Tres Blue Aimed At Melbourne Cup

Friday, 27th June 2014

Round Table racing director Bruce Slade has confirmed the Melbourne Cup as the primary spring target for talented stayer Tres Blue, reports horseracing.com.au. The French-bred Tres Blue (Anabaa Blue-Tres Ravi, by Monsun) made his Australian debut in last year's Melbourne Cup at Flemington finishing over 50-lengths from the winner Fiorente after playing up in the mounting yard. The 4YO was then given a light autumn preparation where he finished 13th and 10th respectively in the Gr1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and Gr3 Japan Racing Association Plate in Sydney. Slade said trainer Gai Waterhouse was pleased with both performances. "He is really well," Slade said. "Last year he was just a three-year-old and from a notoriously late maturing family and he has come a long way in the twelve months that we have had him now." He added, "He has form around the likes of Cirrus Des Aigles; there is not a horse that has been able to beat Cirrus Des Aigles this season and he was able to do that as a three-year-old last season. Hopefully we can see that kind of form reproduced in the spring." Tres Blue is not expected to resume until August and Slade said that Waterhouse is yet to decide on the path that the Gr3 winner will follow during the spring. "The weights and things will decide whether we need to win races to get him into the Cup or whether we can just take him through a preparation that sort of culminates in the Melbourne Cup," Slade said.

"He is an elite class racehorse who is set to carry a very light weight in this year's Melbourne Cup. That has to make him a leading chance." Tres Blue, the winner of the Gr3 Prix de Reux & Gr3 Prix de Deauville at his last two outings, is guaranteed a start in the Melbourne Cup in which he has been allocated just 51kg. Keeneland Day-1: Top Buyer "Sees Opportunity"

Wednesday, 14th September 2011

Meanwhile Florida medical centre magnate & prominent Paso Fino owner-breeder Benjamin Leon finished Day-1 at Keeneland as the top buyer, purchasing 4 lots for US$3 million. Leon also “made a big splash at yearling auctions in 2010 when he purchased 2 sale-toppers: Global Response (by A.P.Indy) for US$1.2 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Auction & Mr Besilu (by A.P.Indy) for US$4.2 million at the Keeneland September Sale” noted bloodhorse.com. This year at Keeneland’s opening session, Leon (buying in the name of his Besilu Stables) paid: US$925,000 for a Street Cry-Hollywood Wildcat colt; US$775,000 for an Indian Charlie-Lu Ravi filly; US$775,000 for an A.P.Indy-Private Gift filly; & US$525,000 for a Distorted Humor-Words Of War colt. He explained: “I started (in the thoroughbred business) 3 years ago slowly, walking before jogging. I’m jogging now & I’m jogging before running. The plan is the same plan since I came out of the (starting) gate. It’s to try to assemble a group of fillies for a breeding herd with some colts. The colts that we’re buying are colts that in our opinion have the pedigree & the conformation to become good runners. We also want them to have the pedigree so that if they do become good runners, then they can be excellent stallions in the future. That’s the story behind the colts that we have purchased. We also are in the process of buying a group of fillies to enjoy at the racetrack, hopefully. They are very well bred, genetically & pedigree-wise, so that they will become broodmares at the farm (near Micanopy in Florida). They will be added to my broodmare band (currently 7 mares). I’ll be back in November at the Keeneland (breeding stock) sale to look at the weanlings & look at some of the broodmares. My passion is really breeding. . . . . . Right now I am breeding to race & in the future my intention is to participate in every area of the sport & the business. . . . . . Ultimately I want to end up with about 30 or 50 broodmares, somewhere around there, so we can produce somewhere between 25 & 40-some foals a year. We’ll have 25 broodmares for sure & then the rest we’ll get as we get into it & go along & start running instead of jogging.” Asked whether he was concerned about the global economic situation, Leon replied: “We all are very concerned about the economic crisis. We don’t know where the economy is going right now. But when things get as bad as they’ve gotten, I don’t think they can get any worse. When you’re all the way down, the only way you can go is up. What we’re doing right now, through the economic crisis, is kind of taking advantage of the opportunity. This crisis has opportunity. We’re getting our hands on some excellently – in our opinion – pedigreed horses & good, well put together horses. It’s a wonderful opportunity. Sooner or later, the economy is going to go up. . . . . . I have faith, like I think most of us have, in our country & I think thoroughbreds will turn the corner when the economy turns the corner. They’ll go back up, maybe not 100% to where they were at one point, but they will go back up to a very acceptable standard. In the meantime, right now, we’re capitalising on what we perceive as an opportunity.”

Keeneland Yearlings Day-1: US$775k Indian Charlie Filly

Tuesday, 13th September 2011

Ben Leon’s Besilu Stables also paid US$775,000 for a filly by Indian Charlie (out of multiple graded stakes-winning A.P.Indy mare Lu Ravi) consigned by Peter O’Callaghan’s Woods Edge Farm as agent for breeder Nagako Fujita. Leon told thoroughbredtimes.com: “I fell in love when I saw her. The pedigree is impeccable. She vetted out impeccably well. She just has good promise of becoming a very good racehorse, but definitely she should be a very, very good dam.” And O’Callaghan commented: “She certainly exceeded expectations. I think she’s definitely the best the mare’s had so far.”
