NZ Gr1 Mare The Jewel To Visit Flying Spur

Tuesday, 8th August 2006

Meanwhile dual Gr1-winning NZ mare The Jewel (O'Reilly-The Grin, by Grosvenor) will be mated with Arrowfield stallion Flying Spur (Danehill-Rolls, by Mr Prospector) in her 1st season at stud this year. The Jewel (2003 NZ Champion 3YO) won both the Gr1 NZB 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton Park in 2002 & NZ Gr1 Whakanui Stud International Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa last year. Part-owner Ray Dennis confirmed: " Flying Spur is a proven sire & the mating matches up well pedigree wise." A ligament injury forced The Jewel's retirement earlier this year; overall she notched 11 wins (also including Australia's Gr3 Doomben Roses in Brisbane) from 30 starts for NZ$620,003 earnings. The Jewel also recorded Gr1 runner-ups in the Gr1 NZ 2000 Guineas at Riccarton, Gr1 NZ Oaks at Trentham & Gr1 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm (plus 4th in the Gr1 Queensland Derby) during the 2002-03 season.
