Baffert Under Microscope For Horse "Sudden Deaths"

Friday, 12th April 2013

In the US, leading California based Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has come under the microscope following the release of the California Horse Racing Board annual report, which detailed that 7 out of 11 (64 per cent) of horses who have died from a spiking "cardiac failure" figure during the last fiscal year were trained by the iconic conditioner, reports bloodhorse.com. Deaths relating to cardiac failure in California have risen from 4 in 2009 and 6 in 2011 to almost double this year. The CHRB is yet to formally release the identities of the 7 horses under notice and the rise in cardiac failure related deaths is concerning given its "relatively rare occurrence" in thoroughbreds. Putting the statistics into an Australian perspective, an 18-year study published in the Equine Veterinary Journal in 2010 recorded only 23 cardiac related deaths in Victoria and 16 in Sydney during that period. Necropsies on the 11 horses have yet to deduce a reason for the "rash of sudden deaths" with Dr. Francisco Uzal of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS) noting, "We have not been able to find the cause… We have done extensive toxicological studies. We have done, of course, all sort of other things – pathology and histology. We don't know what's going on."
