Sky Conqueror Wins US Gr1 Woodford Reserve
William Sorokolit's home-bred 5YO Canadian champion grass horse Sky Conqueror (Sky Classic-Heavenly Ballerina, by Conquistador Cielo) "recovered from falling to his knees leaving the gate" to grab victory by a nose in the US$560,000 Gr1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (9 furlongs on turf) at Churchill Downs, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Ontario-bred entire Sky Conqueror (ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Darwin Banach) "made a sweeping last-to-first rally to edge runner-up Brilliant (War Chant-Fairest, by Known Fact) in the closing strides" with Danzon (Royal Academy-Zappeuse, by Kingmambo) in 3rd place & 4-time Gr1-winning 8YO ironhorse Better Talk Now (winner of the 2004 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf & runner-up in last year's US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf) 4th in his 2007 debut. Last season Sky Conqueror won Canada's Gr2 Northern Dancer Breeders' Cup Turf Stakes & Gr2 King Edward Breeders' Cup Stakes, before finishing the season with a 3rd-placing in October's Gr1 Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine. Most recently, he finished 5th last start in the US Gr2 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland on April 13 & overall now boasts 6 wins from 15 starts for US$1,231,586 earnings.
