Carzoff Wins Gr3 Newcastle Gold Cup

Monday, 17th September 2018

At Newcastle in New South Wales, Coolmore's Gr1 Phoenix Stakes-winning shuttler Zoffany (Dansili–Tyranny, by Machiavellian) added a Group success when 6YO gelding Carzoff (Zoffany-Cartama, by Mark Of Esteem) scored by 0.4-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $200,000 Gr3 Newcastle Cup (2300m) for 3YOs+, defeating 8YO gelding Auvray & 6YO gelding Just Shine. Given a peach of a ride which saw him threading his way through the field before finding the lead, Carzoff added to his consistent record which now stands at 5 wins (including September’s Listed Wyong Gold Cup) and 8 placings from 23 starts for $463,896 earnings. Carzoff was sold through the Arqana ring in France, the second time as a tried horse when knocked down to Guy Mulcaster for €225,000. Stable spokesperson Liam Prior enthused after the emphatic win: “I don’t know what the boss (trainer, Chris Waller) is thinking but I suppose the Metropolitan Handicap lines up now in a fortnight and it’s probably where he deserves to be heading.”
