Perth's Peters Pike Pairing Popular Punters' Picks

Friday, 1st December 2017

Prominent Perth owner and breeder Bob Peters will go to bed tonight with a warranted sense of anticpation. The presence of his pink silks with white cross bands in any race held in WA often mean the opposition is running for place prizemoney only. While State Solicitor (see below) is the chalk for tomorrow's Gr1 Winterbottom Stakes, Peters has another three runners on the card, and each of them has genuine winning prospects. Royal Star and La Mouline justifiably dominate the market for Race 2, with gun jockey William Pike opting to ride the former despite being aboard the latter for each of his last three wins. Pike also has the ride on odds-on Race 3 favourite Bold Success before the owner and jockey combine again in the day's feature event. The trio of runners is prepared by trainers Grant and Alana Williams.

Aust-Bred Arena Son Wins Singapore Gr3

Monday, 25th February 2008

Also in Singapore, Lomar Park Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Arena (Danehill-Lee's Bid, by Tawfiq) added a group success when Australian-bred 4YO gelding Top Spin (Arena-Gas, by Strategic) scored a 0.75-length victory in the S$200,000 (A$160,000) Gr3 Singapore 4YO Mile (1600m) at Kranji. Favourite Top Spin (ridden by Saimee Jumaat for Kiwi trainer Laurie Laxon) defeated the 4YO geldings Royal Star (Danske-Ramila, by Beechcraft) & fellow Australian-bred Watch The Crab (Eternity Range-Sense Of Style). At his previous start Top Spin won Singapore's Gr3 Three Rings Trophy (1400m) at Kranji on February 9; overall he now boasts 10 wins & 6 placings (including all 3 legs of Singapore's 2007 3YO Challenge, plus November's Gr1 Singapore Gold Cup over 2200m) from 16 starts for just under S$900,000 (A$720,000) prize-money.

Thunder Gulch Adds Singapore Gr3

Tuesday, 4th December 2007

In Singapore, Gr1 Kentucky Derby-winning Coolmore shuttler Thunder Gulch (Gulch-Line Of Thunder, by Storm Bird) added a group success when Australian-bred 7YO Recast (Thunder Gulch-Abonnement, by Marauding) recorded the fastest mile ever run on the Kranji track (despite lumping 59kg) in winning the S$200,000 (A$160,000) Gr3 Committee's Prize (1600m). The win followed last month's victory by Recast (an $80,000 yearling at the 2002 Magic Millions Premier Sale on the Gold Coast) in the Gr1 Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) at Kranji. Recast (ridden by Robbie Fradd for NZ trainer Laurie Laxon) came from well back in the field with a sharp sprint in the straight to clock 1min 34.7sec & score by a half-length from 4YO gelding Royal Star (Danske-Ramila, by Beechcraft) & 5YO gelding Mr Line (Llers Fitz-Miss Maleva, by Mirfak). Prior to arriving in Singapore, Recast (a half-brother to stakes-winning sire prospect Gonski) raced 3 times as a 2YO in Australia for Lloyd Williams, notching 2 wins (at Sale & Sandown) after an unplaced debut at Caulfield. Overall he now has 10 wins & 6 placings from 34 starts for over A$1.6 million earnings; he also won 2005's Singapore Gr2 E.W.Baker Trophy (1400m) but was then off-the-scene for 12 months, before returning in October 2006 to win the Gr1 Kranji Mile (1600m) & this season also finishing runner-up in September's Gr3 Jumbo Jet Trophy (1400m).

Carry The Flag Adds Singapore Gr3

Tuesday, 9th January 2007

In Singapore, Lyndhurst Stud sire Carry The Flag (Tenby-Tamassos, by Dance In Time) added a group success when 1st-crop daughter Royal Smile (Carry The Flag-Lucys Loot, by Star Of The Magi) grabbed a dramatic victory in a 3-way photo-finish to the S$200,000 (A$160,000) Gr Singapore 3YO Sprint (1200m) at Kranji. Royal Smile (ridden by Australian jockey Noel Callow for expatriate Kiwi trainer Laurie Laxon) miraculously managed to fly-jump over a fallen rival Majesticardo (which broke his off-fore leg 100m from the wining post) & duly scored by a neck from fast-finishing stable-mate Royal Star (Danske-Ramila, by Beechcraft) with a further neck to Safety Outlet (Favorite Trick-Safety Valve, by Air De France). Royal Smile (whose unraced dam Lucys Loot was purchased by Lyndhurst Stud for just $3,250 at the 2002 Magic Millions Winter Thoroughbred Sale) now has 4 wins & 4 placings for S$251,662 (A$200,000) earnings. Winning sire Carry The Flag won the 1999 Singapore Gold Cup.
