At Moonee Valley in Victoria, French 2000 Guineas & French Derby-winning shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal-Lady Vettori, by Vettori) added a Group race success when 4YO mare Spanish Reef (Lope De Vega-Lemon Reef, by Lemon Drop Kid) scored by 2.8-lengths for trainer Ken Keys in the $200,000 Gr2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) for 3YO+ fillies and mares, defeating fellow 4YO mares Samovare & Flying Jess. Continuing her rivalry with Samovare who she defeated by less than a length two weeks ago in the Gr3 Scwheppervescence Trophy (1600m) at Flemington, this time the result was unequivocal for the favourite. Jumping well from her outside stall to camp just off Tasmanian mare Life On The Wire, Spanish Reef never looked like getting beaten at any stage and was eased down by Mark Zahra with 25m to run. A $12,500 bargain buy at the 2014 Magic Millions Patinack Farm Dispersal Sale, consistent Spanish Reef took her record to 5 wins and 5 placings from 13 starts for $420,200 earnings. Having now well and truly got the figurative stakes race monkey off her back with a Group race double, Spanish Reef's connections will be dreaming of bigger prizes ahead. Included in those is next month's Gr1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes run during The Championships. Suggesting she'll be tipped out after her Sydney sojourn, Keys revealed, "I want to keep [her] at a mile for the time being but when she gets out to 2000 metres and even a mile and a half I think you'll find she's even better."
At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Cannarelle, by Canny Lad) added a Group race success when 4YO bay mare I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band) returned to her brilliant best when scoring a front-running win in the $200,000 Gr2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) for 4YO+ mares, defeating Flying Jess & Hell Or Highwater. The well-bred I Am A Star, who became the first filly in history to win the Gr1 Myer Classic last spring, advanced her record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Myer Classic, Gr2 Sunline Stakes, Gr2 Kewney Stakes, Gr3 Quezette Stakes & Gr3 SAJC National Stakes) and 4 placing (including the Gr1 MRC Thousand Guineas, Gr2 Moonee Valley Fillies' Classic & Gr2 Rubiton Stakes) from 19 starts for $1,188,200 in earnings. Originally purchased for NZ$12,000 at the 2014 NZB Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, I Am A Star was subsequently sold for $40,000 to James Harron Bloodstock at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the draft of Broadwater Thoroughbreds (now Bhima).
At Caulfield in Melbourne, Sun Stud's multiple Group-winning and Gr1-placed stallion Love Conquers All (Mossman-She's a Meanie, by Prince Salieri) added a Group success when 4YO mare and Brisbane raider Savanna Amour (Love Conquers All-Savanna la Mar, by Stravinsky) posted the third black-type victory of her career in the $150,750 Gr3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) for 4YO+ mares, defeating home-based 4YO mare Flying Jess & Written Era in a desperately close fanning finish. Savanna Amour, who was knocked down to Ontrack Thoroughbreds for $100,000 at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the draft of Toolooganvale Stud, improved her record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 Angus Armanasco Stakes and Gr3 Gold Coast Guineas) and 2 placings from 10 starts for $418,250 earnings. Savanna Amour is from the family of Gr1 Golden Slipper winner and successful sire Marauding.
Yarraman Park has announced the 2017 fees for its resident champion stallions I Am Invincible and Hinchinbrook. I Am Invincible, sire of dual Gr1 winning sprinter and stallion Brazen Beau, has had an outstanding year both on the track and in the sales ring. With 19 stakes winners to his credit, I Am Invincible is the sire of Australia’s best 3YO filly I Am A Star who recently added the Gr2 Kewney Stakes & Gr2 Sunline Stakes to her impressive CV which is highlighted by her Gr1 Myer Classic victory in the spring. I Am Invincible, currently the country’s leading stallion by winners to runners with a consistent percentage of more than 50%, is also the sire of brilliant Queensland filly and Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Houtzen. He will stand at $110,000 (inc. GST) this spring. Meanwhile, Snitzel’s three-quarter-brother Hinchinbrook has had a brilliant start to 2017 following his remarkable spring where he was one of only four stallions to sire more than one stakes winner at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. He is the sire of Gr1-winning freshman stallion Press Statement, Magic Millions 3YO Guineas winner Flying Jess, classy juvenile Diamond Tathagata, Gr3 winner Spright and Listed winners Flippant and Derryn. Hinchinbrook’s fee has been set at $44,000 (inc. GST).
At the Gold Coast in Queensland, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning & 4-time Gr1-placed stallion Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) added a restricted black-type success when 3YO filly Flying Jess (Hinchinbrook-Maritess, by Magic Albert) scored by 0.3 length at huge odds of $101 for trainer John Moloney in the $2 million Listed (R) Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO fillies Global Glamour (Star Witness-Spectacula, by Testa Rossa) & Eckstein (I Am Invincible-Comrie, by Choisir). The $1.65 favourite and previously unbeaten colt Winning Rupert appeared to fail to run out a strong seven furlongs, fading late to finish fourth. Flying Jess's surprise win improved her record to 2 wins (including the Gr3 SA Sires' Produce Stakes) and 2 placings from 12 starts for $1,296,430 earnings. Hailing from the same family as Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Dinky Flyer (her third dam), Flying Jess was purchased by Prime Thoroughbreds for $60,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Milburn Creek. Trainer John Moloney said Flying Jess would be aimed at races such as the Gr1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in the autumn.

At Morphettville in South Australia, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning & 4-time Gr1-placed stallion Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) added a Group success when 2YO filly Flying Jess (Hinchinbrook-Maritess, by Magic Albert) scored by 0.2-length for trainer John Moloney in the $120,000 Gr3 SA Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) for 2YOs, over fellow 2YO filly Smart Manoeuvre (Smart Missile-Furline, by Tale Of The Cat) & 2YO gelding Morvada (Mossman-Carnegie Minstrel, by Carnegie). Flying Jess, who counts Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Dinky Flyer as her third dam, was purchased by Prime Thoroughbreds for $60,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Milburn Creek.
