At Hobart in Tasmania, Woodside Park's Gr2-winning stallion Written Tycoon (Iglesias-Party Miss, by Kenmare) added a stakes race success when 3YO Australian-bred colt Overplay (Written Tycoon-Darcenell, by Tailings) caused an upset of odds of $26 when opening his stakes account in the $100,000 Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) for 3YOs, defeating Double You Tee & Pateena Arena. Overplay, who is out of Listed Tasmanian Oaks winner Darcenell, improved his record to 2 wins and 1 placing from 7 starts for $79,100 in earnings.

Armidale Stud Announces Fees

Tasmania's Armidale Stud has announced its stallion service fees for the 2017 season. To reinforce Armidale's commitment to offer breeders the highest quality stallions at value for money, the Whishaw family have sourced the explosive Gr2 winner and Gr1-placed Alpine Eagle to stand alongside the ?exciting young stallion Needs Further and the ever consistent Tough Speed. Alpine Eagle is the highest profile galloper to ever retire to stud in Tasmania and is expected to attract support from astute interstate breeders. "Alpine Eagle was an absolutely sensational racehorse with untapped ability. He's a horse with an amazing presence and an exceptional athletic physique. He is without a doubt one of the best horses that I have ever trained," said Tony McEvoy. Needs Further has commenced his stud career in sensational fashion producing dual stakes winning filly Pateena Arena and 2YO track record holder Il Regalo from his first crop, while Tough Speed continues to be a consistent source of winners boasting an impressive winners to runner's statistic of 60%. Pateena Arena Wins Listed Elwick Stakes

At Hobart in Tasmania on Sunday, Armidale Stud's Gr3-winning stallion Needs Further (Encosta de Lago-Crowned Glory, by Danehill) sired his first stakes winner when 2YO filly Pateena Arena (Needs Further-Gehenna, by Ladoni) scored by 0.2 length for trainer Bill Ryan in the $100,000 Listed Elwick Stakes (1100m) for 2YOs, over fellow 2YO fillies Derasa (Squamosa-Jesting, by Commands) & Gee Gee Lanett (Wordsmith-Vivre la Nett, by Savoire Vivre). Pateena Arena, who was purchased for $22,000 by her trainer Bill Ryan at the 2016 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale from the draft of Armidale Stud, improved her record to 2 wins and 1 placing from 4 starts for $71,800 earnings.

Second Winner For Needs Further

Armidale Stud's Gr3-winning stallion Needs Further (Encosta de Lago-Crowned Glory, by Danehill) sired his second winner overnight when 2YO filly Pateena Arena won an 1100m maiden at Launceston in Tasmania. A winner of 3 of his 5 starts including the Gr3 ATC Carbine Club Stakes (1600m), Needs Further is a half-brother to dual Gr1 winner Hallowed Crown (Street Sense). Bred by Eduardo Cojuangco's Gooree Stud, Needs Further is out of Golden Slipper runner-up Crowned Glory (Danehill) and descends from the same female line as champion New Zealand stallion Zabeel, Australian Guineas winner Baryshnikov, and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winning mother and son Detroit and Carnegie.
