Top Hong Kong Debut By Eagle Way

Tuesday, 13th December 2016

Queensland Derby winner Eagle Way made an auspicious start to his Hong Kong racing career when resuming with a strong win at Sha Tin on Sunday. Trainer John Moore said Eagle Way (More Than Ready-Wedgetail Eagle, by Lure) would follow the same path as reigning Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther by targeting next season's Hong Kong Derby. Ridden by champion Australian jockey Hugh Bowman, the 4YO surged through a gap at the 200m mark to score by a head in the Class 2 Eishin Preston Handicap over 1600 metres. "He is just an out-and-out stayer this guy," Moore told the South China Morning Post. "The mile is a minimum requirement for him, and it was a great sign for him to run like that first-up." A $200,000 weanling purchase by George Moore Bloodstock from the draft of Segenhoe Stud at the 2014 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale, Eagle Way is a half-brother to the stakes-winners Assertive Eagle, Impressive Eagle & Soaressa, herself the dam of dual Gr3 winner Thermal Current.

Stud Plans Abandoned For Fast 'N' Rocking

Friday, 11th July 2014

Trainer David Hayes has confirmed that well-bred 3YO Fast 'N' Rocking (Fastnet Rock-For the Good Times, by Hennessy) has been gelded, ending the dreams of connections who were hoping he would one day embark on a stud career, reports racingvictoria.net.au. Hayes said it was a tough decision given Fast 'N' Rocking was Gr1 placed at two and a Gr3 winner at three, but said it was ultimately a commercial decision. "It was (a tough decision), because he's a Group-winning Fastnet Rock, but we floated him out on the market and we thought we could win more (money) with him than he was going to get at stud," Hayes said. Fast 'N' Rocking first emerged as a stallion prospect during his juvenile season when he finished second to Miracles of Life in the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes and fifth in the Golden Slipper. His biggest win thus far came last spring when defeating Prince Harada and Thermal Current in the Gr3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. Hayes said is he hoping Fast 'N' Rocking can be a force in the some of the feature races over the spring carnival. "I just want to get him back into form and get him trying," Hayes said. "But I'm hoping he might develop into a horse that will run well over Cup week." By Fastnet Rock from the stakes-winning Hennessy mare For The Good Times, Fast 'N' Rocking hails from the family of Australian Oaks winner Just Now and South Australian Derby winner Shiva's Revenge, who was also runner-up to Let's Elope in the 1991 Melbourne Cup.

This was the first of many more stakes victories to come for the untapped Not Listenin'tome who boosted his record to 3 wins and 2 placings (including the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes behind Zoustar & the Gr3 Telstra Phonewords Stakes) from 5 starts for $227,000 earnings. Not Listenin'tome was purchased by leading Hong Kong trainer John Moore for $270,000 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud. Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told TVN the stable would "take each race as it comes" with the rising star. "That was really just an easy exhibition gallop," Hawkes said, before adding the 3YO would "probably go back to Sydney" for the remainder of his autumn campaign. Jockey James McDonald, who was having his first ride aboard Not Listenin'tome, said he gave him the feel of an elite racehorse. "He's an unbelievable racehorse. He was devastating today. He's one out of the box so hopefully I can stick with him."

Bookies Can't Split Diamond Duo

Wednesday, 20th February 2013

Meanwhile, with Miracles of Life drawing barrier 1, and challenger Guelph pratted out where she'll need to look for cover from barrier 13, bookmakers still don't seem able to split the 2YO duo, offering around $3.40 the pair of them for Saturday's Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield (1200m). Guelph's stable companion Mestasio, who fared little better with the 12 marble, is the third elect at $6.50 ahead of the Peter Moody-trained Thermal Current (6) at $7.50. Scratched from last week's Inglis Premier at Mornington when favourite, Crack A Roadie (9) with Craig Williams in the irons, appears good each way value at $21.

Exceed And Excel Extends Authority

Monday, 18th February 2013

It has been, by any standards, an astonishing couple of weeks for Darley stallion Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond), sire of Gr1 winners Helmet, Reward For Effort, Margot Did & Excelebration. Following 4YO mare Cathay Lady's Belle of the Turf Stakes win at Gosford last month, news out of Hong Kong suggests that unraced 3YO You Read My Mind is 'one out of the box'. However, it's Exceed And Excel's 2YOs in Australia that have really got tongues wagging over the past few weeks. His headline acts include Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude (fillies) winner Guelph, Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude (c&g) winner Kuroshio, Listed Widden Stakes winner & Golden Slipper favourite Overreach, Perth Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Camporella, plus Listed Blue Diamond Preview (c&g) placed Thermal Current.
