Monday, 5th June 2006

Hot favourite & last year's US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Shirocco (Monsun-So Sedulous, by The Minstrel) added a 1.75-lengths victory in the £250,000 (A$600,000) Gr1 Coronation Cup (12 furlongs) for 4YOs & up at Epsom Downs. Shirocco (ridden by Christophe Soumillon for trainer Andre Fabre) defeated Lord Derby's 5YO multiple Gr1-winning mare Ouija Board (Cape Cross-Selection Board, by Welsh Pageant) & Gr3-winner Enforcer (Efisio-Tarneem, by Zilzal). Bred by Baron Georg Von Ullman in Germany, 5YO entire Shirocco (formerly trained by Andreas Schutz) won Germany's 2004 Gr1 Deutsches Derby at Hamburg & then defeated subsequent Gr1 Dubai World Cup victor Electrocutionist in Italy's 2004 Gr1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club; last year he finished 3rd in France's Gr2 Prix Foy at Longchamp in September & then 4th in the Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on October 2 before travelling to the US for his Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf triumph on October 29. In his seasonal debut this year, he won the UK Gr2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket by 3.5-lengths last start on May 7; overall he now has 6 wins from 11 starts.
