It's It secured his first stakes victory and caused a minor upset when narrowly defeating favourite First Among Equals, who had to lump a huge 61kg in the sprint feature. "He likes Belmont and has won four races there," trainer Sharon Miller said. "He'll now start in the Bolton Sprint and Belmont Newmarket." The Listed HG Bolton Sprint (1200m) will be run at Belmont on 29 July, with the Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m) scheduled two weeks later.

Top WA sprinter First Among Equals (Exceed and Excel-Pride of the Class, by Volksraad) will be asked to shoulder more than 60kg when he resumes in the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) at Belmont on Saturday, reports the West Australian. With a rating of 104, the multiple stakes winner is expected to receive close to 62kg for the feature. The 5YO has been off the scene since sustaining a cut to his leg when 12th behind fellow WA speedster Vega Magic in the Gr1 Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville in May. "It will be interesting to see how he goes with the weight," trainer Simon Miller said. "We left him in Adelaide for a couple of weeks after the Goodwood." Miller added: "When he came home, the owner (Brett Fogarty) rang and told me he was doing so well, he was going to hurt himself in his paddock. He only had the two runs in May. He'll have two runs and then go back out again."

Ascot trainer Simon Miller is confident that Melbourne jockey Luke Nolen will give top WA sprinter First Among Equals every chance when he makes his eastern states debut in Saturday's Gr1 Goodwood at Morphettville, reports the West Australian. A four-time stakes winner in his home state of West Australia, First Among Equals (Exceed and Excel-Pride of the Class, by Volksraad) is rated a $26 chance with TAB for the $1 million sprint feature. "I got to know Luke when I was working for Robert Smerdon and Robbie Griffiths in Melbourne," Miller said. "The horse travelled over well and will be topped off on Tuesday morning." Former WA galloper and now bone fide Gr1 star Black Heart Bart is the $3.20 favourite for the Goodwood.

The final field has been declared and the barrier draw conducted for the $1 million Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) to be run at Ascot in Perth, West Australia this Saturday. Malaguerra tightened his grip on favouritism for the $1 million sprint feature after drawing the inside gate at Tuesday afternoon's barrier draw. The Peter Gelagotis-trained 5YO, who is seeking his third Gr1 win after victories in the Manikato Stakes & BTC Cup, is currently $3.20 with TAB ahead of Terravista at $3.40, and Takedown at $8. Local hope Rock Magic is next best at $9 with rising WA star State Solicitor rated a $10 chance. Julian Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of Perth Racing, said the quality of horses entered in this year's Winterbottom was a reflection of the race's high standing in Australia's sprint ranks.
