Champion US galloper Arrogate (Unbridled's Song-Bubbler, by Distorted Humor) has drawn the inside gate for his career swansong in Saturday's US$6 million Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic (10 furlongs) at Del Mar. Arrogate will be retired to owner Prince Khalid's Juddmonte Farms after the Breeders' Cup, bring the curtain down on a brief but spectacular career. Currently rated the world's best racehorse, Arrogate as hitherto won 7 of his 10 starts for career earnings of US$17,298,514, making him the richest North American thoroughbred of all time. Meanwhile, Arrogate's biggest Danger, Gun Runner (barrier 5), comes into the Classic in career-best form having claimed Group 1 wins at his last three outings in the Stephen Foster Handicap, Whitney Stakes, and Woodward Stakes. That superb vein of form has seen bookmakers install the son of Candy Ride as the 9-5 early favourite, ahead of Arrogate at 2-1. "Well, I know whose side I'm on and I feel very good about where we're at right now," trainer Steve Asmussen told Thoroughbred Daily News. "What has happened since the World Cup is surprising to a lot of people. We're just trying to get to the Classic in the best shape possible and prove where Gun Runner is at." He's a very well-balanced horse and a very good mover." He added: "He's a nice type and he was still green when he got to the front. I'd say he'll improve again." War Decree holds several big race entries including the Gr1 National Stakes at The Curragh on 11 September.
