At Trentham in New Zealand, Cambridge Stud's deceased multiple champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) added a Group race success when grey 5YO New Zealand-bred gelding Von Tunzelman (Zabeel-J'Adane, by Danehill) finishing full of running to claim the second stakes win of his career in the $70,000 Gr3 Trentham Stakes (2100m) for 3YO+, defeating Devise & Benzini. Australian Options Under Consideration For Smart Stayer

Thursday, 24th August 2017

Roger James is looking at Australian options for his stakes-winning stayer Von Tunzelman, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Cambridge trainer has yet to lock in the lightly-raced grey’s Spring programme, which will be firmed up after his first domestic appearance. “He’s come back well and I’ll look to step him out over 1400 metres once there is improvement in the tracks. That will hopefully be in the next two or three weeks and then we’ll decide about Australia, be it Sydney or Melbourne.” Raced by breeders Brendan and Jo Lindsay, Von Tunzelman has won four of his 11 starts including the Listed Kaimai Stakes at Matamata in February. The son of deceased multiple Champion Cambridge Stud sire Zabeel and Gr1 performer J’Adane finished a creditable sixth in the Gr1 New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie. Von Tunzelman enjoyed a hit-out at the Avondale trials on Tuesday and, despite the Heavy 10 going, he finished runner-up over 1000m.

Gold Cup Beckons Promising Stayer

Wednesday, 22nd March 2017

Progressive Kiwi galloper Von Tunzelman may make one more appearance before the conclusion of his current campaign, reports NZ racing Desk. "I might have a look at the Awapuni Gold Cup and that would be it," trainer Roger James said. The 4YO grey-hued son of Zabeel has made impressive progress this preparation with a Listed win in the Kaimai Stakes two runs back before finishing a respectable sixth in last Thursday's Gr1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie. "He had to cover a bit of extra ground to get into the race so I thought his run was all right," James said. Meanwhile, another smart 4YO in the stable is Romantic Maid who runs in Saturday's Gr2 Windsor Park Stud Japan/NZ International Trophy.

Gr1 Test for Promising Son of Zabeel

Thursday, 16th March 2017

Meanwhile, progressive Kiwi galloper Von Tunzelman (Zabeel-J'Adane, by Danehill) faces the toughest test of his short career when he makes his Gr1 debut in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie today, reports NZ Racing Desk. "He's not well off at weight-for-age and is still a bit green and immature, but he's an up and comer and a fit horse," his rider Leith Innes said. Trained by Roger James for breeder-owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay, Von Tunzelman has won four of his 10 starts with his most recent outing resulting in a strong win in the Listed Kaimai Stakes (2000m) at Matamata. Innes acknowledged the significant step up in class facing Von Tunzelman and he said it was only a matter of time before the grey-hued 4YO made his mark at the top level. "Regardless of what he does this week, he should be knocking on the door in these sorts of races next year," he said. By champion sire Zabeel, Von Tunzelman is the second foal to race from former smart racemare J'Adane (Danehill), who was placed three times at Gr1 level in the Mudgway Stakes (behind champion Kiwi mare Seachange) & Kelt Capital Stakes (behind Princess Coup) in New Zealand, as well as the Gr1 Winter Stakes (behind Nova Star) in Queensland.

At Matamata in New Zealand, Cambridge Stud's deceased multiple Champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) added a black-type success when 4YO grey gelding Von Tunzelman (Zabeel-J'Adane, by Danehill) displayed his superior staying talent when scoring by 0.5 length for trainer Roger James in the $50,000 Listed Kaimai Stakes (2000m) for 3YO+, over 4YO mare Fanatic (Shocking-Komplete Klass, by Groom Dancer) & 8YO gelding Cruiser (Captain Rio-Morton Babe, by Orpen). James Adopting Long-Term View

Friday, 29th July 2016

Roger James is looking at longer-term Australian goals for several members of his Cambridge stable, reports NZ Racing Desk. "I have a lovely bunch of horses that are well above average and capable of footing it in Australia," James said. "My preference is to develop these horses, focus on Sydney in the autumn and go from there." One such horse is the talented rising 4YO mare Romantic Maid (High Chaparral). "Romantic Maid is proven in good three-year-old company in Sydney and I can see her being competitive again over 1600 to 2000 metres," James said. "Likewise Tavy, who has multiple black-type placings locally is up to Australian racing standard and I will bring her up later in the spring with Sydney in the autumn in mind." Winners Jessabeel and Von Tunzelman, the maidens Amazing Lady and Arundel and the unraced Killarney have also been shortlisted for the trip.
