The world class catalogue for next week's Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale has been boosted with two outstanding late entries for the sale. Courgette, the dam of Golden Slipper heroine She Will Reign, and recent stakes winning filly Torvill, are additions to a star-studded supplementary catalogue. Consigned by Yarraman Park Stud, Courgette will head to the sale in foal to superstar sire I Am Invincible in just her fifth season at stud. Courgette (Charge Forward) has had her past two yearlings by Shamus Award and Time for War sell for $425,000 and $325,000 respectively. She Will Reign, her first foal, won the Golden Slipper at two before training on to capture the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley in a thrilling finish. As it stands, She Will Reign boasts a record of six wins from 11 starts and earnings of over $3.2 million. Courgette will go under the hammer as the last lot on Thursday May 31, following the originally catalogued lots and the supplementary of broodmares. Recent Doomben stakes winning 3YO Torvill will go under the hammer next Tuesday after joining the Blue Sky Premium Consignment draft this week. By Not a Single Doubt, Torvill won the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet at Doomben on April 28. She had earlier won the listed Reginald Allen Handicap at Randwick. Torvill will go under the hammer as the last lot on Tuesday May 29, following the originally catalogued lots and the supplementary of race fillies and maiden mares including Jameka. The 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale commences today (Thursday) with the first of two days of the National Weanling Sale. The auction kicks off at 10am (AEST).
The Chris Waller yard is hoping progressive filly Another Dollar (Ocean Park-Make A Wish, by Pins) can turn the tables on her last start conqueror Torvill in tomorrow's Gr2 Magic Millions The Roses (2000m) at Doomben. The New Zealand-bred Another Dollar was a close second to the Group 1-performed Torvill when the pair clashed in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1630m) two weeks ago, but the former's effort in defeat was admirable after using up plenty of energy early. "One thing is we won't be going forward and using her up," Waller's Queensland stable manager Paul Shailer told AAP. "Our aim is the Queensland Oaks in two weeks time. We want to have a filly left for that race and we won't have if she is given a tough run up on the pace." Shailer added: "Don't forget she has had only five runs but she just keeps improving." Another Dollar, who drawn barrier 15, is currently a $6 chance with TAB, while Torvill, who has come up with gate 18, is the favourite at $4.40. The Roses is the traditional lead-up Gr1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben on 26 May.
At Doomben in Brisbane, Arrowfield Stud's multiple stakes-winning stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice-Single's Bar, by Rory's Jester) added a black-type success when 3YO filly Torvill (Not A Single Doubt-Bolero Queen, by Iglesia) scored by 1.3-lengths for trainer Clarry Conners in the Listed $125,000 Set Weight Gold Coast Bracelet (1630m) for 3YO fillies, defeating Another Dollar & Improvise. One of the most promising sophomore fillies in training (her last three feature placings were behind Alizee, Shoals and Luvaluva), Torvill's extreme barrier did not deter her supporters. Forced to race wide as a result of the barrier, Torvill ambled around her opposition at the top of the straight and strolled to the softest of wins. Recording her second stakes victory, the well-bred filly has now had 3 wins (including the Listed Reginald Allen Handicap) & 5 placings (inlcuding the Gr1 Surround Stakes, Gr2 Light Fingers Stakes & Gr3 Kembla Grange Classic) from 15 starts for $377,115 earnings.
At Kembla Grange near Wollongong, Windsor Park Stud's 4-time Gr1-winning shuttler & former European Champion 2YO Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer-Starlight Dreams, by Black Tie Affair) added a Group race success when 3YO New Zealand-bred filly Luvaluva (Mastercraftsman-Wansesingyee, by Galileo) charged home from the rear of the field for an eye-catching win in the $200,000 Gr3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) for 3YO fillies, defeating Torvill & Wedgie. A $55,000 purchase by her trainer John Sargent at the 2016 NZB Ready To Run Sale of 2YOs, Luvaluva improved her record to 3 wins (including the Gr2 Wakeful Stakes) and 1 placing from 9 starts for $385,850 in earnings. Luvaluva, who hails from the family of Gr3 Emancipation Stakes winner Almazyoon and Preakness Stakes & Belmont Stakes winner Little Current, firmed from $8 into $6 for next month's Gr1 Australian Oaks in Sydney.
At Randwick's bumper feature day in Sydney, Coolmore's former Gr1-winning Champion Australian Sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill-Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) celebrated an elite race success when blue-blooded 3YO filly Shoals (Fastnet Rock-The Broken Shore, by Hussonet) showed gritty determination to win by a half-length for trainer Anthony Freedman in the $500,000 Surround Stakes (1400m) for 3YO fillies, defeating Torvill & dead-heaters Rimraam and Shumook. Astonishingly, albeit she had failed as a short-priced favourite at her race return in Melbourne's Gr3 Kevin Hayes Stakes, impeccably performed Shoals was allowed to go off at around $14, a price she swiftly made a mockery of. Owned by Arrowfield Pastoral and Pinecliff Racing, the superb effort by Shoals provides her with the exceptional record of 6 wins (including the Gr1 Myer Classic, Gr2 ATC Percy Sykes Stakes, Gr3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes & Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes) & 2 placings (including the Gr1 Thousand Guineas) from 9 starts for $1,362,150 earnings. Bred by John Messara's Arrowfield Stud, who race her in partnership with Jonathan Munz's Pinecliff Racing, Shoals is by Fastnet Rock out of the valuable mare The Broken Shore (Hussonet), a daughter of outstanding producer Shantha's Choice. A $1.9 million purchase by Munz at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale from the Teeley Assets Dispersal, The Broken Shore is a half-sister to Arrowfield's multiple champion Australian sire Redoute's Choice, Gr1 winners Platinum Scissors & Manhattan Rain, Gr3 winner Sliding Cube and stakes-winner Echoes of Heaven. According to dailytelegraph.com.au, John Messara revealed, "I'd love to take her to Royal Ascot for a race like the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. She loves soft ground and has already proven herself at Group 1 level against older horses. We could even look at the July Cup at Newmarket, too."
At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Arrowfield Stud's multiple stakes-winning stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute's Choice-Single's Bar, by Rory's Jester) added a black-type success when 3YO bay filly Torvill (Not A Single Doubt-Bolero Queen, by Iglesia) opened her stakes account courtesy of a fast-finishing win in the $125,000 Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m) for 3YO fillies, defeating fellow fillies Yulong Xingsheng & Workdrinks. Torvill, who hails from the family of Queensland Derby winner Ruthven and multiple Group winning sprinter Cangronde, improved her record to 2 wins and 3 placings from 8 starts for $116,715 in earnings.
