Monday, 2nd July 2018

At Belmont racecourse in Perth, WA, Yarradale Stud's Gr2-winning and Gr1-placed stallion Vital Equine (Danetime-Bayalika, by Selkirk) added a Group race success when ultra-consistent 6YO Australian-bred gelding Material Man (Vital Equine-Del Lirio, by Hussonet) continued his outstanding recent form when overcoming a wide run to hold on for a narrow win in the $150,000 Gr3 Strickland Stakes (2000m) for 2YO+, defeating the fast-finishing Pounamu & Gatting. This was the fifth successive stakes win for Material Man who improved his record to 14 wins (including the Gr2 Perth Cup, Gr3 Belmont Sprint, Gr3 Hyperion Stakes, Listed AHA Cup, Listed Bunbury Cup, & Listed Pinjarra Cup) & 5 placings from 23 starts for $1,312,775 in earnings. It was also an historic win for Material Man who became the first horse to claim the Belmont Sprint, Hyperion Stakes & Strickland Stakes treble. "When you're three-deep without cover from the 800 onwards and you're main danger's stalking you, I thought he (Pounamu) was going to get over us today," trainer Justin Warwick told the West Australian. "Everyone knows how good Pounamu is. We've had some good tussles along the way and I'm glad we had our head in front."

Pounamu Wins Gr1 Kingston Town Classic

Monday, 11th December 2017

At Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia, triple Gr1-winning former English Derby victor & Darley shuttler Authorized (Montjeu-Funsie, by Saumarez) celebrated an elite race success when 6YO grey gelding Pounamu (Authorized-Tangiwai, by Street Cry) landed the biggest prize of his career when unleashing his trademark late flourish to score a minor upset win in the $1 million Gr1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) for 3YO+, defeating Material Man & Achernar Star. The former NSW-trained Pounamu, who was placed at Gr3 level in the Gloaming Stakes & Spring Stakes in Sydney as a 3YO, improved his record to 9 wins (including the Gr3 Asian Beau Stakes & Listed Detonator Stakes) and 13 placings (including the Gr3 WATC Strickland Stakes, Gr3 Gloaming Stakes & Gr3 Spring Stakes) from 37 starts for $1,122,530 in earnings. "He came here [from Sydney] and won a couple of races and then was the biggest bridesmaid in WA," trainer Alan Mathews told Sky Racing. "We always said he had the ability, but he just didn't have the concentration span to get his head around doing it at the right time." He added: "We set this horse for the race; second-up into the Railway, third-up into this and it's all gone to plan." Matthews said Pounamu may head to the Gr2 Perth Cup (2400m) on 1 January but fears he may now be weighted out of the race.

Variation Gains Railway Start

Wednesday, 22nd November 2017

Talented 4YO Variation has been elevated into Saturday's Gr1 Railway Stakes field at the expense of Tradesman, reports the West Australian. Chief handicapper Ian Malpass used his discretionary powers to ensure the multiple stakes winner gained the 16th and final spot in the $1 million feature, a move which relegated Tradesman to first emergency. Malpass said he based his decision on the fact that the last time the two horses met, Variation finished second and Tradesman seventh behind Pounamu in the Gr3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) on 4 November. "They raced against each other in the Asian Beau and Variation beat Tradesman home comfortably," Malpass said. "I felt that performance was good enough to give Variation the final spot in the field." Variation's trainer Stephen Miller was understandably delighted. "We're very happy," he said. "He came through Saturday's run pretty good. He'll go to the beach for the rest of the week."

Monday, 3rd July 2017

At Belmont racecourse in West Australia, Arrowfield Stud's multiple stakes-winning stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice-Single's Bar, by Rory's Jester) added a Group success when classy 4YO bay gelding Scales Of Justice (Not a Single Doubt-Beymatilla, by Umatilla) virtually assured himself of West Australian Horse of the Year honours when leading all of the way for a narrow win in the $150,000 Gr3 Strickland Stakes (2000m) for 3YO+, defeating the fast-finishing Zarantz & Pounamu. Scales of Justice advanced his record to 9 wins (including the Gr1 Railway Stakes, Gr3 RJ Peters Stakes & Gr3 Hyperion Stakes) and 8 placings (including the Gr1 WATC Kingston Town Classic) from 17 starts for $1,357,450 in earnings. Purchased for $180,000 by his trainer Lindsey Smith & Boomer Bloodstock at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Scales of Justice hails from the family of outstanding sprinter Dual Choice (Showdown), an 8-time Gr1 winner of races such as the Oakleigh Plate (twice), Freeway Stakes (now the Manikato Stakes), Lightning Stakes, William Reid Stakes and Caulfield Guineas. Trainer Lindsey Smith indicated Scales Of Justice was unlikely to take on Winx in the Cox Plate in the spring after only falling in against Zarantz in his first attempt over 2000 metres. "I always remember that Douglas Whyte said to me he's a great mile horse," Smith told the West Australian. "On today I would say he is a better miler. I would say that his goal would be to go to the Railway again and then the Kingston Town."

This was successive stakes victories for the unbeaten Sweynesse who took his record to 4 wins (including the Gr3 Newcastle Spring Stakes) from 4 starts for $282,900 earnings. Trainer John O'Shea said the Cox Plate was now under consideration for Sweynesse who will have his next start in the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on 11 October. "We dare to dream. The machinations of the Cox Plate look a bit different this year," O'Shea told TVN. "A three-year-old with his staying ability and his form lines traditionally have been effective, and it's an option for us, obviously we've got to get him home and make sure he pulls up well. If he pulls up well he'll go to the Spring Champion and we will go from there."
