MM Mares Day-1: $1.6m Surrealist
Coolmore Stud's Australian manager Michael Kirwan (acting on behalf of Tom Magnier) out-bid Hunter Valley bloodstock agent Tony Bott & paid a sale record $1.6 million for 9YO mare Surrealist (Kenny's Best Pal-Sunset Beach, by Kenmare) during yesterday's opening session of the 5-day Broodmare Section at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Queensland Gold Coast. Surrealist (consigned by Oaklands Stud as agent) was sold in foal to Fastnet Rock. She is the dam of boom multiple Gr1-winning 3YO gelding Racing To Win (by Encosta De Lago) who made it twin Gr1 victories in successive starts by defeating his older rivals in the $2 million Gr1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick in Sydney during April; overall he boasts 6 wins (also including the Gr1 George Ryder Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill in April & Gr2 Hobartville Stakes over 1400m in March) & 3 runner-ups (including the Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes over 1500m in March & Gr2 Royal Sovereign Stakes over 1200m in February) from 9 starts for $2,006,585 earnings. Kirwan said Surrealist would be the perfect addition to their stud farm at Jerry's Plains: "She's a magnificent mare & she fitted our criteria. She's in foal to a champion (Coolmore-based Fastnet Rock). At this stage she will be foaled down & be served by (fellow Coolmore stallion) Encosta de Lago." A future mating to Encosta de Lago would produce a full relation to Racing To Win. Surrealist is also the dam of 4YO Melbourne winner & stakes-placed mare Distilled (by Masterclass).
