Magic Chai Wins Gr3 Wellington Cup

Monday, 22nd January 2018

At Trentham in New Zealand, former Yarraman Park and now Kooringal Stud-based Gr2-winning sire Magic Albert (Zeditave-Sally Lou, by Salieri) added a Group race success when 5YO Australian-bred gelding Magic Chai (Magic Albert-Chai, by Viscount) opened his stakes account when charging home to score a narrow but decisive win in the $250,000 Gr3 Wellington Cup (3200m) for 3YO+, defeating Sampson & Alinko Prince. Trainer Tony Pike said Magic Chai would now be set for a feature two-mile double, including the Gr1 Auckland Cup at Ellerslie on 10 March. "We'll get him home and see how he is and if his form holds up then the Auckland Cup is an obvious target," Pike told NZ Racing Desk. "He's only had 18 starts so he's still pretty much untapped. He's a good, genuine stayer." Magic Chai, who was sold for $90,000 at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Milburn Creek, improved his record to 5 wins and 1 placing from 18 starts for NZ$212,255 in earnings. Magic Chai hails from the family of multiple Gr1 winner and outstanding Kiwi mare Riverina Charm and Gr1 ATC Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Neroli.
