Von Costa de Hero Overview

Gr2 2YO winner Von Costa de Hero gained his first stakes-winner when Lord Von Costa won the Listed AR Creswick Series Final Stakes at Flemington two seasons ago. Among his 99 versatile winners to date of 334 races and over $8 million (65% w/r from 6 crops), Von Costa de Hero has also left dual stakes winner Lord Von Costa, stakes-winning 11-time winner Von Costa Glass, stakes-placed Sea Spray and Brimarvi Vehero and Jurasound who ran fourth in the Gr1 SAJC Schweppes Oaks. Lady Selkirk is a multiple city winner of 5 races, Big Red Costa has picked up multiple Listed fourth placings to go with his 3 wins, and in WA, Zefiro now has 7 wins.

Von Costa de Hero was a punter’s nightmare – a horse with loads of ability who always seemed to run into bad luck. He was Gr1 placed three times, in three of Australia’s highest rated races; second to Sebring in the Gr1 Golden Slipper, second to Heart of Dreams in the Gr1 Australian Guineas and third to Whobegotyou in the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas. All up his only victory was in the Gr2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, yet he won over $1 million. 

Part of the hype around Von Costa de Hero as a racehorse was down to his exemplary pedigree. By Champion Sire Encosta de Lago, from Gr1 winner Piavonic, whose nine wins included the Gr1 Manikato Stakes. Encosta de Lago has crossed well with this family, leaving dual Gr3 winner Emlozza and Von Costa de Hero’s full-brother stakes-placed Taarish.

The now retired dual Australian Champion Sire Encosta de Lago’s progeny include Chautauqua and of course the sorely missed ill-fated Northern Meteor, who is a major sire of sires, particularly through the deeds of Zoustar.
