National Spirit Wins SAf Gr1 Gold Challenge

In South Africa, front-running 4YO gelding National Spirit (National Emblem-Meretrix, by Model Man) kicked clear at the top of the straight for a 2.25-lengths win in the R600,000 (A$120,000) weight-for-age Gr1 Gold Challenge (1600m) at Clairwood in Durban, reported SAHorseracing.com. National Spirit (ridden by Anton Marcus for trainer Dominic Zaki) defeated fast-finishing Gr2-winning 3YO & odds-on favourite Kapil (Jallad-Outstanding Star, by Bletchingly) & Australian-bred Sushisan (Fuji Kiseki-Meine Tochter, by Bataan). National Spirit was a R70,000 (A$14,000) yearling; overall he now boasts 8 wins & 12 placings from 22 starts for R1,484,625 (A$296,000) earnings. His sire National Emblem (by National Assembly) is a multiple Gr1-winning miler who began his stud career at Summerhill in KwaZulu-Natal, before moving last season to Klawervlei Stud near Robertson in the Cape.
