At Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia, Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & 2007 Gr1 Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun (Danzig-Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) added a black-type success when 4YO bay gelding Gatting (Hard Spun-Stubborn, by Lonhro) proved too strong for his rivals in the $100,000 Listed Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) for 3YO+, defeating Dark Alert & Ihtsahymn. Gatting improved his record to 7 wins (including the Gr2 WATC Derby & Listed Melvista Stakes) and 7 placings (including the Listed Belmont Guineas & Listed Belmont Classic) from 20 starts for $664,700 in earnings. Trainer Darren McAuliffe said he hoped the victory would earn Gatting a start in the $1 million Gr1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in a fortnight. "You'd expect he would be in the Railway now," McAuliffe told the West Australian. "He hasn't really had a lot of luck in his last two runs and we had to win today to get into the Railway."

At Belmont racecourse in Perth, Western Australia, Vinery Stud's Gr1-winning stallion Casino Prince (Flying Spur-Lady Capel, by Last Tycoon) added a black-type success when 3YO bay gelding Jackpot Prince (Casino Prince-Transit Of Venus, by Galileo) put up a remarkable performance when storming home from last on the turn to win the $100,000 Listed Belmont Classic (2200m) for 3YOs, defeating Persian Princess & Gatting. Trainer Jason Miller, who prepares Jackpot Prince in partnership with Geoff Durrant, said the 3YO had the potential to develop into a Perth Cup horse. "Credit to the horse and to the ride. You might see him in a year's time a Perth Cup horse," Miller told the West Australian. "He'll be going out now. It's been a long campaign…he probably needed a spell a couple of runs ago." Jackpot Prince is the 15th stakes winner for Casino Prince who stands at Vinery in 2017 at a fee of $11,000.

The WATC Derby winner will line up in the $100,000 feature after running fourth in the Aquanita Stakes (2000m) on 8 July, and winning a 2100m handicap last Saturday. "He's pulled up terrific," McAuliffe said. "The horse has an iron constitution and backs up well with a solid preparation. We'll be keeping him up to the mark before the Classic." He added: "He'll work on Monday and will gallop on Thursday. We won't miss him."
