Darley Target for Vega Magic

Tuesday, 31st October 2017

Lindsay Park have confirmed that star sprinter Vega Magic (Lope de Vega-Admirable, by Magic Albert) will press on towards the $1 million Gr1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday week. The dual Group 1 winner finished an unlucky fifth (beaten 2.75 lengths) behind Hey Doc in Friday night's Gr1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley after striking interference in the straight. "We'll press on towards the Darley with Vega Magic," co-trainer Tom Dabernig said. "Obviously he's never been down the straight before but at this stage I think that's what we'll do." Dabernig added: "He's sound but we'll keep an eye on him over the next few days." The former West Australian-trained galloper is already a two-time Group 1 winner of the Goodwood Handicap (1200m) and Memsie Stakes (1400m). He was also considered unlucky when second to Redzel in The Everest at his penultimate start after starting from an outside gate.

At Caulfield in Melbourne, French 2000 Guineas & French Derby-winning shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal-Lady Vettori, by Vettori) celebrated a pinnacle Gr1 success when 5YO gelding Vega Magic (Lope de Vega-Admirable, by Magic Albert) saluted for trainers David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig in the Gr1 NZB Memsie Stakes (1400m) by an extending 1.8-lengths, defeating the Darren Weir stable pairing of Black Heart Bart and Tosen Stardom. Still unbeaten since leaving Western Australia, Vega Magic, who hails from the family of Golden Slipper winner Century Miss, advanced his record to 12 wins (including the Gr1 Goodwood Stakes, Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes & Gr3 AJ Scahill Stakes) and 3 placings from 16 starts for $2,026,550 earnings. The scintillating all the way victory not only confirmed his ability to stretch his raw speed at the top level but also further enhanced his undeniable chance should he gain a position in the inaugural The Everest at Royal Randwick on October 14.

At Caulfield in Melbourne, French 2000 Guineas & French Derby-winning shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal-Lady Vettori, by Vettori) celebrated a stakes success when 5YO gelding Vega Magic (Lope de Vega-Admirable, by Magic Albert) saluted for trainers David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) by 0.4-length, defeating Japanese bred Brave Smash and Santa Ana Lane. Vega Magic remains unbeaten since leaving his home state of West Australia. Vega Magic, who hails from the family of Golden Slipper winner Century Miss, advanced his record to 11 wins (including the Gr1 Goodwood Stakes, Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes & Gr3 AJ Scahill Stakes) and 3 placings from 16 starts for $1,424,550 earnings. There is speculation that the WA star could be tapped for a spot in The Everest following a crack in the Memsie Stakes in two weeks. According to horseracing.com.au, co-trainer David Hayes commented, "He will be freshened up [after the Memsie] and hopefully somebody wants him for The Everest."

Everest Hopefuls to Trial

Thursday, 3rd August 2017

Lindsay Park's Group One-winning sprinters Redkirk Warrior and Vega Magic will trial at Flemington on Friday as they step up their preparations for the spring, reports AAP. Former Hong Kong-based speedster Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato-Flag, by Selkirk) broke through at the elite level when scoring an explosive first-up win in the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap in March. He could return in the Gr2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on 16 September. Meanwhile, Vega Magic (Lope de Vega-Admirable, by Magic Albert) continued the impressive strike rate of WA sprinters in the eastern states when landing the Gr1 Goodwood at Morphettville in May. The Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on 19 August has been earmarked as his possible return. Both gallopers are being aimed at the inaugural $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 14 October.

At Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide, French 2000 Guineas & French Derby winning shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal-Lady Vettori, by Vettori) celebrated an elite race success when 4YO chestnut gelding Vega Magic (Lope de Vega-Admirable, by Magic Albert) landed the biggest prize of his career for new trainers David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig when winning the $1 million Gr1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) for 3YO+, defeating Missrock & Casino Wizard. Having his first start outside of his home state of West Australia, Vega Magic, who hails from the family of Golden Slipper winner Century Miss, advanced his record to 10 wins (including the Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes & Gr3 AJ Scahill Stakes) and 3 placings from 15 starts for $1,352,050 earnings. Trainer David Hayes said Vega Magic had trialled impressively prior to his eastern states debut and that he would now be aimed at the inaugural $10 million The Everest (1200m) in Sydney on 14 October. "He trialled very well and while you can't be too confident in a Goodwood of this class…the track work he was doing suggested he had to be an outstanding horse," Hayes old racing.com. "He did one gallop up our hill at Lindsay Park which had to be seen to be believed." Hayes added: "We'll probably back off him because I think he'd be an ideal horse for The Everest and there might be someone out there with a ticket that might want to share with us."

Flying Jess Wins Listed Magic Millions 3YO Guineas

Monday, 16th January 2017

At the Gold Coast in Queensland, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning & 4-time Gr1-placed stallion Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) added a restricted black-type success when 3YO filly Flying Jess (Hinchinbrook-Maritess, by Magic Albert) scored by 0.3 length at huge odds of $101 for trainer John Moloney in the $2 million Listed (R) Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO fillies Global Glamour (Star Witness-Spectacula, by Testa Rossa) & Eckstein (I Am Invincible-Comrie, by Choisir). The $1.65 favourite and previously unbeaten colt Winning Rupert appeared to fail to run out a strong seven furlongs, fading late to finish fourth. Flying Jess's surprise win improved her record to 2 wins (including the Gr3 SA Sires' Produce Stakes) and 2 placings from 12 starts for $1,296,430 earnings. Hailing from the same family as Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Dinky Flyer (her third dam), Flying Jess was purchased by Prime Thoroughbreds for $60,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Milburn Creek. Trainer John Moloney said Flying Jess would be aimed at races such as the Gr1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in the autumn.

Port Double For Arlington

Monday, 14th November 2016

Emerging Tamalee Farm stallion Arlington (Red Ransom-Savannah Success, by Success Express) continued his strong start to the 2016-17 racing season when 3YO daughters Fast Arli (Arlington-Fasting, by Anabaa) & Magic Arli (Arlington-Firefly Magic, by Magic Albert) scored a double at Port Macquarie late last week. It was Fast Arli's second win from her past three starts, while Magic Arli brought her maiden victory up at her second start, having placed on debut. Geelong Return For Begg

Tuesday, 5th July 2016

After a 19-month hiatus from the sport, Grahame Begg will saddle up his first runners at today's Geelong synthetic meeting in Melbourne. Formerly based at Royal Randwick in Sydney, Begg took a break at the end of 2014 citing lifestyle issues and an increasingly competitive Sydney market. Begg, who now trains out of the Pinecliff racing facility on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, will be represented by two runners today, with 3YO gelding Emoji (Denman) looking to post his first win in race one and 3YO Magic Word set to make his debut in race four. Magic Word (Magic Albert) will sport the familiar Begg family colours of black, white and red that were carried to Gr1 glory by former stable stars such as Bonanova and Monopolize. "I'm fit and well and raring to go," Begg told racenet. "I'm pretty happy with the way everything's going and we're just feeling our way to be absolutely truthful. We've just got half a dozen in work at the moment and we've got some more horses being broken in at this point in time." He added: "We're just starting off with small steps but we've certainly room for more horses. I'm doing a lot of stuff myself and very hands-on so I'm just working away. We'll just take things as they come."

Tales Of Grimm Wins Listed Spear Chief Handicap

Monday, 27th June 2016

At Eagle Farm in Brisbane, talented 7YO US-bred gelding Tales Of Grimm (Distorted Humor-Stupendous Miss, by Dynaformer) registered the second black-type victory of his career when scoring by 0.8-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $100,000 Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Amovatio (Al Maher-Grand Ovation, by Scenic) & 7YO gelding Aldini (Magic Albert-Ebbtide, by Spinning World). Tales Of Grimm improved his record to 5 wins (including the Listed Scone Cup) and 3 placings (including the Gr3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket) from 26 start for $348,796 earnings. By two-time Champion North American sire Distorted Humor from the Gr2-winning Dynaformer mare Stupendous Miss, Tales Of Grimm is a full-brother to Gr2 Zabeel Mile winner Do It All and is a direct descendant of South Ocean, dam of champion European racehorse Storm Bird.

Gr1 Target For Exciting Vega Magic

Wednesday, 8th June 2016

Exciting young West Australian sprinter Vega Magic (Lope de Vega-Admirable, by Magic Albert) will be aimed at the Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes later in the year, reports the West Australian. The 3YO improved his record to 5 wins from 8 starts when romping to an impressive 5.5-length win in a 1200m benchmark race at Belmont on Saturday. Trainer Sean Casey has decided to bypass the $100,000 Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) on 25 June to keep chasing the Westspeed bonuses over shorter courses until the end of the season. "He definitely will get further, but he can stay at the short courses while he is eligible for the bonuses," Casey said. "He is getting the same stake money as he would in a feature race and with the times he is running over the short course, we can wait." Casey has mapped out a tentative programme that includes the Gr3 Prince of Wales Stakes (1200m) on 29 October, and the Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) on 12 November as lead-up races for the weight-for-age Winterbottom (1200m) on 26 November. "My wife Kristy did the early work on Vega Magic, because I was away in Broome. He stamped himself then as a horse who was gifted," said Casey. "It was always the plan to nurse him along because we believed he would not mature until he was four years old." Interestingly, Vega Magic hails from the same female family as Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Century Miss.

Millions National Weanling Sale Off To Positive Start

Monday, 30th May 2016

Meanwhile, New South Wales based nursery Amarina Farm snapped up a couple of exciting prospects including the second top seller on the day - the Not a Single Doubt-Wilde Irish Song colt - from Bell River Thoroughbreds for $280,000. That colt is the first foal of a Magic Albert winning half sister to Gr1 Australian Oaks winner Once Were Wild. One of the day's other top sellers was the I Am Invincible-Radiant Star colt also from the Bell River Thoroughbreds Dispersal and purchased by Sheamus Mills Bloodstock for $250,000. "I thought he was one of the nicer colts in the sale," Mills said. "He's by a proven sire who's a horse on the up. He's a nice horse who can come back here and hopefully make $400,000 or $500,000." A number of first season sires enjoyed positive results, none more so than Zoustar, a former star galloper who interestingly was sold at the same sale as a weanling. The dual Gr1 winning son of Northern Meteor had two colts sell for $250,000. The Armanjena colt from Kambula Stud sold to Amarina Farm, while James Bester secured the Sun Maid colt from the Bell View Park Stud Dispersal. "I loved him. I thought he was the best of the Zoustars. He was an outstanding walker - there's no question that he's the best mover in this sale," Bester said. At the close of trade, 152 lots had been sold for a gross of over $8.3 million at an average price of $54,625. The clearance rate was climbing and is well up on last year's corresponding opening day. "The National Sale has got away to a good solid start with a very healthy clearance rate of 84 per cent," Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox said, noting that 28 lots sold for $100,000 or more. "Competition was extremely strong for the desired lots. While the turnover and average are down on last year we expect that to improve tomorrow," he added.

High Class Lots Added To Major Inglis Sale

Friday, 29th April 2016

Eight final supplementary Lots have been added to the 2016 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale catalogue including weanlings by Snitzel and Not a Single Doubt and a mare in foal to Redoute's Choice. As inspections get underway at Newmarket, strong performances this season from Kermadec, Japonisme, Yankee Rose and Extreme Choice, plus a sale-topping yearling last month, highlight the opportunities that lie within an Inglis Broodmare catalogue. Earner of nearly $3 million, Kermadec's first trip through a sale ring was in 2011, when his dam Hy Fuji carried him in-utero at the Inglis Broodmare Sale in Sydney. Des Hawkins of Wentwood Grange went to $46,000 for the mare before taking her to New Zealand where she foaled down the son of Teofilo. Another mare whose value has skyrocketed after being sold in Sydney is Condesaar, the dam of this year's brilliant Gr1 ATC Sires' Produce winner and crowd favourite Yankee Rose. A half-sister to NZ Derby winner Redoute's Dancer and in foal to Magic Albert, Condesaar was snapped up by Jonathan Davies of JD Thoroughbreds for $6,000 at last year's Broodmare sale. Among highlight lots stepping into the ring at Newmarket for a second time are the dams of Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice and Coolmore Stakes victor Japonisme. Extremely was purchased carrying Extreme Choice at the 2013 sale by Bell River Thoroughbreds, who are dispersing all their breeding stock at this year's sale including Extremely (Lot 311) carrying a full-relation to her 2016 Blue Diamond Stakes winner. Japonisme was a yearling when his dam went through the Inglis Broodmare Sale in 2014 and now the producer of a Group 1 winner, Haiku will be offered as Lot 783 next week. All-up, 888 Lots, including 667 fillies and mares have been catalogued for the 2016 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale to be held at Inglis' Newmarket Complex on 1, 2, 3 and 4 May. Click here to view the online catalogue.
