Daysee Doom Wins Gr2 Vinery Millie Fox

Monday, 26th February 2018

On a superb day of racing at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, former Darley and now Aquis Farm Gr2-winning stallion Domesday (Red Ransom-In the Past, by Zafonic) added a Group race success when 5YO mare Daysee Doom (Domesday-See a Victory, by Mister C) poked her head through at just the right time to provide trainer Ron Quinton with victory in the $198,000 Gr2 Vinery Stud Millie Fox Stakes (1300m). In a blanket finish, with any of four a chance to win 30m from home, long-time leader Girl Sunday clung on for runner-up just ahead of a flashing Foxplay and Prompt Response who was caught up on the fence. "It's great to win with this mare," said Quinton. "She is very tough. She's a bit mad but she's one tough nut and never knows when she's beaten." Daysee Doom will target the Gr1 Coolmore Classic, along with stable mate Dixie Blossoms who will be seen next in Saturday's Gr2 Guy Walter Stakes. Placed in this race last year, the win took consistent Daysee Moon's record to 8 wins (including the Gr2 Golden Pendant & Gr3 Dark Jewel Classic) and 4 placings (including the Gr2 ATC Millie Fox Stakes, Gr2 ATC Emancipation Stakes & Gr3 Angst Stakes) from 18 starts for $823,575 earnings.

Apollo First-Up for Foxplay

Tuesday, 13th February 2018

Group One winner Foxplay (Foxwedge-Butters, by El Prado) will open her autumn campaign in the Gr2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, reports racenet. Foxplay is taking advantage of the absence of her champion stable-mate Winx, who instead will resume in the Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on 3 March. "I wasn't going to run Foxplay in the Apollo but now that Winx isn't there she will run," trainer Chris Waller said. Foxplay, who has not raced since finishing a close-up fifth (beaten 1.1 lengths) behind Shoals in the Gr1 Myer Classic in the spring, is being aimed at a defence of her title in the Gr1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes during The Championships.

Foxplay Ready for Tristarc

Tuesday, 17th October 2017

Chris Waller says classy mare Foxplay (Foxwedge-Butters, by El Prado) is ready to return to the races in Saturday's Gr2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield. A winner of the Gr1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes (otherwise known as the Gr1 Queen of The Turf Stakes) in the autumn, Foxplay will be lining up for her fourth start this preparation. The 4YO boasts top-class form having placed behind her champion stable-mate Winx in both the Gr2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) & Gr1 George Main Stakes (1600m), and most recently finishing fourth to Happy Clapper in the Gr1 Epsom Handicap. Waller was at Flemington on Saturday morning to watch Foxplay work over 1000 metres in which she covered the last 400m in 26.09 seconds. "She's come out of her last start fourth in the Epsom in really good order," Waller told racenet. "The race on Saturday looks ideal for her heading towards the Myer Classic [Gr1] here at Flemington on November 4." The Tristarc will be Foxplay's second start in Melbourne having finished fourth in the Gr1 Thousand Guineas as a 3YO.

Winx Wins Gr1 George Main Stakes

Monday, 18th September 2017

At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Darley's deceased shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) celebrated an elite race success when champion 6YO mare Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) stormed home for yet another brilliant last-to-first win in the $500,000 Gr1 George Main Stakes (1600m) for 3YO+, defeating Happy Clapper & Foxplay. In claiming her 20th consecutive victory and the 13th at Group One level, Winx improved her remarkable record to 24 wins (including the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Gr1 Cox Plate - twice, Gr1 Caulfield Stakes, Gr1 George Main Stakes, Gr1 Doncaster Mile, Gr1 George Ryder Stakes - twice, Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes - twice, Gr1 Epsom Handicap, Gr1 Queensland Oaks, Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes, Gr2 Warwick Stakes – twice, Gr2 Apollo Stakes - twice, Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes, Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes & Gr2 Furious Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 Australian Oaks & Gr1 Flight Stakes) from 30 starts for $13,475,425 in earnings. Winx, who was a $230,000 Magic Bloodstock purchase at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud, is aiming to create history this spring by joining the legendary Kingston Town as the only horse to win three Cox Plates. Trainer Chris Waller said Winx was likely to have one more run in Sydney before travelling south to Melbourne for her date with destiny. "She's going terrific. She's spot on. The first Cox Plate she won off three runs. Her second Cox Plate was off four runs and this year she'll probably run in it off her sixth run," Waller said. "It's our job now to protect her and make sure she is there and the public can continue to enjoy her."

Dixie Ready To Blossom In Marks

Friday, 8th September 2017

Meanwhile, at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow, trainer Ron Quinton will be looking to propel star mare Dixie Blossoms into her Spring campaign when she lines up in what looms as a challenging hurdle in the Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes, reports smh.com.au. Having run gallant thirds in the Gr2 Emancipation Stakes (behind Zanbagh) and Gr1 Queen Turf (behind Foxplay who has been scratched), her two trials on August 8 and August 31 have both resulted in wins. Her first trial saw her beat both Gr2 Furious Stakes runner-up Champagne Cuddles and McEwan Stakes bound Russian Revolution (see previous article). Quinton commented, "[Dixie Blossoms] is a little more advanced so is ready for 1300m. She has been going really well on the track but it is a quality field she is meeting on Saturday. I think her best is in front of her, so the spring is going to be interesting." The Theo Marks sees first up talent like Dixie Blossoms colliding with boom mare Egg Tart first up from a dual Oaks success in Adelaide and Brisbane, the talented Hayes / Dabernig raider Cannyescent, and hot second-up prospect Deploy.

Winx Makes It 19 Straight

Monday, 4th September 2017

While the headlines might read it was business as usual for Winx, the mighty daughter of Street Cry and Vegas Showgirl gave her supporters another heart-in-mouth experience before etching win 19 from her past 19 starts in the $252,000 Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick. On a beautiful early Spring day in front of an army of adoring fans 6YO mare Winx was forced to fight for her life, even more so than when slow to start in her penultimate run, after Josh Parr set sail for home a long way out on Red Excitement (Excites) who'd made all the running. The daring catch me if you can tactics almost paid off with Hugh Bowman doing his utmost to keep Winx balanced before cutting her loose with 150m to go to haul in the leader, with Chocante third. In the end it all looked pretty easy, however both Bowman and trainer Chris Waller acknowledged that this time around the situation was even more worrying than what they'd experienced in the Warwick Stakes, a race that left runner-up Foxplay flattened. The additional $144,250 pushed Winx's earnings to $13,183,425 as she sets off in her quest to make it 20 straight in the lead up to a possible Gr1 Cox Plate treble.

Gear to Focus Champ

Tuesday, 29th August 2017

Trainer Chris Waller has confirmed that Winx will wear ear muffs on Saturday to ensure there is no repeat of her well documented last-start barrier mishap. The champion mare missed the start by 5 lengths when resuming in the Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on 19 August, but somehow recovered to post a stunning last gasp victory over stable-mate Foxplay in the Gr2 feature. Winx will be chasing her 19th consecutive win in Saturday's Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, and Waller is hopeful the gear change will have the desired effect. ''It just helps block out the background noise,'' Waller told racingnsw.com.au. ''She'll still hear Hugh Bowman say 'it's time to go'.'' Winx is aiming to create history this spring by joining the legendary Kingston Town as the only horse to win three Cox Plates.

First-Up Run Takes Toll on Foxplay

Tuesday, 29th August 2017

Meanwhile, Winx's Gr1-wining stable-mate Foxplay could be given an extra week's rest despite holding two entries at Randwick on Saturday. Foxplay has been nominated for both the Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and Gr2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) but could miss the features in favour of the Gr2 Theo Marks (1300m) a week later. Trainer Chris Waller said Foxplay's near upset of Winx in the Gr2 Warwick Stakes, in which she ran the champion mare to her shortest margin in two years (0.2 length), exacted a physical toll on the 4YO. ''She had a hard run," Waller said. "Normally I would gallop her on Saturday but we decided to hold her back until Tuesday. She left a considerable amount of feed. It shows how tough a run Foxplay had to try and beat Winx.''

Winx Shortest Price of Career

Tuesday, 29th August 2017

Winx has opened at the shortest price of her career to win Saturday's Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick. The champion mare, who will be chasing her 19th successive victory, has been installed as the $1.06 pre-post favourite with TAB. Stable-mate Foxplay, who was runner-up to Winx in the Gr2 Warwick Stakes last-start, is her nearest market rival at $15. "The mile is arguably her best distance and even at $1.06, we're sure there will be a lot of punters backing Winx because they just love being able to cheer on the champion," TAB's Gerard Middleton said.

Winx's shortest odds of her career

  • $1.06 - 2017 Chelmsford Stakes
  • $1.09 - 2016 George Main Stakes
  • $1.10 - 2017 Warwick Stakes
  • $1.12 - 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes
  • $1.14 - 2017 Apollo Stakes
  • $1.22 - 2017 Chipping Norton Stakes
  • $1.24 - 2016 Caulfield Stakes
  • $1.24 - 2016 Warwick Stakes
  • $1.26 - 2017 George Ryder Stakes
  • $1.35 - 2016 Chipping Norton Stakes
  • $1.50 - 2017 Cox Plate

Winx Wins Gr2 Warwick Stakes

Monday, 21st August 2017

In circumstances that had every bookmaker thinking Christmas had come early until the shadows of the post, Australia's racing darling Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) had to dig really deep to lift Saturday's $243,250 Gr2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick in Sydney for trainer Chris Waller. The 6YO daughter of Darley's deceased shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) drew audible gasps from the on-course crowd when hopelessly missing the break in her first start since winning the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in early April. Regular pilot Hugh Bowman kept a cool head, methodically working the champion to overcome her 5-lengths deficit to a point where she could tack on and have an opportunity to rattle home. Relatively untouched until the last 100m where Bowman briefly went for the persuader, Winx delighted racegoers to deny game runner-up Foxplay by 0.2-lengths, just ahead of Ecuador (High Chaparral-Bak de Princess, by Danski). Trainer Chris Waller intimated post-race that she will back up in a fortnight as she builds towards the defence of her Cox Plate in a quest to equal Kingston Town's record of three consecutive wins in the significant weight-for-age Moonee Valley feature. Now undefeated in her past 18 starts against all-comers, Winx improved her dazzling record to 22 wins (including the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Gr1 Cox Plate - twice, Gr1 Caulfield Stakes, Gr1 George Main Stakes, Gr1 Doncaster Mile, Gr1 George Ryder Stakes - twice, Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes - twice, Gr1 Epsom Handicap, Gr1 Queensland Oaks, Gr1 Warwick Stakes, Gr2 Apollo Stakes - twice, Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes, Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes & Gr2 Furious Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 Australian Oaks & Gr1 Flight Stakes) from 28 starts for $13,039,175 earnings. Winx was a $230,000 Magic Bloodstock purchase at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud.

Foxplay & Winx to Meet in Spring

Tuesday, 8th August 2017

Group One-winning mare Foxplay is set to clash with her champion stable-mate Winx in the early part of the spring, beginning with the Gr2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday week, reports Racing And Sports. Foxplay and Winx are then programmed to run in the Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on 2 September, with Winx to then head to the Gr1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on 16 September. Trainer Chris Waller will then decide whether Foxplay remains in Sydney or heads south to Melbourne for races such as the Gr1 Myer Classic. "Spring plans for Foxplay are currently fluid, though she is likely to be kept at a mile with races such as the Myer Classic and maybe the Epsom on her radar," said Waller's stable manager, Charles Duckworth. "She's got a very exciting spring ahead of her. She doesn't need to be going any further than a mile." Foxplay emerged as a possible heir to Winx when posting a brilliant win in the Gr1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes (otherwise known as the Gr1 Queen of The Turf Stakes) in the autumn. Foxplay will step out in heat two over 1000m at today's Randwick trials.

Rebel Dane Half Set For Debut

Wednesday, 24th May 2017

Meanwhile, despite Envy of All and the Godolphin-prepared Tiki Bar being in control at the top of betting markets, a beautifully bred filly and half-sister to brilliant and recently retired galloper Rebel Dane sits expectantly in the pre-post betting shadows, reports theinformant.co.nz. As Rebel Dane leaves his famous box 14 at the stables of trainer Gary Portelli to commence his freshman sire year at Victoria's Swettenham Stud, his half-sister Dixie moves into the spotlight. "Dixie is a lovely Foxwedge filly, but she is a back-marker like Rebel Dane," noted Portelli. A son of the prodigious Fastnet Rock, who captured the Gr1 William Reid Stakes amongst many sterling sprint performances at the highest level, Foxwedge has already sired 81 winners from his first three crops, including 5 stakeswinners and 2 Group winners. Top of this list are the Chris Waller trained Gr1 Queen of the Turf winner Foxplay and Gr2 Eight Carat Classic winner Volpe Veloce. Dixie is the fifth foal of More Than Ready mare Texarcana.

Foxplay Wins Gr1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes

Monday, 10th April 2017

On day two of The Championships at Royal Randwick in Sydney, Newgate Farm's Gr1-winning shuttle stallion Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) celebrated his first top-flight winner when 3YO filly Foxplay (Foxwedge-Butters, by El Prado) powered home from the rear of the field to score by 0.5 length for trainer Chris Waller in the $1 million Gr1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes (1600m) for 3YO+ fillies & mares, over 6YO mare Zanbagh (Bernardini-Wild Iris, by Spectrum) & 4YO mare Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense-Whistle Dixie, by Star Way). Foxplay improved her record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes, Gr2 Furious Stakes & Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr2 Light Fingers Stakes) from 13 starts for $1,220,810 earnings. Foxplay, whose second dam is Gr1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Eliza, was a $160,000 purchase by Star Thoroughbreds at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Newgate Farm. "She's been a very special horse to us," Waller told Sky Racing. "We call her the Winx Junior, but there's a lot of similarities…I decided not to run this filly in the Oaks because I think she's got some brilliance and some speed." Foxplay earned herself the distinction of being the first Gr1 winner for her exciting young sire Foxwedge.

Foxplay Wins Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes

Monday, 13th March 2017

At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Newgate Farm's Gr1-winning shuttle stallion Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat ) added a Group success when exciting 3YO filly Foxplay (Foxwedge-Butters, by El Prado) scored by 0.3-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $200,000 Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) for 3YO fillies, over fellow fillies Zenalicious (Choisir-Zenith, by Fantastic Light) & Cosmic Set (Reset-Riddles, by Distorted Humour). Appearing to have been given too much to do by Kerrin McEvoy, the odds-on favourite was shown the persuader turning for home, only to run into traffic and throw her head in the air. Straightened up again, and at risk of missing the placings, Foxplay threaded her way through a gap to score impressively with the suggestion of higher honours to come. Foxplay improved her record to 4 wins (including the Gr2 Furious Stakes & Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr2 Light Fingers Stakes) from 11 starts for $498,810 earnings. Foxplay, whose second dam is Gr1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Eliza, was a $160,000 purchase by Star Thoroughbreds at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Newgate Farm.
