At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Arrowfield Stud's incumbent Champion Australian Sire Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) added a Group race success when 5YO Australian-bred gelding Redzel (Snitzel-Millrich, by Rubiton) showed his class when scoring a track record win in the $500,000 Gr2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) for 3YO+, defeating Jungle Edge & Super Too. Redzel improved his record to 12 wins (including The Everest, Gr1 Darley Classic, Gr1 Doomben 10,000, Gr2 Shorts, Gr3 Concorde Stakes, Gr3 Hall Mark Stakes, Gr3 Heath Stakes & Listed Fireball Stakes) and 6 placings (including the Gr1 ATC Galaxy Handicap, Gr2 Shorts, Gr2 ATC Challenge Stakes & Gr3 ATC Kindergarten Stakes) from 23 starts for $8,221,750 in earnings. Co-trainer Paul Snowden said Redzel would not race again until the $2.5 million Gr1 weight-for-age TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 7 April. "I was thinking about the William Reid but the TJ is the one we really want to win," Snowden told Sky Racing. "He's such as easy horse to prepare, we know what to do with him. A barrier trial in between should have him at the mark." Redzel, who is out of Gr3 Sweet Embrace Stakes winner & Golden Slipper placegetter Millrich, was a $120,000 purchase by Triple Crown Syndications at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Marquee Stud. He was originally sold for $45,000 at the 2013 Inglis Australian Bloodstock Select Weanling Sale.
At Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, Arrowfield Stud's incumbent Champion Australian Sire Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) added a Group race success when 4YO bay mare Snitty Kitty (Snitzel-Lassiter's Cat, by Tale of the Cat) put on an exhibition of brilliant sustained speed when scoring a dominant win in the $200,000 Gr2 Caulfield Sprint (1000m) for 3YO+, defeating Super Too & Faatinah. A $175,000 yearling consigned by Willow Park at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, Snitty Kitty improved her record to 6 wins (including the Listed Lightning Handicap) & 3 placings from 11 starts for $385,785 in earnings. Trainer Henry Dwyer was full of praise for Snitty Kitty who set a new race record of 56.28 seconds. "I've never had a horse simply improve out of nowhere like her," Dwyer told racing.com. "Usually the good horses show something to start but we started on a very low base with her." Dwyer said Snitty Kitty was now likely to head to the spelling paddock with Gr1 goals in mind for the autumn. "There's not a lot left for her this spring as we don't want to push her out to 1200 metres and the Oakleigh Plate really looks the race for her to win a Group 1," he said. "She's by no means found her mark yet…she's very dynamic and untapped."
Despite accepting to run in both the Gr2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick tomorrow and the Gr3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) in Canberra on Sunday, it seems more likely that the highly thought of Choisir colt will take his place in the nation's Capital. That's despite drawing a wide pole for the Black Opal. According to horseracing.com.au, co-trainer Peter Snowden, who also has Gr1 Golden Slipper joint favourite Capitalist accepted for the Todman, Defcon's Randwick entry was just a precation. From his only two starts to date, Defcon has finished runner-up in the Gr3 Canonbury Stakes (1200m) & Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) – both at Rosehill Gardens. Toghest to beat for Defcon are likely to be Dieters, Prized Icon and Super Too.
