Trap For Fools Joins Weir Yard

Wednesday, 23rd May 2018

Talented West Australian stayer Trap For Fools is set to make his Victorian debut in the next few weeks after joining the Darren Weir stable, reports the West Australian. Trainer Lindsey Smith recommended the move to owner Geoff Evans after a stellar spring & summer campaign in which Trap For Fools won 8 of 10 starts. Among those wins were three stakes victories, namely the Listed Tattersall's Cup (2100m), Listed GA Towton Cup (2200m), and Listed ATA Stakes (2200m). "Lindsey told me it would be the best move to send him to Darren," said Evans. "They've got a great relationship and Darren's a master trainer." Evans added: "He trialled really well [when winning a 1450m trial at Lark Hill] and Jarrod [McLean, Weir's Warrnambool foreman] said he's settled in well. We don't have any firm plans. I'll leave that up to Darren." Trap For Fools is by Poet's Voice out of the Old Spice mare Old Money, winner of the Gr1 West Australian Derby & Gr2 West Australian Oaks.

A winner of the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, Poet's Voice (Dubawi-Bright Tiara, by Chief's Crown) has hitherto sired 13 individual stakes winners including Poet's Word, winner of the Gr3 Glorious Stakes and runner up in both the Gr1 British and Irish Champion Stakes, Gr2 ATC Roman Consul Stakes winner Viridine, Gr3 winner Poet's Vanity, Australian Listed winning filly My Country, and highly promising WA stayer and multiple stakes winner Trap For Fools. Saeed bin Suroor, who trained Poet's Voice, said: "I am very sad to hear of the death of Poet's Voice and my condolences go to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and everyone connected to him at Darley. He was a pleasure to train, always relaxed in his work and gave his best throughout his career. His victory in the QEII Stakes was very special indeed."

Trap For Fools Wins Listed ATA Stakes

Thursday, 21st December 2017

At Ascot racecourse in Perth, Darley's Gr1-winning shuttler Poet's Voice (Dubawi-Bright Tiara, by Chief's Crown) added a black-type success when 4YO Australian-bred gelding Trap For Fools (Poet's Voice-Old Money, by Old Spice) outstayed his rivals with a strong front-running performance in the $100,000 Listed ATA Stakes (2200m) for 3YO+, defeating Dark Alert & Not Again Ken. Trap For Fools confirmed his status as the most promising stayer in Western Australia with his third successive stakes victory that boosted his record to 10 wins (including the Listed GA Towton Cup & Listed Tattersall's Cup) and 5 placings from 21 starts for $340,280 in earnings. Trainer Lindsey Smith confirmed that Trap For Fools is likely to back up in the Gr2 Ted van Heemst Stakes (2100m) at Ascot on Saturday. His primary target remains the Gr2 Perth Cup (2400m) on 1 January. "As is stands today, yes. He has been up a long time, he can now spend a couple of days down at the beach, and Friday afternoon if he is happy, the vet checks him and makes sure he is okay then he will run,” Smith told ANZ Bloodstock News. "His heart rate is amazing, he has a lot of depth to him." Trap For Fools now doubt derives a lot of his stamina from his dam Old Money, winner of the Gr1 West Australian Derby & Gr2 West Australian Oaks.

Bold Plan for Trap For Fools

Tuesday, 19th December 2017

Trainer Lindsey Smith is considering a bold plan to run Perth Cup favourite Trap For Fools in two stakes races in the space of a week, reports the West Australian. Smith confirmed that Trap For Fools will start in tomorrow's Listed ATA Stakes (2200m) at Ascot, and that he may back up in the Gr2 Ted van Heemst Stakes (2100m) on Saturday. His primary target remains the Gr2 Perth Cup (2400m) on 1st January. "We'll go to the first one and see how he pulls up, but at this stage he'll go around in both," Smith said. "He would have a hard gallop on Wednesday whether it was in a race or at home. I've done it in the past with success and not many horses come along like this one." Smith added: "If he doesn't come up for Saturday we'll just wait for the Perth Cup. On Saturday he has to race against Group 1 performers at equal weights, which won't be easy." Trap For Fools (Poet's Voice-Old Money, by Old Spice) has stamped himself as the most exciting young stayer in West Australia after scoring successive stakes wins in the Listed Tattersall's Cup (2100m) and Listed GA Towton Cup (2200m) at his past two outings.
