A fortnight ago at Pakenham, a 3YO colt turned many a head with a facile 2.25-lengths maiden win over 1000m where he finished with a wet sail. Trainer Robert Smerdon has wasted no time in getting Superhard to the city, with the All Too Hard son immediately tackling a much tougher assignment in today's opening race at Sandown over the same distance. At face value he looks like he's going to appreciate a step up in trip, so the question is how he'll fare over the 1000m against the likes of Written Choice who was very impressive over this course and distance when winning on debut. Waiting in the wings should either falter are Wait For No One from the in-form Team Hayes & Dabernig stable, and Fully Maxed who ran a bottler behind Jukebox in the Vain Stakes. And then there's Bel Sonic, whose formlines from just two starts are ominous. Winning second-up at Geelong over 1100m when a short-priced favourite, he was beaten less than two lengths at Pakenham over 1200m on debut by last start Gr3 winner Merchant Navy, who'd start deep in the red if he was running here.
