Stradbroke Handicap Final Field & Barriers

The final field has been declared and the barrier draw conducted for the showpiece event of the Queensland winter carnival - the $1.5 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The TAB favourite for the race is the Gr1 winning mare Azkadellia at $4, ahead of Gr1 Goodwood winner Black Heart Bart ($6), Counterattack ($7), and Gr1 BTC Cup winner Malaguerra and Gr1 Doomben 10,000 winner Music Magnate who are both at $9. Next best is Team Hawkes' enigmatic but highly talented galloper Kaepernick at $11. The final field is:

At Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, Widden Stud's dual stakes-winning stallion Snippetson (Snippets-Snowdrift, by Polish Precedent) added a Group success when 5YO gelding Snippets Land (Snippetson-Seduction Line, by Testa Rossa) scored a fast finishing 0.2-length win for trainers Peter & Paul Snowden in the $125,000 Gr3 BRC Sprint (1350m) for 3YO+, over fellow 5YO geldings Religify (Choisir-Sacred Witness, by El Moxie) & Artlee (Excellent Art-Danelee Dancer-by Danehill Dancer). Snippets Land, who was a $120,000 purchase by Steve Brem at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Raheen Stud, took his record to 6 wins (including the Listed Canberra National Sprint) and 6 placings (including the Listed GCTC Prime Minister's Cup) from 21 starts for $342,040 earnings.

Canberra sprinter Fell Swoop (barrier 10) is the current TAB favourite for the race at $3.80, ahead of Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Japonisme (3) at $4.20 and talented country galloper Artlee (4) at $8.50. At Doomben in Queensland, Arrowfield Stud's multiple stakes-winning stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice-Single's Bar, by Rory's Jester) added a Group success when 4YO gelding Fell Swoop (Not a Single Doubt-Touched in Flight, by Fasliyev) scored by 0.4-length for trainer Matthew Dale in the $200,000 Gr2 Victory Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, over 7YO gelding Didntcostalot (Danerich-Costi, by Encosta de Lago) & 5YO gelding Artlee (Excellent Art-Danelee Dancer, by Danehill Dancer). Fell Swoop, who was coming off a second placing behind Chautauqua in the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes, took his record to 9 wins (including the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes & Listed Cup Club Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes & Gr1 Oakleigh Plate) from 14 starts for $1,051,170 earnings. Fell Swoop was purchased by Dale for $45,000 at the 2013 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the draft of Dartbrook Downs. "We're rapt with his performance," trainer Matthew Dale told Sky Racing. "He is a winner, he's an absolute competitor. The best is ahead of him. This trip to Brisbane will really season him and we see the best of him in the future." Fell Swoop is expected to run in the Gr1 BTC Cup and the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 before his primary winter target, the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Eagle Farm on 11 June.

At Scone in the NSW Hunter Valley, former Gr1-winning & 4-times Gr1-placed shuttler & champion 3YO miler Excellent Art (Pivotal-Obsessive, by Seeking The Gold) added a black-type success when 4YO gelding Artlee (Excellent Art-Danelee Dancer, by Danehill Dancer) scored by 1-length for trainer Todd Willan in the $140,000 Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) for 3YO+, over fellow 4YO gelding Oxford Poet (Dylan Thomas-Oxford Princess, by Magic Ring) & 5YO mare Slots (Casino Prince-Serein, by Snippets). This was the first stakes victory for Artlee who was coming off an impressive victory in the Country Championship Final at Randwick in early April. Artlee took his record to 6 wins and 1 placing from 9 starts for $390,545 earnings. "I am still shaking and I am a bit weak at the knees, but it is very exciting," a delighted Todd Willan said. "He is just a good honest horse and next prep we will find a nice race for him I think."
