There's an old expression that says you make your money when you buy, not when you sell.
Free of Debt (Unencumbered) epitomises the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale’s value for money. Third in 2019's Gr1 Blue Diamond in his most recent start, and unbeaten prior to that, Free of Debt sold for $30,000, just under the sale’s 2018 average of $36,168. The 2018 sale has also produced stakes-winner Jericho Missile (Smart Missile) who sold for $77,500, and six other 2YO winners so far this season.
Even at double the average price paid, Jericho Missile rates as good value buying when compared to other sales. The Smart Missile gelding has won both his starts and earned $201,500 – a decent return on his purchase price, and less than twelve months after he was sold. No wonder Magic Millions uses the tagline ‘opportunity knocks’ for this sale. The Adelaide sale has a long history of good value top class racehorses, and all it takes is a good judge to find them.
The current season’s 3YOs from the 2017 sale already include five stakes winners, among them Gr1 winner Amphitrite (Sebring). Amphitrite sold for $50,000; just over the 2017 sale average of $33,965. She started her career with a fourth on debut, but quickly raced up the ranks with four wins in succession as a spring 3YO including the Gr1 MRC Thousand Guineas. Her earnings are now over half a million, with more to come.
The 2017 sale’s current 3YOs also include group-winners Tequila Time (Stratum), and The Inevitable (Dundeel), as well as stakes-winner Heaven’s Deal (Spirit of Boom), and Shady Hustle (Hussonet); in addition, another seven horses have already upgraded their pedigrees with stakes-placings and who will likely do more as they mature. Heaven’s Deal sold for $23,000 and was one of the first crop of Spirit of Boom – demonstrating that a good type by an undersung first season sire is happy hunting ground for buyers wanting to take a risk. The Listed-winning filly is now by a boom sire and is surely worth a whole lot more as a broodmare (not to mention her $152,000 in prizemoney earnings).
Dual Gr1 winner Viddora sold for double the average price at $50,000 but has earnings of over $2.7 million, and as a broodmare prospect by I Am Invincible, is worth nothing short of serious 7 figures.
The Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale is a sale for the astute buyer who can see past the pedigree page to the athlete in front of them. History proves that this sale produces many good horses. As Magic Millions says ‘opportunity knocks.’ It can for you too.
