One of the more interesting runners that will step out at Flemington on Saturday will be exciting Sydney colt Kaonic. Trained by Chris Waller for owner Neville Morgan, the New Zealand-bred Kaonic has hitherto won 2 of his 3 starts, including impressive wins at his past two outings at Canterbury (1550m) and Randwick (1600m). Kaonic, who races in the same white & royal blue hooped sleeves as Morgan's former dual Gr1 winner Kermadec, will face a steep class rise from a Benchmark 75 to a Group 3 when he contests the Carbine Club Stakes over 1600m. It is the same path the Waller stable took with Kermadec as a spring 3YO, which shows just how high they rate Kaonic. Purchased for $425,000 by Guy Mulcaster at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Kaonic is by champion NZ sire Savabeel out of the Listed Warstep Stakes (2000m) winner Fast Love (Fastnet Rock). This is the family of Tasmanian Gr3 winner Kiss Me Ketut, stakes winner A Chance To Dream, as well as English Oaks & English 1000 Guineas winner Midway Lady, herself the dam of 2005 English Oaks winner Eswarah.
