Friday, 2nd June 2006

Racing Victoria chairman Graham Duff welcomed the State Government's budget announcement establishing a Racing Industry Development Program (to provide $18.6 million to the racing industry over the next 2 years, including an additional $1.8 million per annum to assist funding strategic projects & programs involving capital works, research & industry development). Duff said the racing industry is "1 of Victoria's biggest employers & contributors to the state's economy & the new Program will provide important funding support for improving that position", noting: "The racing industry in Victoria is a community-based sport with more than 120,000 people involved as an employee or participant. One in 5 Victorian residents attends the races each year. It generates an economic benefit to the state in excess of $2.1 billion & is recognised internationally for the quality & integrity of its racing, the professionalism of its administration & the spectacle of its major events. We look forward to working with the government in implementing the Program to help us in achieving our goal of building on Victorian racing's position as a world leader."
