Astoria Wins Gr3 NJC Spring Stakes

Monday, 18th September 2017

At Newcastle in the Hunter region of NSW, Darley's multiple Gr1-winning shuttler Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado-Cappucino Bay, by Bailjumper) added a Group race success when 3YO Godolphin colt Astoria (Medaglia d'Oro-Segue, by Ad Valorem) claimed the first stakes victory of his career when saluting in the $150,000 Gr3 NJC Spring Stakes (1600m) for 3YOs, defeating Merovee & Primitivo. A homebred for Darley, Astoria improved his record to 2 wins and 2 placings (including the Gr3 Ming Dynasty Handicap) from 5 starts for $159,600 in earnings. The well-related Astoria is a direct descendent of legendary blue hen Eight Carat. This is one of the most outstanding families in the Studbook and includes champion racehorse Octagonal, his freakishly talented brother Mouawad, Kaapstad, Diamond Lover, Marquise, Viscount, Tristalove, Shower Of Roses, Viking Ruler, Don Eduardo, Deep Field and Shooting To Win. Godolphin confirmed that Astoria will be aimed at the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on 7 October.
