UK Staying Star Mubtaker Euthanased

In the UK overnight, 12-time stakes-winner Mubtaker (who finished runner-up in France's 2003 Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe) was euthaniased "after a catastrophic breakdown on the gallops at Lambourn in Berkshire," reported racingpost.co.uk. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum's 9YO Mubtaker (Silver Hawk-Gazayil, by Irish River) "shattered his lower right hind leg". Kentucky-bred Mubtaker (who also won 3 consecutive editions of England's Gr2 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury in 2002, 2003 & 2004) was high-weighted older male (11-14 furlongs) in France & England for 2003. Overall Mubtaker won 13 of 31 career starts & earned over £700,000 (A$1.68m).
