Size Breaks HK Record

Tuesday, 27th June 2017

Expatriate Australian trainer John Size set a new Hong Kong record for most wins in a season when injury plagued but highly talented sprinter Thewizardofoz landed the Gr3 Premier Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday. Crowned champion Griffin during his 2YO season, the son of Redoute's Choice and champion NZ mare Princess Coup (Encosta de Lago) broke through for an overdue stakes victory when powering home to give Size his 92nd winner for the season, eclipsing the previous mark of 91 set by Tony Cruz in 2004-05. "It has been a season when I had a good group of horses and things came to together for them all at the same time and that allowed quite a few to win multiple races," Size told the South China Morning Post. "That's how these types of records are broken but it isn't something that happens very often that way." Size is hopeful that Sunday's win can be the catalyst for Thewizardofoz to now progress through the grades. "I am happy to be patient if I think it's the best thing for the horse, that's always been what I've done," he said. "…now we might be able to see the best of Thewizardofoz next season."

Thewizardofoz Continues On Winning Way

Tuesday, 23rd June 2015

Boom Hong Kong sprinter Thewizardofoz maintained his unbeaten record when posting another highly impressive victory at Sha Tin on Sunday. The beautifully bred son of Redoute's Choice and 4-time Gr1 winner Princess Coup took his record to 3 wins from 3 starts when scoring a facile 3.5-length win in a Class 3 over 1200m. Brazilian-born superstar jockey Joao Moreira said the blue blooded 3YO was even more impressive on his third outing. "I loved his first two wins but I was even more impressed today," Moreira told the South China Morning Post. "The track had become really sloppy by his race but he still quickened and ran away. We went forward today unlike the first two runs, but it didn't take him more than a couple of seconds to work out what he was supposed to do and he relaxed and waited for me to say go and found another two or three gears." Thewizardofoz is the second foal for Encosta de Lago mare Princess Coup, winner of the Kelt Capital Stakes (twice), New Zealand Oaks, and Stoney Bridge Stakes. Thewizardofoz was bred by Tony Bott and the Siu family at Evergreen Stud, and is raced by Martin Siu Kim-sum who paid $3 million in 2009 for Princess Coup. The Redoute's Choice x Encosta de Lago cross is so far responsible for five stakeswinners (Musir, Beneteau, Burnstone, Peeping & Essington) among 24 runners. Princess Coup, also dam of Sydney winner Vanilla Princess, has a 2YO filly by Redoute's Choice, a yearling colt and a weanling filly by Fastnet Rock and is in foal to Snitzel.

Size Excited By Thewizardofoz

Tuesday, 2nd June 2015

Meanwhile, boom Hong Kong galloper Thewizardofoz looked a top-class sprinter in the making when maintaining his unbeaten record at Sha Tin on Sunday. The beautifully bred son of Redoute's Choice and 4-time Gr1 winner Princess Coup took his record to 2 wins from as many starts when scoring a comprehensive Class Three victory in a time that was only fractionally slower than the A-graders in the Gr3 Sha Tin Vase on the same card. Thewizardofoz's winning time was 1:08.69 (1200m), while Not Listenin'tome recorded 1:08.47 in landing the Vase. "And he carried a little more weight than the Group Three winner doing it, so he's run the clock, visually it was self-explanatory and you couldn't say there was too much wrong with that," trainer John Size told the South China Morning Post. "In saying that, he had a sweet run through the race and the pace set up very well for him and he was expected to win but he ran on as you would hope and you couldn't really ask for more than he did." Size said that Thewizardofoz would probably run once more before a summer break. "We'll have a look at him in a couple of days and see how he is but he'll still be in Class Three so he might run again," he said. "I think Class Two is asking too much of the young horses at this stage but Class Three he should be OK to run again." Thewizardofoz is the second foal for Encosta de Lago mare Princess Coup, winner of the Kelt Capital Stakes (twice), New Zealand Oaks, and Stoney Bridge Stakes.
