UK Tracks Welcome Proposed Casinos

Friday, 2nd June 2006

In the UK, "racecourses across Britain have welcomed the possibility of 1 of 17 new casinos opening in their vicinity, following the Government's announcement of a short-list of local authorities vying for the new ventures," reported racingpost.co.uk. The recently-passed Gambling Act allows 3 new types of casino to be operated "including Britain's 1st Las Vegas-style super-casino" (a single facility offering up to 1,250 unlimited jackpot gaming machines). Newcastle is 1 of 8 competing proposals short-listed for the super-casino & racetrack executive director David Williamson commented: "We have to make the racing more attractive & competitive & that means facilities & everything. I welcome any new casinos as they will attract people from outside the region & hopefully a few high rollers might take in a race meeting while they're here." Glasgow is another venue which could host the super-casino & chief executive Alistair Warwick at nearby Hamilton racetrack noted: "Hopefully we can do some business with a new casino, bringing their high rollers to us."
