UK Trainer Ellison Heads To Melb Cup
British trainer Brian Ellison "will fly to Australia next month to fine-tune Carte Diamond's preparations for the $5.1 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 7," reported racingpost.co.uk. Connections were denied the chance to take part last year after the 5YO "suffered a frightful injury in the build-up" when he "impaled his hind-leg on a metal stake after crashing through a running rail in a workout at Flemington just 7 days before the race". Carte Diamond (by Theatrical) spent 3 months in rehabilitation at the Cranbourne veterinary clinic "under top specialist Barry Smith, but is now back galloping in the care of Australian handler Alex Macpherson at Denistoun Park on the Mornington Peninsula". Ellison plans to run Carte Diamond in a 2000m event at Caulfield in September "before returning to the same course for a crack at the Gr1 Caulfield Cup in October" (a race in which he finished 9th last year). Ellison commented: "He's done plenty of work, lots of galloping. Another one of my horses (Bay Story) is out there now working with Carte Diamond & hopefully that'll sharpen him up no end. It was a killer last year & it took us so long to get over it because he'd been working so well before the race. I couldn't stand it if anything like that happened again: he's lucky to be alive."
