At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, Arrowfield Stud's multiple Champion Australian Sire Redoute's Choice (Danehill-Shantha's Choice, by Canny Lad) added a Group success when 2YO colt Pariah (Redoute's Choice-Secluded, by Hussonet) scored by 1 length for trainers Peter & Paul Snowden in the $150,000 Gr3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) for 2YO colts & geldings, over fellow 2YO colt Menari (Snitzel-Isurava, by General Nediym) & 2YO Godolphin colt Malahat (Exceed and Excel-Raspberries, by Lonhro). This was a promising debut victory for Pariah whose record now reads 1 win from 1 start for $85,750 earnings. Co-trainer Peter Snowden said Pariah would head to Melbourne for the Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on 11 February. "He's a really nice horse. He has been from day one," Snowden said. "The favourite didn't have much luck either to be buried away but this horse has so much upside to him." Indeed, Menari was desperately unlucky not to have made it two wins from two starts when held up badly in the straight. However, all honours were with the winner. A $700,000 purchase by James Harron Bloodstock at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud, Pariah has a big pedigree to live up to being a three-quarter blood relation to former top-class Australian mare Melito (Redoute's Choice-Cloister, by Marauding). Melito, a dual Gr1 winner of the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and Winter Stakes (1400m), was purchased by Coolmore for $1.65 million at the 2012 Magic Millions National Select Broodmare Sale with the China Horse Club taking a 25 per cent stake. Melito's only progeny to race thus far is the 4YO Encosta de Lago entire Campbell Junior, a 4-time winner in Japan. She also has a yearling filly by Galileo.
