SKILLED (AUS)(Commands-Dextrous, by Quest For Fame)
Riverbank Farm, VIC. Fee: $3,300

Skilled Overview

Skilled was a boom 2YO – winner of the Gr1 Champagne Stakes, the Listed TL Baillieu, and second in the Gr1 AJC Sires’ Produce – who carried his form through as a 3YO where he raced solely in stakes company. Skilled ran second in the Gr1 Randwick Guineas to Ilovethiscity, and picked up several other stakes placing during that season also.

Skilled is one of eleven Gr1 winners for his sire Commands, whose total stud record numbers 77 stakes winners. Commands took a while to make his mark at stud, living in the shadow of his Gr1 winning brother Danewin, but once he hit his straps, his stock proved to be tough, fast types who thrilled racegoers.

The first crop of Skilled is nearing the end of their 4YO season, and to date he has produced 30 winners including dual Gr3 winner Pecans plus several city winners in the current season. These include So Skilled, Miss Jane, Little Elsa, and the 2YO winner Cayman Dayze. Another who shows promise is Altered, who ran fourth in the Listed Macau Lisboa Challenge Final against the older horses.

Skilled is out of group winner Dextrous, who has been brilliant as a broodmare, leaving group winners Skilled, Sidestep, and Ambidexter. This is the family founded by Champion mare Emancipation (dam of group winner and Derby second Royal Pardon, and granddam of Gr1 winners Railings, and Virage de Fortune).

Breeders who want precocity at a reasonable price should seriously consider Skilled.

  • Ellis Excited for Te Akau in New Season

    Tue, 17 Jul 2018

Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis says he is looking forward to the 2018-19 racing season, a season that will see young horseman Jamie Richards take over as head trainer at the Matamata based operation, reports NZ Racing Desk. "There will be a change at the Te Akau helm, however it's not actually a time of real change. Jamie Richards will be the sole Te Akau trainer but together with an outstanding team, it will be 'business as usual' with plenty of exciting goals for the new season," said Ellis. "We have a team of world class horse people - skilled and experienced professionals who contribute so much to Te Akau's success. It's now over 30 years since I established Te Akau Racing and we have a very strong framework of fundamentals in place." Ellis added: "We will have about 50 horses to trial at Te Teko in early August. The horses I am picking to lead the early charge are Mongolianconqueror, Melody Belle, Age of Fire, Avantage and Sword of Osman, but there are plenty of others that we are confident will step up to Group level. The quality of bloodstock that we have in the stable to race in the new season has everyone very excited."

  • Richards Appointed to Te Akau Role

    Thu, 17 May 2018

Experienced and respected horseman Paul Richards will join the Te Akau Racing team, reports NZ Racing Desk. "Te Akau intends to target all the major racing carnivals in Australia as well as New Zealand and Paul will assume the role of travelling foreman," said Te Akau principal, David Ellis. "The calibre of bloodstock that we have in the stable for the new season is formidable and we cannot wait for the season to get underway." Ellis added: "Paul is also very skilled in dealing with young people and, with his many successful years in the saddle, he will also be concentrating on guiding and developing our Te Akau apprentices. This too is an area where he has excelled." Richards' son Jamie is currently training at Te Akau with Stephen Autridge, but will take over as sole head trainer at the beginning of the new season.

  • Champion 2YO Sidestep To Stand In Queensland

    Wed, 2 May 2018

In a coup for Queensland, the State is set to gain Australian Champion 2YO Colt Sidestep (Exceed and Excel-Dextrous, by Quest For Fame). In an historic arrangement with Godolphin Australia, Sidestep will become the highest-rated son of exceptional juvenile stallion Exceed And Excel to stand in Queensland. The dual Group-winning half-brother to Gr1 performers Skilled and Ambidexter was the first colt home when runner-up to Overreach in the 2013 renewal of the Gr1 Golden Slipper (see below). Sun Stud’s decision to consolidate its thoroughbred investments in Victoria will see its currently leased Queensland stud farm re-launched as Telemon Thoroughbreds in June, with principal Dan Fletcher enthusing, “It’s our privilege to offer a horse the calibre of Sidestep. He’d be one of the best 2YOs to stand up here in my time. The other horses that were at a similar level at two include Written Tycoon, General Nediym, Show a Heart and Brave Warrior and they all made a massive impact.” Godolphin Australia Managing Director Vin Cox said, “It’s a really exciting opportunity for all breeders in Queensland. I know the quality of the farm where he’ll be standing from my time in Queensland so that was a huge attraction.” Meanwhile Darley’s stallion Head of Sales, Alastair Pulford noted, “Those of us familiar with the horse know he’s a fantastic type. He’s very correct, has great scope as well as width, and looks exactly what he is: an elite, precocious athlete.” Telemon and Godolphin have committed to make Sidestep, currently a reverse shuttler in Europe, available to Queensland breeders for a minimum of the next two seasons, with breeders supporting him in 2018 guaranteed they can access the horse in 2019 without paying an increase to his current season fee of $7,700.

  • Pecans Wins Gr3 Godolphin Crown

    Mon, 30 Apr 2018

    %%20180428_HAW_R6:Godolphin Crown%%

At Hawkesbury north-west of Sydney, Riverbank Agistment's beautifully-bred Gr1-winning stallion Skilled (Commands-Dextrous, by Quest For Fame) added a Group race success when 4YO Australian-bred mare Pecans (Skilled-Walnut, by Procol Harum) resumed from more than 8 months off the scene with a strong win in the $175,000 Gr3 Godolphin Crown (1300m) for 3YO+ fillies & mares, defeating the fast-finishing Godolphin mare Ghisoni & Invincibella. Pecans, who was sold by Godolphin to Tricolours Syndications for $50,000 at the 2017 Inglis Melbourne August Bloodstock Sale, improved her record to 5 wins and 5 placings from 13 starts for $285,515 in earnings.

  • Government Visa Announcement Boosts Breeding Sector

    Wed, 17 Jan 2018

The Federal Government's announcement regarding enhanced access to 'Horse Breeder' visas was warmly welcomed by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA). The decision follows a lobbying campaign led by TBA to put the 'Horse Breeder' occupation category on the medium and long term strategic skills list (MTSSL) for the purposes of 457 visas. By putting 'Horse Breeder' on the medium and long-term list, visa holders can work in Australia for up to four years and also have a path to permanent residency – rather than being required to leave the country after just two years under existing arrangements." Access to skilled staff is one of the biggest issues in the Australian Thoroughbred breeding industry and that is why TBA has been closely engaged with the government and Members of Parliament to bring about this key decision," TBA CEO Tom Reilly said. "TBA would like to thank Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, Agriculture Minister David Littleproud, their advisers and other Members of Parliament who greatly assisted our industry on this issue." Reilly said TBA undertook significant work, including with other industry stakeholders, to see this decision come to fruition.

  • First SW For Skilled In Gr3 Belle Of The Turf

    Tue, 2 Jan 2018

%%20171228_GOS_R6:Gosford Rsl Belle Of The Turf%%

Riverbank Agistment's beautifully-bred and performed stallion Skilled (Commands-Dextrous, by Quest For Fame) sired his first stakes-winner last Thursday at Gosford, north of Sydney, when 4YO mare Pecans (Skilled-Walnut, by Procol Harum) scored by 0.2-lengths for trainer Joe Pride in the $148,000 Gr3 Belle of the Turf (1600m). Runner-up was 4YO mare Sedanzer (Sebring-Voltdanze, by Danzero) ahead of 5YO mare Positive Problems (Sebring-Dream'n'Believe, by Shamardal). The victory took Pecans' promising record to 4 wins and 5 second placings from just 14 starts for $185,765 earnings. Her Gr1 Champagne Stakes-winning sire Skilled, also runner-up in the Gr1 Sires Produce Stakes in Sydney, is one of three top-class siblings out of multiple group-winner Dextrous. The others include Australian Champion 2YO Colt and Gr1 Golden Slipper runner-up Sidestep (standing at Darley), as well as Gr1-placed Gr2 winner Ambidexter. Skilled stood the 2017 season at a bargain fee of $3,300.

  • Staff Shortage a Serious Handicap for Industry

    Mon, 27 Nov 2017

Thoroughbred industry leader John Messara has issued a warning about the critical shortage of skilled equine staff on farms and in racing stables. The former Chairman of Racing Australia and Racing NSW said: “The NSW industry has made outstanding progress in the past few years. However, further progress and growth will be seriously limited if we cannot attract more young people to industry training and long-term careers working with thoroughbreds at all stages of their life-cycle.” Messara believes the solution will be found only if the industry and the Federal Government work together. “Right now…our current visa protocols stop us from taking on well-trained overseas staff who want to work here from established equine centres such as Ireland, the UK and France,” he said. The Working Holiday Visa limits the time young people can stay in Australia with an employer and the 457 Visa in many instances is not a workable proposition for young people finding their way into the industry. Racing Australia is lobbying appropriate Federal Government agencies on this matter. Mr Messara concluded: “At some stage, without urgent Federal Government action, some employers will reach the point of winding up their businesses and leaving the industry because of this problem. So we’ll lose their investment, expertise and energy, and ultimately that will impact on all the businesses and communities, often in rural areas in the case of horse studs, that depend on thoroughbred horses being bred, sold and raced.”

  • Specialist Agistment Farms In Demand

    Fri, 19 Jun 2015

With Australia's bloodstock sector currently enjoying a boom period, ancillary industry services are in concomitant demand. These include agistment and spelling properties that specialise as seasonal or permanent homes for broodmares, offering walk-on, walk-off services to stallions at surrounding stud farms, and sometimes beyond. Often referred to collectively as boutique farms, these highly skilled establishments have assumed an important support role during the breeding season. Most of them are also well known as yearling vendors, as well as offering general spelling, sales preparation, weaning services and, sometimes, breaking-in and pre-training. As of this morning, Breeding&Racing's latest industry feature, highlighting the spelling and agistment sector, is now online. Including a general overview, it also puts the spotlight on the below select properties (with their State location in parenthesis) for breeders considering their options in the lead up to the breeding season. To access the feature, either CLICK HERE or on the Industry Features tab in the menu bar at the top of this page. Individual farm profiles can be accessed from within the full feature, by clicking their names at the top left of the Industry Feature page.

  • Majmu Faces Biggest Test

    Fri, 5 Dec 2014

In South Africa, big race jockeys Anthony Delpech and Bernard Fayd'Herbe have expressed their excitement ahead of tomorrow's Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas at Kenilworth where the rising star of South Africa's fillies ranks, Majmu, will clash with top Western Cape filly Cold As Ice, reports goldcircle.co.za. The clash matches any duel the race has seen in its long history and is as eagerly anticipated as the one between the Mike De Kock-trained Igugu and the Justin Snaith-trained Ebony Flyer in 2010. The vanquished Igugu went on to become a champion by winning the Triple Tiara and then completing the Durban July-J&B Met double, all under the skilled hands of Delpech. Delpech was reluctant to compare Majmu to Igugu, but said the former certainly possessed similar potential. "Igugu won so many Gr1s and Majmu is just starting out, so it would not be fair to compare them yet. But she is obviously very good and I'm really excited as it is only now that we are taking on the better horses and we will see how good she is." The Australian-bred grey daughter of Redoute's Choice possesses a devastating finishing sprint, but in her two runs this season has appeared to take a while to get going. "She does unwind, although it depends how the race is run. Last time I dropped her out because of her wide draw, but she is a simple straight forward filly to ride," said Delpech. While Majmu will no doubt go to post as favourite, the Joey Ramsden-trained Cold As Ice (Western Winter) is expected to give a good account of herself after winning her last three starts in effortless fashion. "Cold as Ice is fit and doing really well, we are very happy, and her last gallop went really well," said Fayd'Herbe. "We have obviously heard a lot about Majmu and seen her, so know how good she is, but I am excited about Saturday's race."

  • Pennsylvania Racing Regulators Facing Insolvency

    Fri, 29 Nov 2013

The two state commissions that regulate horse racing in Pennsylvania are on the brink of insolvency, officials said Wednesday, and two top state senators are calling for the commissions to be dissolved and the regulatory responsibilities shifted to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, reports sfgate.com. The committee's executive director, Michael Rader, said commissions that regulate harness racing and thoroughbred racing are expected to run out of money well before the fiscal year ends in June. Major factors include rising personnel costs and the expansion of Internet and off-track betting that is exempt from the pari-mutuel tax that finances the commissions, Rader said. "Technology has just made it a lot easier for folks to make wagers without having a physical presence at the track," he said. By law, the horse racing industry receives more than $200 million a year from slot machine gambling revenue to fatten purses, assist breeding operations and provide health and pension benefits for horsemen. A bill has been drafted that would shift responsibility for drug testing of horses and other regulatory activities to the gaming board, which licenses and regulates Pennsylvania's gambling casinos. Republican Leader of the Pennsylvania State Senate, Dominic Pileggi said: "Pennsylvania has a large, well-staffed and highly skilled Gaming Control Board which already regulates hundreds of millions of dollars, perhaps billions of dollars, worth of gaming activity in the state. It's entirely appropriate for them to take over the role of regulating…thoroughbred racing in the state as part of their duties."
