Hopfgarten Chasing Summer Bonuses

Friday, 15th December 2017

Trainer Robert Heathcote will chase some rich summer bonuses with Hopfgarten starting in tomorrow's Gr2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick. However, Heathcote's confidence suffered an early blow when the talented 7YO drew barrier 14 for the $250,000 feature. "There's a $100,000 bonus if he wins the Villiers and Bernborough Handicap [in Queensland] and there's a $50,000 bonus if he places in the Villiers and wins the Bernborough," Heathcote told Racing Queensland. "It's disappointing...our chances have nosedived after the barrier draw. But he drew the same barrier in last year's Villiers and ran home strongly to run fifth, only two lengths away." Hopfgarten (Mossman-Black Tourmaline, by O'Reilly) has been in good form this campaign, winning over 1200m at Doomben in October and placing in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m) and Listed Recognition Stakes (1350m) at his past two outings. "He's a good miler and the big Randwick track will suit him," Heathcote said. "He's definitely capable of winning the Villiers but he'll need a lot of luck and a good ride from Christian Reith."

Villiers Target for Hopfgarten

Monday, 16th October 2017

Multiple stakes-winning Queensland galloper Hopfgarten (Mossman-Black Tourmaline, by O'Reilly) booked a start in the Gr2 Villiers Stakes in Sydney in the summer with a brilliant comeback win at Doomben on Saturday, reports Racing Queensland Webnews. Having first start since June, Hopfgarten defied his big weight to score a dominant 0.75 length win over Sydney visitor Supreme Effort in the Bartons Open Handicap over 1200m. "I'm glad to see him win again as he's probably my stable favourite now that Buffering has retired," Heathcote said. "That was a good win and I'm getting him ready for the Villiers Stakes in Sydney and the Bernborough Handicap again." He added: "He ran in the Villiers last year and didn't have much luck finishing fifth but he was only beaten two lengths."

Weather Key for Hopfgarten

Friday, 19th May 2017

Robert Heathcote is one trainer hoping that the predicted heavy rain arrives at Doomben tomorrow, reports AAP. Heathcote is keen to run Hopfgarten (Mossman) in the Gr3 BRC Sprint (1350m) as a final lead-up to the $1.5 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June, but only if the talented 6YO gets his preferred ground. "One thing he loves is the new Eagle Farm track and he loves it soft. Also he will probably get 53 or 52.5 kilograms in the Stradbroke which will also be a big help," Heathcote said. "But first we have to get over Saturday and the BRC Sprint. He has drawn wide and provided we do get rain he will run." Heathcote added: "It will be his last run before the Stradbroke. I was tempted to go into next week's Kingsford Smith Cup at Eagle Farm but this is probably better. But I can go there if no rain comes."

"He's won over $1 million now which is not a bad effort for a horse which cost $40,000," trainer Bjorn Baker told Racing Queensland Webnews. "The tracks in Sydney have been too wet for him but it's all systems go now in Brisbane and he'll run next in the Doomben 10,000 in a fortnight."

Hopfgarten To Benefit From Run

Friday, 4th December 2015

Queensland trainer Robert Heathcote is banking on Hopfgarten's class to get him over the line in tomorrow's Listed Brisbane Handicap (1640m) at Doomben, reports horseracing.com.au. The dual Gr3-winning 5YO has just returned from an unsuccessful spring campaign in Melbourne where he finished unplaced in all four starts, including the Gr1 Toorak Handicap and Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, and Heathcote suspects he may need the outing. "He might just need this run but you can never discount class as it can carry you a long way," Heathcote said. "His barrier and his big weight are against him but he may be a little soft for this after just returning home from Melbourne." He added: "If Hopfgarten was at the top of his game I'd be a lot more confident. I've just got a funny feeling he might need the run." After Saturday, Heathcote will use the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1600m) at Doomben in a fortnight as Hopfgarten's final prep run for the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (1800m) at the Gold Coast on 9 January. "He'll be a lot fitter for his next run in the Bernborough Handicap then it's on to the Magic Millions Trophy," Heathcote said.
