  • NEW Weekend Black Type Schedule

    Thursday, 28th March 2024

Three months into a new work year, the Easter long weekend provides a nice breather for most people, however, for many of our industry participants, the show has to go on across a number of categories. Whilst the racing side is obvious – there are four Group 1s headlining 17 stakes races – it’s equally challenging for the Inglis Easter vendors and their tireless staff as yearling prep continues ahead of the early April Sale. To that end, from Tuesday to Thursday, we’ll be publishing yearling previews, alphabetically, for a large cohort of Premium Black Type Vendors that have exciting consignments for the two day sale. Back to the races where, if she is anywhere as good as her kiwi fans believe, Savabeel filly Orchestral could be a 3YO filly in a decade, which is saying something given the amazing quality that abounds.  Saturday’s Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes will provide further evidence of just how true that might be. Whilst every effort is made to ensure race times (in AEDT) are accurate, please consult official race cards if certainty is required.

  • NEW Coolmore Half Dozen Tops Inglis March (Late)

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Following the conclusion of Inglis Digital’s March (Late) Sale, Coolmore Stud emerged as the leading vendor by price, with the top six all from the Hunter Valley farm. Top lot was Piccadillies (Uncle Mo), a half sister to champion sire Fastnet Rock offered in foal to St Mark’s Basilica, which sold to Irish-based Marlhill House Stud for $300,000. Speaking on behalf of the Marlhill team, Coolmore’s John Kennedy said: “Piccadillies’ family is very well known and very dear to the hearts of Eddie and Eimear Irwin of Marlhill House, given they’re partners in Fastnet Rock. They’re also very fond of St Mark’s Basilica, having a weanling half sister to Storm Boy by the stallion so they’re delighted to be able to acquire a mare in foal to him via Inglis Digital today.’’ Meanwhile, Asian Bloodstock’s well-known Marie Yoshida bought a feature lot while on a flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles. Yoshida had done her pre-sale research and veterinary checks ahead of today’s final countdown of bidding but knew that when lot 41 Armed Forces (I Am Invincible) came to be bid on, she would be perched at 40,000 feet. “It was so cool. I had my mobile phone on the flight Wi-Fi, then I had my iPad on the Wi-Fi as well and I also had someone on the ground I was talking to in real time on WhatsApp helping as back up in case the Wi-Fi was interrupted for whatever reason,’’ stated Yoshida, who paid $275,000 for Armed Forces. She confirmed Armed Forces, purchased for a new Hong Kong client, would head to Hong Kong to continue his racing career. “The HKJC Handicapper gave him a minimum PP Rating of 63, he’s a 3YO gelding, he’s ready to go, it was a no brainer for us.”
  • NEW March (Late Sale) Grosses Just Under $4 million

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
The Inglis March (Late) Sale saw nine horses realise $100,000 or more – Piccadillies, Armed Forces, I Say Hello ($225,000), Montoya’s Secret ($195,000), Okita Soushi ($185,000), Northern Eyes ($155,000), Introducing ($130,000), Cattrall ($125,000) and Dyslexic ($125,000). One of the more intriguing entries was Okita Soushi, a Royal Ascot winner last year who then came to Australia and raced behind Without A Fight in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. His new owner, Alana Maree, revealed, “I spent $50,000 more than I thought I was going to have to but I still think he’s a good buy and I’m thrilled to have got him. I haven’t decided on a trainer yet, the plan is to try and replicate what he did in 2023 and target the Cups again.” She reasoned, “He was pretty fresh last year but now that he’s been here in the country for more than six months, he would have acclimatised a lot more.’’ Okita Soushi is by champion sire Galileo out of Caufield’s Gr1 Thousand Guineas heroine Amicus. In total the Inglis Digital March (Late) Sale grossed $3,969,150. Entries are now open for the April (Early) Sale and will remain open until midnight next Wednesday, April 3. The sale will run from April 5-10. All vendors are advised to take note that the intention, at this stage, is to cap the number of entries at no more than 540 for the Inglis Digital April (Late) Sale, traditionally one of the largest catalogues of the year.

  • Class To Rise in Intriguing Australian Cup

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Having raced over 2000m and beyond just three times in his career with his best being a narrow second in the Gr1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) behind Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) last year, the Ben, JD & Will Hayes-trained Mr Brightside (Bullbars-Lilahjay, by Tavistock) looks right on track to record his seventh elite level score when he starts favourite in Saturday's $3m Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m). Finishing a length behind Mr Brightside in the All-Star Mile last start, Godolphin's Cascadian (New Approach-Falls of Lora, by Street Cry) is following the same path as last year which saw him win the Gr1 Australian Cup off a second in the All-Star Mile. While both Mr Brightside and Cascadian were beaten by Pride Of Jenni (Pride of Dubai-Sancerre, by O'Reilly) in the All-Star Mile this year, the highly talented mare failed at her only attempt at 2000m in the past. That said, she was not in the vein of form she is currently in and she may just roll along and prove too hard to run down once again. Both Group 1 winners over 2000m, the New Zealand-bred mares Legarto (Proisir-Geordie Girl, by Towkay) and Atishu (Savabeel-Posy, by No Excuse Needed) can't be discounted at all in the small nine-horse field and it would be no surprise should either take home the trophy in a highly intriguing affair.

  • Alaskan Eyes Redemption in Melvista Stakes

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Two starts back in a graduation handicap (1800m) Alaskan finished ahead of just one runner, but on a day that heavily favoured on pace runners the back markers were up against it, reports rwwa.com.au. Last fortnight in the J.C.Roberts Stakes (1800m) Alaskan finished a length second to Lord Vampi which earned high praise from Parnham after he endured a difficult run. Trapped wide for much of the race, Alaskan (Playing God-Lady Alaska, by Reset) would have been entitled to fade back in the field, but the 3YO kept plugging away and never shirked the issue. Parnham says if Alaskan can find that elusive luck and get a better go of it on Friday in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m), he is a top winning chance. "I thought he was pretty good up against a horse like that after doing all that work. It didn't flatten him at all, if anything I would have said he's getting better. He's just thriving the horse and has come good in the coat," Parnham said, in relation to the Roberts run. Alaskan will be ridden by Chris Parnham and in a field of 14 Melvista Stakes acceptors, and drawn barrier eight, Alaskan holds $4.60 favouritism ahead of Lord Vampi at $4.80.
  • Magic Millions to Auction Extremely Rare Filly

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Platinum Jubilee, arguably Australia's best bred 3YO filly, will attract global bloodstock attention when she goes under the hammer at May's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast. A Group winning juvenile and a half sister to two racetrack stars including Saturday's Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Lady of Camelot, Platinum Jubilee will be presented as an elite racing and breeding prospect as part of the Newgate Consignment. Platinum Jubilee, a daughter of star Widden Stud sire Zoustar, won the Gr3 Gimcrack Stakes during a juvenile season that also included runner-up efforts in the $2 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic and the Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes. In the Silver Slipper she finished just a half length from Godolphin's winner Cylinder - who earlier this month won the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington. "Gai and I trained Platinum Jubilee's mother Miss Debutante, and she was blessed with exceptional talent," co-trainer Adrian Bott said. "We were therefore keen to secure her first foal offered at public auction, Platinum Jubilee. She looked the part and delivered as one of the very best two-year-old fillies of her generation, just like Lady of Camelot and Queen of the Ball. Bott pondered, “One wonders what this pedigree might look like in ten years time knowing the opportunities they will receive when they go to stud. Platinum Jubilee looks like the only access point to all the upside in the foreseeable future.” Her dam, the stakes-winning Fastnet Rock mare Miss Debutante, is emerging as one of the world's great young blue hens. Her first three named foals, all by different sires, are Group winners. As well as this season's juvenile sensation Lady of Camelot and the sale bound Platinum Jubilee, Miss Debutante is also the dam of the four-time Group winner and $732,000 earner Queen of the Ball who contested the Gr1 William Reid Stakes last Saturday. "Platinum Jubilee was a beautiful yearling and her physique, along with her terrific 2YO form and incredible dam, have to make her one of the most commercial fillies offered off the track in recent years," Newgate's Henry Field noted. "History will tell you Platinum Jubilee has a high probability of leaving sale topping yearlings and stakes winners in her own right," Field added. Platinum Jubilee and the recently announced multiple Group 1 winner Atishu will be among the headline acts of a star studded National Broodmare Sale which commences on May 28.

  • Teofilo Gelding Gives Positive Tancred Impression

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
While it's not the norm for European horses to back up within seven days, last Saturday's N E Manion Cup (2400m) winner Post Impressionist (Teofilo-Island Remede, by Medicean) has accepted in this Saturday's Gr1 Tancred Stakes (2400m). Scoring by more than three lengths last start, where he was highly rated after coming from almost last on the turn, it was surprisingly the first time the William Haggas-trained 5YO has even contested a Black Type race, further highlighting the lack of depth in our staying ranks. While he may not appreciate the back-up, connections would find it hard to turn down the opportunity to secure a share of the $1.5m in prizemoney on offer. Third last Saturday in the Gr1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) behind the Yulong-owned pair of Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Place Du Carrousel (Lope de Vega), C J Waller's Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock-Roheryn, by Galileo) will be stepping up to the 2400m for the first time in his 15 start career but with his dam winning up to 2400m and his half-brother winning over 2800m, one would suspect the trip won't be an issues. With three wins over 2500m as well as a fourth in the Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), the Ciaron Maher trained Ashrun (Authorized-Ashantee, by Areion) comes into the race off a last start win in the Listed Pakenham Cup (2500m) and although he needs to step up in class come Saturday, it is hard to fault his form.
  • Molly Bloom Heads Straight to Winter Carnival

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Group 1-winning Molly Bloom (Ace High-Dancilla, by Iffraaj) was set to tackle this Saturday's Gr1 NZEA New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie but will now head straight to Queensland for a three-race campaign, reports loveracing.nz. While another Group 1 victory in her homeland would have been a great addition to her pedigree page – she was set to run on Saturday – her connections felt focusing on the Queensland Winter Carnival was the best option. "We are hoping to trial her on the ninth of April…we may even look to trial her again through May with the idea of running her on the 11th of May in the Bracelet (Listed, 1800m) on the Gold Coast. There is The Roses (Gr2, 2100m) and the Oaks (Gr1, 2200m) as well, providing her form continues to improve," said Andrew Scott, who trains the filly in partnership with Lance O'Sullivan. It will be a farewell tour of sorts for Wexford Stables and their gun filly, who is set to remain in Australia in the care of another trainer following her campaign. Scott added, "It will be exciting for the team to have a good chance like her. She is a staying 3YO filly and we think she is up to the grade."

  • Tulloch Stakes Within Grasp of Progressive Wymark

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Possibly used as a stepping stone to next Saturday's Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m), the Gr2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) will be the first stakes contest for the Michael Freedman-trained Wymark (Savabeel-Pasadena, by O'Reilly) who comes into the race off the back of three solid wins, most recently by two and three-quarter lengths over 1900m at Rosehill. Purchased for $200,000 from the Magic Millions draft of Sledmere Stud, who retain ownership in their graduate, Wymark has been allocated barrier 10 in the 14 (plus three emergency) field, with Tommy Berry in the saddle. The Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes, won recently by Godolphin's Zardozi (Kingman), appears to be a strong form line for Saturday's race with third placed Kintyre (Hallowed Crown-Mull Over, by So You Think) producing a solid effort to suggest he should run well over the 2000m. While he has always just been off that top echelon of his age group, by no means is Saturday's race brimming with top quality 3YOs, and the Gary Portelli-trained gelding has a solid showing. Noted working home very well late to take fifth in the Phar Lap Stakes was the 100/1 chance Noisy Boy (Real Steel-Northern Model, by Northern Meteor) for Muswellbrook trained Todd Howlett and a repeat of that effort should see the Arrowfield Stud-bred gelding relish the 2000m. Group 1 placed at 2, the C J Waller-trained Tannhauser (Dundeel-Luqyaa, by Exceed And Excel) was slowing warming up late to finish sixth in the Phar Lap, and while he may need another run to show his best, he could be one to watch from the standpoint of the Derby.
  • Slipper Form the Key to Baillieu Success

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
With a large field of 13 juveniles accepting for Saturday's $250,000 Gr3 Baillieu (1400m), a selection of the runners are coming into the race after competing against many of those who raced in last weekend's Gr1 Golden Slipper. Second in the Gr3 Pago Pago Stakes last time out behind Dublin Down (Exceedance), the G Waterhouse & A Bott-trained Anode (I Am Invincible-Mysterious Light, by Fantastic Light), the third placed colt in that race was the Matt Laurie-trained Coleman (Pierata), who backed that up with a narrow second in the Slipper behind Anode's stablemate Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon). From the extended family of Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, if the Adam Hyeronimus-ridden colt can overcome barrier 10 and take the win, he has stallion appeal from a pedigree aspect. Although beaten five lengths last time out in the Gr2 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes behind Godolphin's Traffic Warden (Street Boss), who came out and finished fourth in last weekend's Slipper, the Michael Moroney-trained Peru (Brazen Beau-Salamati, by Dubawi) was noted working home very well, and while he may be better suited over the 1600m of the Gr1 Champagne Stakes, the $180,000 Inglis Premier graduate should be watched late. While likely to improve over further, one at outsider odds who could run well here is the Gary Portelli-trained Flying Argento (D'argento-Misstiflying, by Flying Spur). From the first crop of his Gr1 Rosehill Guineas-winning sire, the Leneva Park bred gelding was noted working home extremely well in a recent trial to finishing second.

  • Makarena Targeting First Black Type Victory

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Only won by two 3YOs in the last 20 years – Sworn To Secrecy (Keeper) in 2011 and Hot Danish (Nothin' Leica Dane) in 2007 – the talented Hawkes Racing-trained Makarena (Snitzel-Wecansay Mak, by Starcraft) looks very capable of adding the race to her record. Ending her Spring campaign with victory in the $500,000 Tapp-Craig, the filly resumed with a second to Caballus (I Am Invincible) in the Gr3 Eskimo Prince, followed by fifth in the Gr1 Surround Stakes behind Tropical Squall (Prized Icon) before a last start second in the Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes behind Gr1 winner Zardozi (Kingman). From barrier 1, the $250,000 Arrowfield Stud Inglis Easter yearling graduate will be ridden by Tim Clark who has been on her back in all starts this campaign. Champion trainer C J Waller will saddle up four runners and all appear to have chances headed by last start Gr1 Coolmore Classic fifth placed Hinged (Worthy Cause-Tints, by Tycoon Ruler), who the start prior to that was nudged out in a photo finish by the Annabel Neasham trained Hell Hath No Fury (Hellbent-Diamond Cove, by Octagonal) who lines up here off the back of a disappointing effort in the Coolmore Classic. An elite winner in her own right, winning the Surround Stakes at 3, Hinged is rarely out of Group 1 company, and should acquit herself extremely well here. Fourth last Saturday in the Gr3 Birthday Card Stakes behind Chain of Lightning (Fighting Sun), the Waller-trained Olentia (Zoustar-Mabkhara, by Anabaa) was disappointing on face value considering she started favourite where she tracked the eventual winner and died on her run, and now needs to step up a further 300m – but who are we to question the Champion trainer.
  • Orchestral On Song Ahead of Vinery Stud

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Having been compared to other high-quality New Zealand fillies such as Silent Achiever (O'Reilly) and last year's winner Prowess (Proisir), the Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained Orchestral (Savabeel-Symphonic, by O'Reilly) looks short odds to record her first Australian Gr1 victory come Saturday in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), off the back of beating the boys in the Gr1 New Zealand Derby last time by just shy of four lengths. The form has already somewhat proven itself with the Derby second placegetter Antrim Coast (Roc de Cambes) winning the Gr2 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley last Saturday where he defeated NZ Gr1 Levin Classic winner Quintessa (Shamus Award). A winner of five from eight, her last four in succession, Orchestral will have the services of James McDonald on Saturday with the pair drawn barrier 2 in the 10-horse field. One of just two Gr1 winners in the race, Orchestral will tackle Godolphin's impressive last start Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes winner Zardozi (Kingman-Chanderi, by Dubawi). Arguably Australia's premier 3YO staying filly after her victory in the Gr1 VRC Oaks (2500m) during the spring, the James Cummings-trained filly hits 2000m third up from a spell and will have the services of Tom Marquand who has ridden her at her last two starts. While her close-up pedigree may not suggest she can run a strong 2000m, trainer Gary Portelli feels that his start filly Kimochi (Brave Smash-Summer Fun, by I Am Invincible) has been wrongly assessed leading into the race. "Zougotcha, what price would she be in a race like that? We've stretched Zougotcha in a Coolmore. She's done nothing wrong, my filly," he told racing.com. Looking at her extended pedigree reveals numerous high quality stakes winners over ground and come Saturday this will surely be tested out ahead of the 3YO selling at the upcoming Chairman's Sale as Lot 4 in the Twin Hills Stud draft.

  • Spirit Dancer Primed Ahead of Sheema Classic

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
World famous football manager Sir Alex Ferguson's 7YO gelding Spirit Dancer (Frankel-Queen's Dream, by Oasis Dream) is ready to the tackle Saturday's Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic. Bred and owned by the former Manchester United head honcho, Spirit Dancer is trained by Richard Fahey. "Everything's going great. Looking at the videos and speaking to the lad out there, I believe he's come on in his coat and his demeanour, he's in very good form," said Fahey. "He did have five weeks to acclimatise from his first run this season to the Neom Turf Cup [in Saudi Arabia] and it's nearly another five weeks again. We're very lucky to be able to have him there because it's more or less the same climate in the Middle East and he's had time to settle into a good routine – he's loving his time there. It's an easier preparation to do it there than from here. It was always in the back of my mind to go to a mile and a half. You'd have every confidence that he should stay. He relaxes and in all his races he's always finished well." Fahey conceded, "We are in at Group 1 level, so it will be a huge ask, but we've had a nice prep and it's always nice coming there off the back of a win. I'm really looking forward to seeing him run." Spirit Dancer has won eight of his 25 starts, racing every season since he was a 2YO, with his best win coming in his most recent start when he won the Gr2 Al-Janadriah Neom Turf Cup.
  • Galaxy Patch Could Face Hong Kong’s Elite

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Prominent trainer Pierre Ng is setting ambitious goals for his promising 4YO thoroughbred Galaxy Patch in the upcoming FWD Champions Day at Sha Tin on April 28. Following an impressive runner-up finish in the HK$26 million BMW Hong Kong Derby (see below), Galaxy Patch is gearing up to compete in either the HK$22 million G1 FWD Champions Mile or the HK$28 million G1 FWD QEII Cup, with the Wandjina gelding holding entries in both high-stake races. Galaxy Patch has emerged as a formidable contender in Hong Kong's racing scene, with four wins in nine starts, including a Group 1 placing in the HK$13 million G1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup. His recent foray into the 2000-meter distance in the Derby showcased his potential, defying expectations and validating the confidence placed in him by his jockey, Blake Shinn. Golden Sixty and Romantic Warrior, each pursuing their own respective streaks in the Champions Mile and QEII Cup, are the noteworthy opponents Galaxy Patch may face. Ng believes that the colt has the versatility to handle distances up to a mile or more, with the final decision on his Champions Day race pending how well he recovers from his recent efforts.

  • One Final Kiwi Order by Sold Sergeant Major

    Thursday, 28th March 2024
Gavin Sharrock is confident his young protégé Sergeant Major can sign off his New Zealand career in perfect style. The Stratford trainer’s well-related 2YO son of champion sire Proisir will take aim at the Gr1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Trentham on Saturday week, according to racingnews.co.nz. “He has been sold, but the new owner Ozzie Kheir wants me to carry on with him until after the Sires’ and then he’ll go to either Chris Waller or Ciaron Maher,” Sharrock said. Sergeant Major ran second on debut at Otaki behind Final Force, who had previously placed in the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), before he impressively went one better at Trentham to attract Kheir’s attention. His maiden success was all the more meritorious as he had reared at the start and hung throughout before unleashing a powerful finishing burst wide out on the track. “He had never run crooked in his life and then I saw the replay and he got his tongue over the bit so he (Sam Weatherley, jockey) wouldn’t have been able to steer him,” Sharrock said. “That’s probably why he went up when he jumped, the bit’s hit him under the tongue.” Sharrock stated, “He is a freak and he’s from a staying family and he will be far better at 1400m than 1200m.” Sergeant Major was bred and raced by Gavin O’Dea, with the seven-figure deal brokered by bloodstock agent Melissa Robinson. Hawera accountant O’Dea has enjoyed a successful association with Sharrock through Sergeant Major’s multiple stakes winning brother Soldier Boy and their sister Vancooga, runner-up in the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m). Another sister is currently being broken in and the mare is in foal to Vanbrugh while Vancooga has a yearling filly by Vadamos.
