At Pakenham in Victoria, former Armidale Stud stallion Helike (Rahy-East of the Moon, by Private Account) added a black-type success when 8YO Australian-bred gelding Like A Carousel (Helike-Carnival Ride, by Spinning World) held on for a narrow win in the $250,000 Listed Pakenham Cup (2500m) for 3YO+, defeating Khartoum & Oncidium Ruler. This was just the second stakes victory of Like A Carousel's career and improved his record to 4 wins (including the Listed Harry White Classic) and 11 placings (including the Gr1 Sydney Cup & Listed Sandown Cup) from 52 starts for $678,570 in earnings.
At Ballarat in Melbourne, stakes-winning stallion Grand Reve (Canny Lad-Recce, by Spectacular Love) added a black-type success when 7YO Australian-bred gelding Grand Dreamer (Grand Reve-Dream Lady, by Testa Rossa) unwound a strong sustained run to claim his maiden stakes victory in the $300,000 Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) for 3YO+, defeating Oncidium Ruler & Grey Lion. Trainer Robert Smerdon said the rain that fell prior to the race payed into Grand Dreamer's hands. "I looked at the forecast a week ago and they said showers on Friday and Saturday and I thought, 'well, if it's going to rain anywhere it'll rain in Ballarat'," Smerdon told racing.com. "But still it was a big ask. I didn't know if he was good enough to win a Ballarat Cup." Smerdon added: "The weather today brought him into the race and we rode him in that conservative fashion and it came off." Grand Dreamer improved his record to 9 wins and 16 placings from 39 starts for $435,000 in earnings.
