Review Of Funding To 52 NZ Tracks

Friday, 2nd June 2006

Also during the northern regional forum in Hamilton, NZ Thoroughbred Racing board chairman Guy Sargent "assured the audience there were no plans to close racecourses", but confirmed there will be "a strategic review undertaken of all racecourses in NZ," reported thoroughbrednews.co.nz. Sargent summed up: "The reality is that we can no longer afford to fund all 52 racecourses we presently have in NZ & we are not going to." Sargent added a number of strategic horse training centres will also be identified as part of this venue review process & funds allocated accordingly for this purpose. And NZTR chief executive Paul Bittar said the possibility of having all-weather galloping tracks in NZ will be investigated, noting the "frequency of abandoning race-meetings in NZ was proving very costly for the galloping code".
