At Flemington in Melbourne, Darley's former Champion Australian Sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) added a Group race success when 3YO bay filly Jorda (Exceed And Excel-Montmelo, by Viscount) claimed the second stakes win of her career in the $200,000 Gr3 Kennedy Plate (1100m) for 3YO fillies, defeating I Am Excited & Smart Coupe. A homebred for Darley and Godolphin, Jorda improved her record to 2 wins (including the Listed Gimcrack Stakes) and 2 placings (including the Gr3 ATC San Domenico Stakes) from 6 starts for $262,400 in earnings.
At Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Cannarelle, by Canny Lad) added a Group race success when 3YO brown filly Invincible Star (I Am Invincible-Romany Flyer, by Catbird) scored a dominant front-running victory in the $150,000 Gr3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) for 3YO fillies, defeating fellow fillies Counterplay & Jorda. Purchased for $200,000 by Gai Waterhouse Racing & Julian Blaxland at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud, Invincible Star improved her record to 2 wins (including the Gr3 Ottawa Stakes) from 4 starts for $195,250 in earnings. Invincible Star hails from the family of Gr1 Flight Stakes winner Unearthly and her South Australian Oaks winning daughter Invest, Australian Derby & Rosehill Guineas winner Innocent King, Queensland Derby winner Our Planet, and Gr2 winning stallion Gypsy Kingdom.
At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Arrowfield Stud's multiple Champion Australian Sire Redoute's Choice (Danehill-Shantha's Choice, by Canny Lad) added a Group success when 3YO bay colt Pariah (Redoute's Choice-Secluded, by Hussonet) resumed with a brilliant win in the $150,000 Gr3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) for 3YOs, defeating Chauffeur & Jorda. Pariah, who improved his record to 2 wins (including the Gr3 Canonbury Stakes) and 2 placings (including the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes & Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude) from 5 starts for $477,500 in earnings, is now the $6 TAB favourite for the $1 million Gr1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on 23 September. "We will concentrate on the Run To The Rose and the Golden Rose. Anything else comes after that," co-trainer Peter Snowden told Sky Racing. "This horse has come back a lot stronger - physically and mentally." A $700,000 purchase by James Harron Bloodstock at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud, Pariah is a three-quarter blood relation to dual Gr1-winning mare Melito (Redoute's Choice-Cloister, by Marauding). Pariah's breeder Arrowfield Stud acquired a 50% interest in him back in April along with the standing rights for his future stud career.
Meanwhile, Pariah (see above article) has been opened as a fairly short favourite for Saturday's Gr3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. Won last year by Vinery Stud's exciting 2017 freshman sire Star Turn, the San Domenico is one of the traditional seasonal pipe-openers for 3YOs. Pariah, who finished runner-up in the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes at his penultimate run, is the TAB's $2.50 favourite, ahead of Condor Heroes (runner-up in the Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes on April Fools Day) and exciting filly Tulip, scratched last Saturday, who placed in the Gr1 Golden Slipper). The duo is at $6, ahead of $8 quotes Jorda and Marsupial.
At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Darley's former Champion Australian Sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) added a black-type success when 2YO Godolphin filly Jorda (Exceed and Excel-Montmelo, by Viscount) scored by 0.8 length for trainer John O'Shea in the $150,000 Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) for 2YO fillies, over fellow 2YO fillies Kanga's Eye (Denman-Watchme, by Bel Esprit) & Lucky Louie (Pluck-La Bella Luisa, by Clang). Jorda's debut victory took her record to 1 win form 1 start for $89,100 in earnings.
