At Caulfield in Melbourne, Widden Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Star Witness (Starcraft-Leone Chiara, by Lion Hunter) added a black-type success when 3YO filly Crown Witness (Star Witness-Noble Heir, by Kahal) held on determinedly to defy all challengers by 0.2-length for trainer Stuart Webb in the $150,750 Gr3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) for 3YO fillies, over last season's Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy and Ploverset. Shoals Wins Gr3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes

Monday, 20th March 2017

At Flemington in Melbourne, Coolmore's former Gr1-winning Champion Australian Sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill-Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) added a Group success when beautifully related 2YO filly Shoals (Fastnet Rock-The Broken Shore, by Hussonet) scored by 0.5 length for trainers Lee & Anthony Freedman in the $150,000 Gr3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) for 2YO fillies, over fellow fillies Garrard (Sepoy-Fitness, by More Than Ready) & Ploverset (Street Boss-Edwina Georgie, by Testa Rossa). This was the first stakes victory for Shoals who extended her unbeaten record to 2 wins from 2 starts for $104,150 earnings. Bred by John Messara's Arrowfield Stud, who race her in partnership with Jonathan Munz's Pinecliff Racing, Shoals is by Fastnet Rock out of the valuable mare The Broken Shore (Hussonet), a daughter of outstanding producer Shantha's Choice. A $1.9 million purchase by Munz at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale from the Teeley Assets Dispersal, The Broken Shore is therefore a half-sister to Arrowfield's multiple champion Australian sire Redoute's Choice, Gr1 winners Platinum Scissors & Manhattan Rain, Gr3 winner Sliding Cube and stakes winner Echoes of Heaven, and a direct descendant of celebrated blue hen Best In Show. This is arguably the most sought after bloodline in the world, with other esteemed members including Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes winning sire Hurricane Sky, Umatilla, Xaar, Al Maher, Sex Appeal (dam of stallion heavyweights Try My Best & El Gran Senor), Kentucky Oaks winner Blush With Pride, and her daughter Better Than Honour, who fetched a world-record price of US$14 million for a broodmare in 2008 and is the dam of US classic winners Rags To Riches & Jazil.
