Lion Red Plate winning New Zealand mare Pay My Bail and is a half-sister to Listed ATC Festival Stakes winner White Sage. Her impressive record now reads 5 wins and 1 placing from 8 starts for $213,120 in earnings. Trainer Jason Coyle said he will now sit down and find a suitable race over the Melbourne spring carnival for White Moss but admitted the best of her will not be seen until next year. "We cuddled her early in her career because she's not an overly big mare and now she's really rewarding our patience," Coyle told Sky Racing. "Through the line she's always been strong so I'm hopeful she will run a mile but you never really know until you ask them to try." Coyle added: "In the autumn there's races like the Coolmore [Gr1] but we'll see how we go. Ultimately the long-term goal is to take her to Queensland to try to get that elusive Group 1 - the Tatts Tiara."

Single Gaze Ready for Biggest Test

Friday, 20th October 2017

Jockey Kathy O'Hara is confident that Single Gaze (Not a Single Doubt-Redaluca's Gaze, by Intergaze) will have no problem running out a strong 2400 metres in tomorrow's Gr1 Caulfield Cup despite never being tested over the journey, reports Sky Racing. The only time Single Gaze competed over 12 furlongs was in the 2016 Australian Oaks as a 3YO when she dislodged O'Hara shortly after the start. However, she has proven very affective over a mile-and-a-quarter winning the Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes at three and also landing the Gr2 PJ O'Shea Stakes over 2200 metres in Brisbane during the winter. "I think she'll be all right with the journey," O'Hara said. "Her prep has been faultless. She's gotten miles in her legs and everything has gone to plan so far." O'Hara added: "She's only got to go another furlong which I think she'll have no trouble with. She feels like she'll just go all day." O'Hara's only other ride in a Caulfield Cup was aboard Wild Iris in 2005 when she was unplaced by Railings. "It's been a long time, over 10 years. I'm really, really excited and she's a genuine each-way chance," she said. "Single Gaze is on song and I'm looking forward to it." Single Gaze is currently at $34 fixed odds with TAB.

Roy H Claims Gr1 for More Than Ready

Monday, 9th October 2017

At Santa Anita Park in the US, Vinery Stud's champion shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo-Woodman's Girl, by Woodman) celebrated an elite race success when 5YO gelding Roy H (More Than Ready-Elusive Diva, by Elusive Quality) fulfilled the potential he had always shown when scoring by 1 length in the Gr1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship (6 furlongs), defeating Mr Hinx & American Anthem. Roy H improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 True North Stakes at Belmont) and 5 placings (including the Gr1 Bing Crosby Stakes) from 16 starts for $534,765 in earnings. “He always had this ability,” trainer Peter Miller told Thoroughbred Daily News. “As a colt, as a younger horse, he just never seemed to put it together. Once we gelded him and gave him some time off, he just blossomed into a different horse. He’s all business and just a very, very good horse. Hopefully we get to see this horse again in the Breeders’ Cup.”

At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Arrowfield Stud's incumbent Champion Australian Sire Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) added a Group success when 4YO bay entire Russian Revolution (Snitzel-Ballet d'Amour, by Stravinsky) resumed with an impressive victory in the $200,000 Gr2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) for 3YO+, defeating Heatherly & Houtzen. Russian Revolution improved his record to 6 wins (including the Gr1 Galaxy, Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes & Gr3 Vain Stakes) from 9 starts for $982,225 in earnings. Russian Revolution races in the red and yellow star silks of the China Horse Club which purchased him for $320,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Vinery Stud. Russian Revolution is a direct descendant of celebrated blue hen Fanfreluche, ancestress of former champion Australian sires Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur, and Coolmore stallion Holy Roman Emperor.Co-trainer Paul Snowden said Russian Revolution will have his next start in the Gr1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Mooney Valley on 29 September and is hoping he can attract the support of a slot-holder for the inaugural $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 14 October. "We targeted this race on purpose because it was a barrier trial for the Moir Stakes in a couple of weeks' time so it was a good indication to see how he handled it," Snowden told racing.com. "The Moir will be a crucial lead-up to The Everest and it's probably going to be a lot stronger than what it's been in the last few years."

More Than Ready Adds US Gr3

Friday, 1st September 2017

At Saratoga racecourse in the US, Vinery Stud's champion shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo-Woodman's Girl, by Woodman) added a Group success when 2YO bay colt Catholic Boy (More Than Ready-Song Of Bernadette, by Bernardini) rallied strongly in the straight to score by length for trainer Jonathan Thomas in the US$150,000 Gr3 With Anticipation Stakes (8.5 furlongs) for 2YOs, defeating Irish Territory & Untamed Domain. "He's screaming for distance. I'm impressed with him knowing he didn't get the cleanest trip and he negotiated some pockets and holes and overcame it," Thomas told Blood Horse. "Obviously, the goal would be to get to the Breeders' Cup from here with a possible start in the Pilgrim in between, but we'll see." In becoming More Than Ready's 175th stakes winner, Catholic Boy extended his unbeaten record to 2 wins from 2 starts. More Than Ready is featured in the 2017 Sires edition which can be opened by clicking on the image below.

Pariah Opens Favourite For Gr2 San Domenico

Tuesday, 22nd August 2017

Meanwhile, Pariah (see above article) has been opened as a fairly short favourite for Saturday's Gr3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. Won last year by Vinery Stud's exciting 2017 freshman sire Star Turn, the San Domenico is one of the traditional seasonal pipe-openers for 3YOs. Pariah, who finished runner-up in the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes at his penultimate run, is the TAB's $2.50 favourite, ahead of Condor Heroes (runner-up in the Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes on April Fools Day) and exciting filly Tulip, scratched last Saturday, who placed in the Gr1 Golden Slipper). The duo is at $6, ahead of $8 quotes Jorda and Marsupial.

Caulfield Cup Aim for Single Gaze

Tuesday, 15th August 2017

Canberra trainer Nick Olive has confirmed that Single Gaze will be aimed at the $3.15 million Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in the spring, reports racing.com. "She'll start off in the Memsie. That'll be a starting point for her," Olive said. "She'll do all her racing in Melbourne at this stage. The Makybe Diva [Gr1] and the Underwood [Gr1] maybe after that, and then the Caulfield Cup." A winner of the Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes as a 3YO, Single Gaze (Not a Single Doubt-Redaluca's Gaze, by Intergaze) didn't race for ten months after she was involved in a heavy fall in the Australian Oaks at her following start. However, the now 5YO showed she was back to her best when recording stakes wins in the Listed Tails Handicap (1600m) and Gr2 PJ O'Shea Stakes (2200m) in Brisbane during the winter. Despite having only a short break since finishing third behind Chocante in the Gr2 Brisbane Cup in June, Olive insists Single Gaze thrives on a tight turnaround. "She holds her fitness very well off these short breaks, and it's when she races best when she's had these short breaks and she comes in with residual fitness is when she has her best campaigns to be honest," he said.

Blue Blooded Rose Blooms on Debut

Monday, 31st July 2017

Blue blooded filly Bollinger Rose made a low-key but winning debut at Gosford on the NSW Central Coast on Saturday. Trained by Kris Lees on behalf of owner Vinery Stud, Bollinger Rose was sent out as the dominant $1.50 favourite after finishing runner-up to her multiple Gr1 winning stable-mate Le Romain in a Newcastle trial two weeks ago. Despite the strong market support, the 3YO daughter of More Than Ready was really made to work for her win when scoring by 0.23 length over Ammate & Apache Dude in the Harvey Norman 3YO Maiden Handicap over 1000m. Retained to race by Vinery after being passed in shy of her $350,000 reserve at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Bollinger Rose is the last foal of beautifully bred Gr1 Coolmore Classic winner Bollinger (Dehere-Bint Marscay) who died last year. Bollinger, who is out of Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay, had six foals make it to the races with the best performed hitherto being the US-bred Friesan Fire (A.P. Indy), winner of the Gr2 Louisiana Derby, Gr3 Risen Star Stakes & Gr3 Lecomte Stakes. This makes Bollinger Rose a direct descendant of influential mare Eau D'Etoile (Sir Tristram), ancestress also of outstanding dual Gr1-winning miler Filante, Australian Guineas winner Kenny's Best Pal, Victoria Derby winner Benicio, and Gr1 Australia Stakes winner Stella Cadente.

Light Spring for Gr1 Winner

Tuesday, 18th July 2017

Classy southern filly La Diosa will be sparingly raced when she returns to competition in the new season, reports NZ Racing Desk. The rising 4YO, who became the first Group One winner for champion racehorse So You Think when landing the Gr1 New Zealand 1,000 Guineas in November, has begun her spring build-up after a break following mixed results from her Sydney campaign. La Diosa crossed the Tasman in the autumn and made an instant impact winning the Gr2 Surround Stakes in her Australian debut, before failing at her subsequent starts on heavy ground in the Gr1 Coolmore Classic, Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes, and Australian Oaks. "She was pretty tired after that and she had a good break. She had two months in the paddock and she looks a lot stronger, she's pretty happy in herself," said Matt Brown, who trains La Diosa with his wife Mandy. "She's been back for three weeks and she's ticking over nicely." He added: "We're not making any great plans and she'll probably have a quiet year and we'll see how she comes up with maybe a couple of starts at the Riccarton carnival." Options there include the Gr2 Coupland's Bakeries Mile or the Gr3 Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders' Stakes.

Sibling to Golden Slipper Winner Set for Debut

Wednesday, 12th July 2017

Fine Scent, a 2YO half-sister to Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, is set to make her debut for trainer Simon Miller in the Awesome Rock Plate (1000m) at Belmont racecourse in Perth today. A $210,000 purchase by Aquanita Racing at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Baramul Stud, Fine Scent is by Vinery Stud's 4-time Gr1 winning stallion All Too Hard out of the stakes-placed mare Patou (Covetous). Polar Success won 4 of her 17 starts, including the 2003 Golden Slipper & Gr2 Reisling Slipper Trial, for career earnings of $2,171,505. This is the esteemed Gold Vink family of deceased Australian Oaks heroine Circles Of Gold, her Gr1 winning sons Elvstroem and Haradasun, 4-time Gr1-winning sire Starspangledbanner, and globetrotting Gr1 winner Highland Reel and his Gr2 Hardwicke Stakes winning brother Idaho.

At Ipswich in south east Queensland, Emirates Park Stud & Aquis Farm stallion Al Maher (Danehill-Show Dancing, by Don't Say Halo) added a black-type success when 4YO bay gelding Monsieur Gustave (Al Maher-Saigon Moonlight, by Stravinsky) rallied strongly in the straight after looking beaten to score a brilliant win in the $175,000 Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) for 3YO+, defeating In His Stride & Federal. This was the first stakes victory for the highly talented Monsieur Gustave who advanced his record to 5 wins and 3 placings from 14 starts for $230,400 in earnings. Purchased by McLachlan Place Racing Stables for $34,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Vinery Stud, Monsieur Gustave is out of a full-sister to the dam of former champion sprinter Lankan Rupee. This is also the female family of Victoria Derby winning stallion Grosvenor, Australian Oaks winner Mahaya, and her half-sister Shadea, dam of champion racehorse and stallion Lonhro.Trainer Daryl Hansen now plans to target the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast in a fortnight with Monsieur Gustave provided he recovers well, reports Racing Queensland Webnews. "This is just as exciting as some of my other big race wins," he said. "He'll go on to the Glasshouse in two weeks now. He's a great horse but he's had a few problems which we've finally sorted out."

Star Turn Full-Brother On Debut In South Africa

Friday, 9th June 2017

Few 3YOs caught the eye in Australia this season as much as Star Turn (Star Witness-Golden Delicious, by Made of Gold). That makes Sunday's racetrack debut on the other side of the world of his younger full-brother most intriguing. Named Shufoog by Shadwell Stud Australia, who purchased him for $300,000 from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2016 Inglis Easter Sale, the colt has been accepted for a 1160m maiden at Turffontein in Johannesburg. His 14 carded opposition don't appear to be overly strong and connections will be expecting a forward showing by the youngster. Meanwhile, the brilliantly fast Star Turn, who finished his career with four consecutive Gr1 placings (including against open company), is waiting to serve his debut season at Vinery Stud where he is proving very popular off a $22,000 service fee. Vinery's Adam White said, “Star Turn has been very well received by breeders in what will be his first season at stud this year. People are obviously aware of his on pace speed and what imposing looks he possesses." White revealed, "A lot of breeders have come to see him already and are taken with his great strength, balance and athleticism. His pedigree suits a wide range of mares and this will ensure he has a great future at stud."

Track Work Acid Test For Mongolian Wolf

Tuesday, 6th June 2017

Leading trainer Darren Weir will wait until after this morning's track gallop to decide whether or not exciting 3YO Mongolian Wolf (Pluck-Oomaroo, by Tale of the Cat) will take his place in Saturday's Gr1 Queensland Derby. According to horseracing.com.au, Weir acknowledged that the son of Vinery Stud shuttler Pluck was, with the benefit of hindsight, ridden upside down when finishing a long way off the pace in his last start at Caufield, saying, "We probably should have let him be out the back, lob along and let him run home, but we took up a position thinking we could win the race and it didn't work out." In his first start for the stable, the Kiwi import showed his true colours for new owners Australian Bloodstock with an eye-catching victory in the Gr3 Frank Packer Plate at Randwick.

Lees to Train Million Dollar Filly

Friday, 2nd June 2017

The China Horse Club has entrusted Newcastle-based trainer Kris Lees with caring for smart filly Nurse Kitchen for the remainder of her racing career, reports racenet. Nurse Kitchen, a winner of the Gr2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic and runner-up in the Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes in the autumn, was knocked down to Michael Wallace on behalf of the China Horse Club for $1.7 million at Tuesday's opening session of the Magic Millions National broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast. "She arrived this morning [Thursday] in great order as you'd expect a filly that was just sold for that sort of money," Lees said. "She's arrived with about two weeks of light pre-training so we'll just continue on that path and learn about her every day." Lees is looking forward to seeing how Nurse Kitchen, a daughter of multiple Champion Sire Savabeel, performs in the spring, but said he doesn't expect her to fully mature until the autumn. "We'll see where she stands in the spring with the view that the autumn is probably where she will come into her own," he said. "She's got a similar profile to Lucia Valentina. She obviously won the Vinery whereas Nurse Kitchen ran second and then they were competitive in the Oaks."

Telperion to Stand at Westbury Stud

Friday, 19th May 2017

Street Cry's well-performed son Telperion (Street Cry-Yavanna, by Redoute's Choice) has joined the stallion roster at Westbury Stud, reports NZ Racing Desk. Farm principal Gerry Harvey has purchased a significant interest in the Godolphin-bred colt, who was a high-class juvenile in Sydney. Telperion was a winner of the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) defeating subsequent VRC Derby victory Prized Icon, before finishing a close-up fourth behind champion 2YO Capitalist in the Gr1 Golden Slipper and second to star filly Yankee Rose in the Gr1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes. Westbury general manager Russell Warwick said Telperion had come highly recommended by jockey James McDonald. "One of the first people I rang about the horse was James and he said he's a beautiful animal, he was very, very complimentary," Warwick said. "He had a serious turn of foot, a quality we look for in all of our stallions." Telperion is the first foal of the Redoute's Choice mare Yavanna, herself a daughter of dual Gr3 winner Wild Queen, and is a direct descendant of VRC & Queensland Oaks winner and celebrated blue hen Denise's Joy. This is one of the most sought-after families in the Australian Stud Book and includes the likes of 8-time Gr1 winner More Joyous, Australian Oaks winner Sunday Joy, 4-time Gr1 winner Tuesday Joy, deceased Gr1-winning stallion Thorn Park, and Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes winner Fenway, among many others. The Street Cry x Redoute's Choice cross has been a notable one and is responsible for eight stakes performers, including Gr1 winner Stay With Me. Telperion will stand at a fee of $5,000 + GST, while a select number of lifetime breeding rights will be available to breeders.

Stars Aligning for Single Gaze

Thursday, 18th May 2017

Canberra trainer Nick Olive believes the stars are aligning for Single Gaze ahead of Saturday's Gr1 Doomben Cup (200m), reports Racing Queensland Webnews. A winner of last year's Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes, Single Gaze (Not a Single Doubt-Redaluca's Gaze, by Intergaze) didn't race for ten months after she was involved in a heavy fall in the Australian Oaks at her next start. The 4YO finally returned to the winner's circle with a strong win in the Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) at Doomben last month, before producing a top Doomben Cup trial when runner-up to It's Somewhat in the Gr2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast twelve days ago. She will attempt to become only the fifth mare to win the Cup in its 84-year history. "It's Somewhat is the one to beat but I'm looking forward to taking him on over 2000 metres," Olive said. After Saturday, Olive said Single Gaze could run in the Gr2 O'Shea Stakes (2200m) at Eagle Farm on 3 June before preparing for a Melbourne spring campaign aimed at the Caulfield Cup. "She's never been to Melbourne but she has worked well their way of going and is a natural on the other leg," Olive said. "If Winx wasn't headed for the Cox Plate we'd go that way but we won't be taking Winx on and we'll go after the Caulfield Cup."

Single Gaze Thriving Ahead of Hollindale

Thursday, 4th May 2017

Gr1 winner Single Gaze (Not a Single Doubt-Redaluca's Gaze, by Intergaze) has arrived at the Gold Coast ahead of Saturday's Gr2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m), reports AAP. A winner of last year's Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes, Single Gaze didn't race for ten months after she was involved in a heavy fall in the Australian Oaks at her next start. However, trainer Nick Olive has worked wonders with the 4YO who returned to her best with a strong win in the Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) at Doomben twelve days ago. "I couldn't be happier with the way she looked," said Olive, upon arriving at the Gold Coast to oversee Single Gaze's preparation. "She galloped on Tuesday and went very well. She should be spot-on for the 1800 metres on Saturday." Olive added: "You haven't seen the best of her yet and I hope she can win some more stakes races this winter." Olive confirmed that Single Gaze's primary winter target is the Gr1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on 20 May.

Gr1 Australasian Oaks Field & Barriers

Wednesday, 3rd May 2017

The final field has been declared and the barrier draw conducted for the $500,000 Gr1 Australasian Oaks (2010m) to be run at Morphettville in Adelaide on Saturday. The highest rated horse in the race is the David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Harlow Gold, who will be hoping to finally break through at the top level following Gr1 placings in the VRC Oaks in the spring and the Vinery Stud Stakes in the autumn. But arguably the two fillies to concentrate on will be the Darren Weir-trained Kenedna, a last-start impressive winner of the Gr3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) in Adelaide, and the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart, a daughter of Sebring who has looked very smart winning 4 of her 6 starts. Kenedna and Egg Tart have both drawn perfectly in barriers three and five respectively.

Hayes Upbeat Despite Harlow Draw

Wednesday, 3rd May 2017

Co-trainer Ben Hayes says the stable expects Harlow Gold to run well in Saturday’s Gr1 Australasian Oaks despite drawing poorly for the $500,000 fillies feature. Harlow Gold (Tavistock), who will be seeking to break through at the top level following Gr1 placings in the VRC Oaks in the spring and more recently the Vinery Stud Stakes in Sydney, has drawn barrier 19 in a field of 16 plus 4 emergencies. “She has done really well and I think the heavy tracks up in Sydney didn’t really suit her,” Hayes told ANZ Bloodstock News. “She looks to have freshened up well and she worked well on Monday morning, she worked home nicely on the bridle, so it is all looking good for her except for barrier 19.” Harlow Gold’s most recent performance was a fourth place finish (beaten 11 lengths) behind Bonneval in the Gr1 Australian Oaks on 8 April.

Gr1 Australasian Oaks Nominations

Tuesday, 2nd May 2017

A total of 28 fillies have been nominated for Saturday's $500,000 Gr1 Australasian Oaks (2010m) at Morphettville. Heading the field on ratings is the David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Harlow Gold who will be hoping to finally break through at the top level following Gr1 placings in the VRC Oaks in the spring and the Vinery Stud Stakes in the autumn. But arguably the two fillies to concentrate on when markets open will be the Darren Weir-trained Kenedna, a last-start impressive winner of the Gr3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) in Adelaide, and the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart, a daughter of Sebring who has looked very smart winning 4 of her 6 starts. Patience to Reward Single Gaze

Thursday, 20th April 2017

Trainer Nick Olive believes Gr1 winner Single Gaze is close to producing her best form after a long stint on the sidelines. A winner of last year's Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes, Single Gaze didn't race for ten months after she was involved in a heavy fall in the Australian Oaks at her next start. The daughter of Not a Single Doubt has had three runs back this campaign, including a last-start third in the Gr3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on 25 March. Olive is hopeful that the 4YO can land a major prize over the Brisbane winter carnival, commencing with this Saturday's $100,000 Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) at Doomben. "She was lucky to come through it [the fall] the way she did. I got her back in the spring and she was only 90 per cent and we did not want her to race like that," Olive told AAP. "It wouldn't have been fair to her because she always gives 100 per cent." Olive added: "I decided to let her have a longer break but we are seeing the benefit of it now. She has been great since we had her back." Single Gaze will be ridden by regular jockey Kathy O'Hara and will carry 58kg on Saturday.
