Gobstopper Wins Gr3 New Zealand Cup

Monday, 20th November 2017

At Riccarton in New Zealand, Cambridge Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Tavistock (Montjeu-Upstage, by Quest For Fame) added a Group race success when 5YO New Zealand-bred gelding Gobstopper (Tavistock-Bagalollies, by Zabeel) outstayed his rivals to record a comprehensive win in the 154th running of the $250,000 Gr3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) for 3YO+, defeating Pentathlon & Kaharau. Gobstopper, who is a full-brother to multiple Gr1 winner and Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther, improved his record to 6 wins and 2 placings from 21 starts for NZ$198,656 in earnings. "We decided to target this race right from the time he came back in. He's a lightly-framed horse so he doesn't need much racing," trainer Andrew Campbell told NZ Racing Desk. "He's only going to get better with time like his brother Werther."
