Star Mare Under Injury Cloud

Tuesday, 17th October 2017

I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band) may still be given the opportunity to defend her Gr1 Myer Classic title despite pulling up lame following last Saturday's Toorak Handicap at Caulfield, reports racing.com. Stewards reported the 4YO mare to be lame in her near-fore while trainer Shane Nichols confirmed she had jarred up badly when finishing last (18th of 18) behind Tosen Stardom in the $500,000 mile feature. "We'll trot her up for the vet in the morning [Tuesday]. He'll have a look at her but I don't think it's anything significant," Nichols said. "She'll probably go to the beach for a couple of days and then we'll assess whether she goes to the paddock or goes to the Myer Classic." Nichols added: "If I've got any concerns that she might have trained off or that she's got any soundness issues, I won't hesitate to send her straight to the paddock."

Star-Studded Field for NZB Memsie Stakes

Thursday, 31st August 2017

The 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Caulfield Spring Weight-For-Age Championship heats up on Saturday with the running of the second leg, the $1 million Gr1 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield. The prize money for the Memsie Stakes has doubled this year from $500,000 to $1 million, a move that has been rewarded with a sensational field for the first Group One race of the 2017-18 Australian racing season. Hartnell (Authorized) won the first leg of the Series, the $200,000 PB Lawrence Stakes on 19 August, but is bypassing Saturday's race. A stellar cast of proven elite performers will be out to move up the points table in his absence. Nine of the 12 runners are Group 1 winners, including last year's winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) and the high-class Karaka graduates Jon Snow (Iffraaj) and I Am A Star (I Am Invincible). The Series will have a new leader if either Charmed Harmony (8 points, 2nd in Leg 1) or Black Heart Bart (6 points, 3rd in Leg 1) finish in the first three on Saturday, while a Memsie Stakes win by Tosen Stardom (3 points, 5th in Leg 1) or Humidor (1 point, 6th in Leg 1) would send them to the top of the table. The NZB Memsie Stakes will be run as Race 7 with a start time of 4:10pm (6:10pm NZT). Click below to view the NZB Memsie Stakes field.

Star Filly Excites Trainer

Thursday, 27th July 2017

Trainer Shane Nichols has confirmed that top-flight filly I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band) will trial at Cranbourne on 7 August before licking off her spring campaign. Last year's Gr1 Myer Classic winner will resume in either the Gr3 Aurie's Star (1200m) at Flemington on 12 August, or the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield a week later, with the Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September an early target. "She looks enormous, probably the best she has. She looks that good I can't wait to get her racing again," Nichols told racenet. "As she's already a Group One winner we'll be aiming high with her in the spring. Certainly a race like the Memsie at Caulfield and the other weight-for-age races at a mile." He added: "Depending on how she is coping with those then we'll see if she can stretch out over a bit further."

Star Filly Close to Return

Friday, 21st July 2017

Trainer Shane Nichols said the Gr1 winner was not yet ready to trial, and that no firm plans had been made for the spring. "It's the best she's ever looked after a spell," Nichols said. "There are so many options for a horse like her." A winner of the Gr1 Myer Classic last spring, I Am A Star has not raced since finishing third behind Secret Agenda in the Gr1 Ubet Classic (formerly Robert Sangster Stakes) on 6 May.

Sunline Stakes Next For Star Filly

Wednesday, 22nd March 2017

Top-flight filly I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band) is scheduled to make her next appearance in Friday night's Gr2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, reports racing.com. Trainer Shane Nichols had contemplated running the 3YO against open class sprinters in the Gr1 William Reid Stakes on the same program, but decided to keep her in fillies' grade. If successful on Friday, Nichols revealed I Am A Star was likely to head north to Sydney for the $3 million Gr1 Doncaster Mile en route to the Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide in May. However, any Sydney sojourn would be determined by the weather. "I felt that if we drew badly with a competitive field of good horses in the William Reid it would remove most of our options to have another run until the Robert Sangster," Nichols said. "If we run in the Sunline and she's good enough to win and the weather clears up in the Sydney then we've still got the option to go to the Doncaster…"

Trainer Happy With Star Filly

Thursday, 9th February 2017

Trainer Shane Nichols says Gr1-winning filly I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band) is in good order ahead of her scheduled return to racing in Saturday's Gr2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, reports AAP. The 3YO, who hasn't raced since winning the Gr1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on 29 October, pleased Nichols when finishing fourth of five runners in an 800 metre trial at Cranbourne on Tuesday morning. "She's pulled up beautiful," Nichols said. "We've got a long prep ahead of us, whether that's in Melbourne or Sydney. We'll tee off with no weight on our back in the Rubiton on Saturday and then she should be cherry ripe for wherever she goes next." After Saturday, I Am A Star will progress to the Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield on 25 February. "Physically she's much better this time, but she has to be," Nichols said. "She's coming up against some quality horses. We managed to beat the mares in the Myer, now we have to play against the boys." I Am A Star will be ridden by Craig Williams and will carry just 53.5kg in Saturday's $200,000 sprint.

Oaks Target For Nurse Kitchen

Wednesday, 1st February 2017

Former champion trainer Peter Moody says highly regarded filly Nurse Kitchen will be aimed at the Gr1 Australian Oaks in the autumn, reports theinformant.co.nz. Nurse Kitchen, who is prepared by David Brideoake on behalf of Moody and his wife Sarah, showed she was a filly with a bright future when landing the Gr2 Fillies Classic (1600m) in Melbourne during the spring, defeating subsequent Gr1 Myer Classic winner I Am A Star and Gr1 Flight Stakes runner-up Sezanne. "She'll have a trial at Cranbourne next week and probably resume in the Vanity on the 18th February," Moody said. "I'm tempted to see her run in the Australian Guineas, but her main aim is the Australian Oaks, so it might be a better idea to go to Sydney earlier and take her through the fillies' races." By Savabeel, Nurse Kitchen is out of the Montjeu mare Flying Monty, a half-sister to New Zealand Derby winner Hades.

Inglis Classic Firmly in Spotlight

Thursday, 19th January 2017

Australia’s fastest growing yearling sale - The Inglis Classic – has become the focus of buyers as the inaugural Gold Riband session takes centre stage on opening night. Over three days starting at 6pm on Saturday, 11 February, 600 Lots will be offered as buyers search for the next Extreme Choice, Yankee Rose or I Am A Star – all 2015 Classic graduates – or She Will Reign, the early 2016 star attraction. The exclusive Gold Riband has been introduced as a session for select yearlings with the pedigree and conformation to exceed in the elite 2YO races. “We introduced the Blue Riband at our Premier Sale in Melbourne four years ago, specifically for staying types, and our vendors and buyers love the concept so with the Gold Riband being for precocious two-year-olds, we’re boisterous this will be the next big thing,’’ Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said. Between 2014 and 2016 alone, the sale gross has more than doubled to over $27,000,000, with the average jumping almost 40% to more than $57,000. Popular third-season sire Smart Missile tops this year’s Classic stallion list with 30 progeny entered, ahead of Epaulette and 2006 Classic graduate I Am Invincible with 28 apiece. The catalogue consists of 43 relations to Stakes winners, 42 relations to Stakes placegetters, 58 yearlings from Stakes-winning mares and 52 from Stakes-placed mares. Rubiton First-Up For Star Filly

Thursday, 19th January 2017

Trainer Shane Nichols says there are plenty of feature race options for Gr1 Myer Classic winner I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band) in the autumn, reports Racing.com. I Am A Star is set to resume in the Gr2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on 11 February. "There are any number of races she could aim up at this autumn but she'll more than likely start off in the Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield on February 11 after she has a trial," Nichols said. "With a rating of 105, she really has to begin her campaign in open class but then she can then go to those fillies' races like the Armanasco and we might end up in the Australian Guineas [Gr1] before we get to Sydney for races like the Coolmore Classic [Gr1] and Queen Of The Turf [Gr1]." Nichols said I Am A Star had a returned a much stronger filly this time in. "Compared to what she looked like at the start of the spring, she looks a million times better now," he said. "Her coat's better, she's carrying a lot more muscle and a lot more bulk now."

Monday, 24th October 2016

At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Waikato Stud's Cox Plate winning stallion Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) added a Group success when 3YO filly Nurse Kitchen (Savabeel-Flying Monty, by Montjeu) scored by 0.5 length for trainer David Brideoake in the $200,000 Gr2 Fillies Classic (1600m) for 3YO fillies, over fellow fillies Sezanne (More Than Ready-Champagne Harmony, by Choisir) & I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band). Nurse Kitchen, who is out of a half-sister to New Zealand Derby winner Hades, improved her record to 2 wins from 3 starts for $134,300 earnings. "She's a lovely, promising filly that's very lightly raced with lots of upside," said trainer David Brideoake, who prepares Nurse Kitchen on behalf of her owner and breeder Sarah Moody. "I think we'll just tread quietly. We've always thought that she's a little immature and would require a little bit of racing." He added: "We think she'll be really there in the autumn."

"She's an absolute star," co-trainer Adrian Bott said. "We saw her put it all together last start and she's taken it to another level today." Bott's co-trainer Gai Waterhouse praised the filly's buyer James Bester and was quick to celebrate the win with a large group of ladies on course. "There are a couple of options - maybe the Coolmore Classic [Gr1] - the mile race for fillies and mares and she's a Magic Millions horse and all of the ladies from around the world can catch up again there perhaps," she said. The $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in January looks an ideal option for a star filly - on the second anniversary of her purchase on the Gold Coast.
